I've been redirected(from there) to ask here about one issue I have. Microsoft Edge Webview2 Runtime keeps getting installed on my PC. I can't uninstall it as next day it somehow installs itself back. Can someone please tell me what is going on? I don't use either MS Edge or MS Office so I want a clear answer on what it is and how to stop it.
Thanks in advance
I don't develop websites or apps. I do not need the Webview and I even don't use any Office products. 3 jobs running in background for Microsoft Edge Webview2 and no way of stopping them from restarting if I kill them in the background.
This is so wrong and I'm tired of companies like Microsoft, Apple, etc. forcing us to run background jobs we don't need or use that simply take up memory for the very slim chance it might be used and to make it start quicker.
I don't know if this will help but I managed to keep webview2 off my OS by not being connected to the internet at startup (from a restart) I'm not sure if this works with shut down/ power on. I just unplug my LAN whenever I need to restart and don't have wifi on autoconnect. I also don't have edge and chrome on my OS
Dude I don't use ANYTHING that depends on the edge webview, it doesn't even hit or anything if I need something I install it. I just want to remove this from my pc, as well as useless for me, it slows everything down.
I got Webview2 unexpectedly when I installed ipevo software for a document camera a few days ago. Webview2 attempts to accesses my camera whenever I turn on the computer. Norton 365 identified that as a security risk and has successfully blocked Webview2's access to my camera. I get a message about the blockage each time when I turn on the computer, but that's a small price to pay to get rid of the camera security risk issue. I just hope that Webview2 is not being used as a vacuum cleaner to suck up other information about users.
I started my laptop a few days ago only to find most of my Edge favourites had gone.
Soon after that Edge closed down and will now only start for 2 or 3 seconds before closing itself so no chance to clean the cache or disable extensions.
Yes definitely DISM should be run before attempting to reinstall Edge using their method. I would try uninstalling Edge by using the method in this link ( -remove-microsoft-edge-windows-10). Then reinstalling it through the Windows store. (I just copy and pasted my previous reply)

I have decided to play safe and not do any big jobs on my laptop with my lack of technical knowledge as I go away abroad for 5 or 6 weeks soon and a working laptop for this trip is 100% necessary and both Chrome and Firefox are working fine so I can use them for the duration and come back to this in Mid-January.
In Windows 10, Microsoft introduced a new browser called Microsoft Edge. It was created to replace Internet Explorer. Edge is positioned as a modern browser with support of all mainstream web standards. Microsoft implemented a new rendering engine for the browser, which stripped out a lot of legacy code. However, for many users, Microsoft Edge is not at all impressive. Its user interface is less configurable at all compared to Internet Explorer's rich options. Many users want to remove Microsoft Edge from Windows 10. Today, I would like to share how it can be done.
Microsoft Edge is now a Chromium-based browser with a number of exclusive features like Read Aloud and services tied to Microsoft instead of Google. The browser has already received a few updates, with support for ARM64 devices. Also, Microsoft Edge is still supporting a number of aging Windows versions, including Windows 7. Finally, interested users can download MSI installers for deployment and customization.
Like any built-in Windows apps, Microsoft Edge has no option to get rid of it. To uninstall and remove the Edge browser in Windows 10, we need to refer to a third party tool. Follow the intructions below.
Behind this trick is an application called WIMTweak which manages Windows Packages and allows you to hide/unhide them from the Windows image (WIM) file. It works on offline images as well as online. WIMTweak was created by MSFN user Legolash2o, so credits for this awesome tool go to him.
I have a Connect icon on my All Apps list and when you right click it has an option to Uninstall the app, but after displaying an hourglass for a moment nothing happens. Is there a way to remove this?
While I dislike Edge as much as the next guy, it would be just like M$ to decommission IE in favor of edge. We run some apps that are browser specific to IE (I know, it hurts to admit, not my decision), and it would be nice to know how to re-install edge without having to reinstall Windows. Anyone play around more with this tool and figure something out?
time to do in-place upgrades to repair my Win10 installs where I had used the third party tool to remove Edge and restore the old Edge, just to resolve the problem of cumulative updates not installing because of uninstalling Edge this way.
Running Uninstall_Edge.bat under Windows 10 10.0.20190.1000 (the latest Windows Insider download), still works (to uninstall Edge) but leaves Microsoft Edge listed on the programs list seen from Windows Start.
Can this be fixed in a future release please?

It is April 2024. The deadline for compliance with the Digital Markets Act was in March 2024. Still, even with all the latest updates installed, I cannot uninstall Microsoft Edge from any of my devices.
According to Microsoft, customers from the European Economic Area should be able to do so. Whenever I check Microsoft Edge in the Settings app on Windows 10 or Windows 11 devices, I get a grayed out uninstall button. I double-checked to make sure that the latest Windows updates are installed.
How can this be? Last time I checked, Germany is a member state of the European Union. Microsoft even confirms that it planned to roll out the changes to all customers in the European Economic Area by early April".
It wrote: "Throughout March we will increase the number of PCs in the rollout, while closely monitoring for any quality issues. Our plan is to deliver and enable our DMA changes for all PCs in the EEA by early April. After the update is applied, a restart is required to fully enable the changes."
Microsoft has not updated the post on its website. The most likely explanation is that the rollout is still not complete and that it is controlled on the server side. Since there is no official update, it is unclear if that is the case. It could also be a bug affecting some systems.
Most Windows users in the EU and EEC will probably remain unaware of the option that Edge can be uninstalled (eventually). The uninstallation can lead to a cul-de-sac situation. If Edge is the only browser, there is no apparent option to install another browser. With Edge gone, there is seemingly no option to install a different browser.
Windows users who run into the issue may want to fire up the command prompt and use winget to install a different browser. The command winget install Mozilla Firefox installs Mozilla's Firefox web browser on the device. You can also use it to install other browsers, e.g., chrome.
According to Tweakers.net which is a Dutch language site installing 23h2 is necessary to facilitate removing Microsoft Edge from Windows 11. -deelt-testversie-windows-11-die-aan-eu-eisen-dma-voldoet.html
Imho there is no need to remove Edge at all, because it works pretty nice for mostly all purposes for common users. I just prefer to remove Chrome than Edge if you make to choose. Indeed Chrome has been giving me some troubles since February, mostly all of them when using the national IDcard for official government sites. By the way, Firefox is not usable with IDcards out of the box, too much added configuration needed and PKCS modules and so forth. Not worthly the pain.
Thanks for the article! :]
Users dont want or need these browser worms, stealer logs, keyloggers, malware and spyware in any browser, let alone the edge. Extremely high privacy & security risk and why I removed the edge browser and use mozilla firefox and an ungoogled chrome browser. I do not recommend storing your passwords in any browser including reputable extensions such as bitwarden & proton pass.
I remove Edge frequently. I use a third party uninstaller and it works well. The problem is that every bloody update from Microshite re-installs Edge, along with any other invasive, cycle and data stealing power draining garbage they are trying to inflict on their users.
If one is super desperate, though, and really willing, able and ready to remove MS Edge, options to do so are posted ubiquitously on the Internet. The following site offers several options for doing so:
. . . like a bunch of monkeys chattering around a black stone, a Monolith. Except in this situation we have a bunch of techno wizards passively chattering about the future of Windows and, in some distorted way, the future of technology via a MS monopoly.
I can uninstall it, Windows 10, living in the EU. Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is needed for some apps esp. from MS store. But I did not uninstall it. One reason is Youtube on Edge uses way less resources as on Firefox, esp. Processor resources. The privacy is a problem.
Dear Martin, I installed Windows 11 a few months ago on an old laptop the Rufus way, just to see what all the fuss was about, just to see how bad Win 11 really is. I still have my old Win 10 laptop, I already knew how bad Win 10 is. On both of them O&O AppBuster can not uninstall Edge, Revo uninstaller can not uninstall Edge, its not even there, I see no Edge in Revo?
