Six Hole Punch,

  1. I made a Google Group for us to manage these emails a bit more easily (e.g. create filters in gmail and what have you). Let me know if you didn't get the invite (or just feel free to join through this link):

    https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/sixholepunch

  2. Paris and I and maybe others are thinking of meeting up at Morningside Park (110th and Manhattan or Morningside) on Thursday evening to toss a disc around and maybe practice some things. Let's say 5:30 for now? Who's in? =)

  3. I mentioned I'm looking to try wearing some good gloves given the cold and rainy season that's apparently now upon us, and a few of you were also interested in learning more.

Football receiver gloves could work okay, but a couple of Rhino (Portland's club team) players started a company last month to manufacture and sell dedicated ultimate gloves:

    http://www.frictiongloves.com/index.html

I'll probably order these ($25); anyone else interested? Depending on interest, I could email them and see if they'd be down to give us a group discount. (For sure we'll save on shipping -- one $2 flat price for any number of gloves.)

Alright! Already can't wait for next Sunday. Have a great week,

Aseem

How did the team do this past weekend or should I wait for Steve's thorough recap?

I'd be down for a pair of gloves Aseem...

I'd be in for a Thursday evening practice at Morningside park.  I will say that it would be the first off-day practice I'd ever been to for a MUD league team, Rec or Comp.  Which is awesome.

In the rain, what changes most is flick forehands slipping out of people's hands before release.  We lefties have an advantage because we're being forced to our backhands usually, but another common solution that works for righties too is for handlers to try and break marks more frequently, e.g. fake the flick harder.

Thanks for organizing everything, Aseem.  Would love to hear how the games went, too. :)

Ha, I myself figured Steve could give a better recap than me, but I just realized he wasn't there! ;)

In a nutshell, we went 1-1, but both games were long and hard-fought. Our first opponent was mostly savage but still contested hard which I found really impressive. We were up 6-1 at one point, but they brought it back to 10-8 before we won 13-9.

Our second opponent played almost exclusively zone and really made us work the entire game for every point. This was the mirror of the first game: they took half at 7-1, but we brought it back to 9-7 before the soft cap went on, and we unfortunately lost 11-7.

Others can fill in the details, but I just remember both games being exhausting!

It was raining for the entire first game, and it was cold, and I think we played very well considering the conditions.  Rene's men were savage for the entire game, but we shouldn't minimize what we did.  It was a solid performance from 6 Hole Punch.

The second game was indeed our first loss, and I'm actually very happy with what happened.  First, some context:  Dave's team had one woman, and we had three (Ariella, Ashlan, Paris).  We decided we were up for a challenge, and rather than sending them a player, we'd let them play 6-1 the entire time while we were throwing 5-2.  Although we switched to 6-1 in the second half, the reason we were losing had little to do with the gender mismatch: They were almost exclusively running zone on defense, which at core is a test of the offense's patience, and we were consistently failing that test in the first half.  We'd get it half way / two thirds up the field, and then a popper would try to jam in an extra throw instead of resetting to the handler, or the handler would wait with the disc too long and instead of swinging float an iffy upside down throw that would get D'd.  These mistakes then led into mistakes on our transition O: when we managed to get the disc back after turning it over earlier, we'd rush trying to beat the zone, except it wasn't coordinated (so frequently the handler would rush to pick up the disc only to have to wait 4 seconds into the stall before anyone was even set up to begin a cut to get open).  We beat ourselves badly in that first half.

But in the second half, we finally got our heads.  We took our time on offense, and got a score.  This allowed us to throw zone on them, and we started forcing them into a lot of the same mistakes we had been making earlier in the game.  Howie, Adam, and Aseem were a fearsome cup, and their handlers ended up throwing a lot of things right into the cup, or turfed throws in the process of trying to punch it through.  And when we picked up the disc, we stopped chucking it away.  We stopped conducting the offense like there was a limit to how many passes we could complete before we had to score.

Unfortunately, we still had some drops in the end zone and were it not for those we might (might) have even won that game, but that happens and there's nothing you can do about it (especially on the first really cold day of the year).  The important point was we settled down and it paid off, which was a hurdle we haven't really cleared before.  This is going to be a recurring theme in the second half of the season as teams are more and more comfortable throwing zone on us.  Nothing will make your 4 or 5 point lead evaporate faster than throwing it away needlessly on offense.  We have a lot of speed and talent on this team, and it's very exciting, but it can also be our undoing.  I'm really proud of how everyone responded in that game, and I'm optimistic that we can continue that next week.

No one's sent out a summary of this past weekend, and it's gotten hazy in my mind, but FYI to those that couldn't make it:

We had a very tough first game, losing 13-3 (I thought 13-2 but apparently not), and we started the second game down 4-0 or 5-0 as well, but came back and rocked it unbelievably well, winning 13-8 (I thought 13-7 but apparently not).

Both teams played almost exclusively zone D against us, so we gained a ton of valuable experience playing zone O. We also got better on our own zone D, with more people gaining experience in the cup. Always fun. =D

====

To continue the tradition into its third week, Steve and I are interested in tossing tomorrow (Thursday) evening again. Last week Jonny and Ian joined us. Who wants to join us this week?

Let's say 5:30m at Morningside Park again for now. Steve or I will email out if it turns out some pickup is happening at Riverside, in which case we can join in there instead.

Hope to see some of you guys! Feel free to text me at 716-465-1028 if you're planning on coming (or running late or etc.).

Enjoy the last two days of the week,

Just curious, anyone down for tossing a disc around tonight or tomorrow night?

Btw, I could only make the first game this past weekend, so a quick recap for that one: we were down the entire game, always ~2-3 points behind, but almost all the points were long and hard-fought. We did a good job of hanging in there and ultimately came back to tie it up in hard cap and then win universe point!

Also a good reminder that a team's record doesn't always reflect what a game against them will be like. That game was against Fantasize This, the 0-12 team, but almost all three of our games against them have been close and hard-fought.

Anyone from the second game want to give a recap of that one?

In short, Owned by a tight Zone defense, Final score was 13-4? Good spirit though, after the cheer and a handshake we had a t-rex v. pterodactyl point.

Accurate basic recap. Thanks, Aseem and Jonny. Overall, I would just add that in both games, we played great, solid defense. Our issues came on O where we were hasty, forcing throws, and dropping catches. We pulled it together to come back in the first game, but the second game was over faster, and we didn't have time to get in our groove. We played some great zone D and O together, though, with everyone figuring out how to fill in the spaces, and had a great time being out in the beautiful fall air.

If you have time over the next few weeks, try to get out and throw a bit, especially while we still have the mild weather! Keep emailing out to the group if you are meeting in the park.

Reminder that Sunday there are no games, but there is pickup- Kyle, I forget what time you called it for. We'll return for our last 2 weeks of regular league play on Nov 4.

Have a great Thursday!

Now that the storm has passed, and after being holed up indoors for days, I'm itching to throw a disc around. Anyone else interested and able to, maybe around Morningside Park today or tomorrow?

Hey guys,

Not going to be able to make it uptown. I'm staying with friends at the moment. Won't be getting power till Saturday night. So probably be out for this weekend as well if there are any games to be played at all.

Hope everyone is safe.

Received an email from MUD Commissioner Rosefigura an hour ago. Apparently, it's not looking good. The manager of Inwood Park is saying right now that the park will be closed. Moreover, if we dared to defy this closure and played anyway, we'd lose the permit (i.e. no more MUD). So check back with us again this weekend, but it's not encouraging to say the least.

Assuming our games are canceled tomorrow, anyone down for pickup instead (or at least throwing) at Morningside or Riverside? I could do anytime tomorrow, but morning or afternoon is preferable.

James, sorry to hear about your shoulder/knee -- get better and great playing! And good luck Wee Yong, hope you got your power back just now. =)

P.S. I'm going to be out of town next Sunday -- coincidentally playing in an ultimate tournament in Hawaii! -- so have fun and hopefully see you all in two weeks if I don't see you tomorrow.

1pm sounds great to me! And apparently the regular pickup meetup group also shifts to 1pm at Morningside in the fall (see comments):

Let's plan for that! I'll send an email to the group too.

Hey everyone,

Games are on this weekend! 12:45 pm and 2:30 pm.  I'm unfortunately not going to be here this weekend, but the weather looks like it's going to be really nice.

However, the games are not happening at the normal Inwood fields. The new fields are a few blocks south.

Fred sent along these directions:

1) Take the A or the 1 to Dyckman St.

2) Walk WEST on Dyckman all the way to the river (go through the WSH overpasses).

3) Enter the park on the right (heading NORTH)

4) Follow the path; there are baseball fields, then tennis courts, then soccer fields.

This map shows the fields:

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=W+207th+St,+New+York,+NY&hl=en&ll=40.872118,-73.929341&spn=0.009508,0.015793&sll=37.6,-95.665&sspn=40.438768,64.6875&oq=w+207th+St&hnear=W+207th+St,+New+York&t=h&z=16

This is the last weekend before playoffs! Everyone has had an unexpectedly long break from playing, so try to get out there this weekend and shake the rust off.  Probably aren't too many 60 degree days left in the next few months.

Hey- not that it is too big deal but the tennis courts are actually a roller hockey rink and look nothing like tennis courts. Once you see the rink you are pretty much there but it may make sense to let everyone know that they will not see tennis courts.

Hey all, sorry I won't be able to make it out tomorrow- I've had an all-day seminar on the calendar for a few months now. Been trying to get out of it because I'm itching to get out on the field, but no such luck. Good luck tomorrow, and have a great time. (Also, be careful, apparently the Dyckman fields have a lot of hazards.)

So we got stuck to the mini field for both of our games. The first game we got to 12-12 under the time cap but the commissioner claimed the game was still to 13. We lost that point and lost 13-12. I call bs but I also dont care to much as we will get them in the playoffs.

The second game we played indoor style and we played 3 periods similar to a hockey game. We lost the first period, and then won the second and the third. The final score would have been like 20-15 but we reset the score for the third period because we were feeling nice and wanted an extra challenge. We won the third period on universe point.

I am in for Sunday

Word from the Commish is that the games will be happening at Inwood Park on our usual fields.  We've had a weird layoff in these last few weeks from normal games, so things might be a little rusty when we show up on Sunday.  I believe we earned a bye by finishing in the top two, but I'll let you know when I have more information.  Think about trying to show up a little earlier than you normally would (unlike in previous weeks, I don't think we're guaranteed more than one game, so give us the best chance to win and make the most of it by making sure you're ready come game time).

I'd *love* if we could do a team drill again (e.g. the endzone drill, or whatever else) before our first game. That was so helpful last time not just in warming up but also getting us in the right strategy mindset.

Can't wait for Sunday!

Agree with Aseem, let's do endzone drill beforehand since you almost never throw to a standing player in a game.

Let's get (I.e win) in at least two games to make it worth while for all those coming far from inwood!

Ok, the schedule has been announced.  Everyone will get to play two games, guaranteed, so there's that.  Also, the weather looks pretty good for the second half of November.

The first round starts at 10 am, but we earned a first round bye! Hooray.

The second round starts at 11:30 am, where we will play Fantasize This! The last time we played them, the game went to universe point and we managed to pull out a win.  I really don't care what their record was this season, but they can beat us, so show up early to get ready.  They will be warm from their first game.

Third round is scheduled to start at 1 pm against BTE, a team that has really given us fits with their zone D.  Pasting the full schedule below.  Note that in previous years, the 3rd place game, although technically on the schedule, hasn't been played, so we really need to work to earn that 3rd game.

Hi team,

I should be there to help you guys warm up and throw but I won't be able to play any of the games. My knee just hasn't recovered despite the rest.

See you all tomorrow!

Hey 6 Hole Punchers!
It's been a while and it's cold outside, but! is anyone up for some
disc craft tonight? I want to do some running around and throwing, or
even go to pick up somewhere if you know of some!

I might be down! Depends on when and where. What're you thinking, Morningside Park around 7 or 8 maybe? There's a chance I may not make it, but I would love the fresh air too.

Hey guys, I'll be playing competitive (not captaining) instead of rec this season since I can't make any Saturday games. I miss y'all and would love to baggage with any one of you interested in playing comp as well. Let me know!

Separate note: not sure if people ended up getting together to play a couple of Thursdays ago, but I'd love to join if anyone wants to do it again. This week?
