Hello SJAA Members and Friends,
There are two, three, no, FOUR SJAA events this weekend: star party, beginners class, solar and FixIt. All happen at San Jose's Houge Park.
Starting at 8PM on Friday, 03 May 2013, the beginners class is kid and family friendly. Topics this month include tonight's solar system, constellations Ursa Major, Canes Venatici, Crater, Corvus, and a solar system object in more depth. It's a mixture of mythology and science, then kids go outside "hands-on" using telescopes.
The star party on Friday officially starts at 9PM, though folks usually show up a bit earlier to set up, hang out, chat and discuss the latest news. If you have a scope, by all means, bring it and share the views! Weather will be great regardless. Star party wraps up at midnight, we have to
lock the gate and bathrooms shortly thereafter.
On Sunday, 05 May (that's cinco de Mayo), starting at 2PM and lasting until 4PM, the solar observing program takes place at telescope row at Houge Park. The SJAA Lunt h-alpha scope will be out, and we've heard the sun is displaying fantastic activity right now. If you have a solar scope or projection system, this is a great time to bring it out and take it for a spin. Bring a hat and/or sunscreen, it gets warm and the site is very much exposed (as it should be!).
Coinciding with the solar program on Sunday will be the monthly FixIt program. This is a great chance to bring that astro gear you are having trouble with and get some independent, friendly, third party advice. If you need help even just using it, by all means, bring it to FixIt Day! It takes place in the hall at Houge Park.
Hope to see you out there!
