Not a big fan of this/these contests.  There are approx. 8,000 teachers of Social Studies in NYC DOE and how many more tens of thousands nationwide, and how can you possibly say this one is the "winner"?  The rest of us not so much?  No such contest for doctors or lawyers. 

Save the $62k and use it to pay teachers better salaries.  Patronizing. Like having rich people and corporations pay for the clean-up of sections of our highways.  Close the tax loopholes and there will be ample funds to pay for highway trash pick-up -- and to fully fund schools, create good jobs, pay for college tuition to public universities, provide universal healthcare and yes, to fairly compensate all teachers.

Take a look at the 52 state "winners" below.  Is it just me, or is there just one African American and one maybe two Latinas -- total of six percent?  ouch!
