In times of olde, God gave mankind the ten commandments, and a message that has been lost to the centuries. In the present, Koichiro Kamishiro is a modern day Indiana Jones who scours (and often destroys) ruins for hints of the past, until one day he runs across a box filled with two crystal triangles. Having inadvertently run across the key to God's lost message, Kamishiro suddenly has a lot to deal with including assassination attempts by the KGB and the CIA, aliens hell-bent on destroying the Earth and the love of several women!

Taking off from work and popping on this rollicking adventure anime this morning was one of the best decisions I've made in a while. Talk about a hidden gem! Everything from the atmosphere, to the excellent script, score and story are a treat to experience and had me hooked.

I have a soft spot for this sort of straight to video 80's anime. Something had to fill the space on the Video Hut shelves between Akira and Wicked City and Japan didn't disappoint. These things existed in some kind of animated pocket universe of exploitation movies.

Crystal Triangle follows the worlds worst archaeologist as he blows up multiple historic sites trying to find something called The Message of God. The Message is the only thing that can prevent mass extinction when the dark star Nemesis comes back around in '99. Along the way there's a clan of demon monks, a bazooka toting KGB agent who frequently gives shout outs to his grandfather Rasputin, and plenty of awkward Bond style flirting.

This should've been a lot of fun, I mean this has just about everything action, adventure, mystical killer monks, Rasputin, alien/demon things, a Yakuza samurai, and an Indiana Jones rip off main character. So what went wrong? Why is this so boring and forgettable? I'm not sure but I've watched this a couple times now and I still can't tell you exactly what happens or why and worse off I really just care enough about the movie to even try.

This is what you'd get if you crossed Indiana Jones with the DaVinci Code and made that as a late-80's anime. Here we have an archaeologist hunting for the secrets of a lost ancient civilization who supposedly left a record of the last message of God. Whoever has the message will control the future, so various factions scheme to acquire it for themselves, while our hero archaeologist searches for the noble motive of pure academia. If that sounds cheesy, it should.

I'm not saying this is terrible. I enjoyed it for what it is. Sure, the animation isn't that great, and there are plot holes big enough to drive a truck through, but it was fun enough for a watch. It's not worth searching for, but if you come across a copy and don't go into it expecting much, it's not the worst late-80's anime you could watch.

What a wild, wonderfully colorful and bizarrely well animated time. This is the strangest Indiana Jones inspired offspring I've encountered so far. You never know what is going to happen next but it is always a rollicking good time.
