Exhibitions on View

Gordon Matta-Clark: Anarchitect
On view through April 8, 2018
Best known for his monumental cuts, holes, apertures, and excisions to the facades of derelict homes and historic buildings in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, and abroad, Gordon Matta-Clark’s work conveys a potent critique of architecture's role vis-à-vis the capitalist system. Taking as a point of departure the pivotal series of “cuts” produced in the Bronx in the early 1970s that led to his further exploration of the city as a field of action, Gordon Matta-Clark: Anarchitect will examine the artist’s pioneering social, relational, and activist approach. Read more >

Susannah Ray: A Further Shore
On view through April 8, 2018
Inspired by the boundless humanism in Walt Whitman’s poem “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry,” Susannah Ray has developed a new series of photographs on the waterways of New York City. In his poem, Whitman calls out to the tides, the gulls, the ferry passengers, the light, the clouds, the ships, the sailors, the waves, the cities on the far shore. In his eyes, all humans are divine, their reflected faces anointed by “fine spokes of light” in the passing waters. At the Bronx Museum, Ray will present a selection of images captured specifically in the Bronx. Read more >

Angel Otero: Elegies
On view through April 29, 2018
Since early on in his career Angel Otero has aligned his practice to the oldest and most revered painting tradition, which he endeavors to constantly reinvent it. Using a disciplined, thoroughgoing, empirical studio process, Otero has established a compositional method that brings together and pulls apart disparate artistic influences to develop his own unique visual language. Read more >

Hi Phil

Would it be ok to post this to the Six on History Google groups that you’ve set up re: Summer 2018 NEH Teacher Institute led by the Brooklyn Historical Society and Museum of the City of New York. They’re currently looking for applicants and Emily at Brooklyn Historical Society writes “we are especially looking for middle and high school teachers of History, Social Studies, and Humanities.”

Freedom for One, Freedom for All?

Abolition and Women Suffrage, 1830s - 1920s

Photos: Solomon Studios

How are educationhousingpolicing, and economic opportunity critical to our understanding of freedom and citizenship?

How did struggles for civil and political rights for women and African Americans compete and cooperate in the antebellum period?

How expansive was the vision of white middle-class suffragists and how did their vision differ from those of other classes and races?

What issues besides suffrage did woman's rights activists seek in the early 20th century and why?

How did race and class affect women's approach and response to suffrage?

Join 30 educators from around the nation in July, 2018 at Brooklyn Historical Society and Museum of the City of New York as we bring an intersectional analysis to these two movements for social justice. Click below to find out how.

The summer institute is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor.
