DreamscapeImmersive, the story-oriented virtual-reality company whose backers include movie chain AMC Entertainment Holdings and Oscar winners Steven Spielberg and Hans Zimmer, is opening its first permanent location today, in the same upscale Los Angeles mall where it ran a pop-up storefront last February featuring its sci-fi-themed Alien Zoo experience.

The permanent storefront in the Westfield Century City mall is several times larger than that temporary space, and will initially provide dedicated "theaters" and suit-up areas for three different experiences: Alien Zoo, the undersea adventure theBlu: Deep Rescue, and the Indiana Jones-style Lavan's Magic Projector: The Lost Pearl. The venue also includes a theater-style lobby for check-in and ticket purchase and a themed lounge area with bar that sells books, branded merchandise and concessions alongside large photos of early VR headsets and display cases filled with faux artifacts from the Magic Projector and Alien Zoo fictional universes.

Unlike many of the current location-based entertainment venues using VR experiences, Dreamscape offers more narrative-driven experiences than the arcade-style shoot-'em-ups and music competitions common in the nascent space.

That's not surprising, given the company's Hollywood roots. Vaughn spent 25 years with Disney, leaving as its top Imagineer after developing cutting-edge theme-park rides and experiences the company uses around the world. Co-founders include long-time Hollywood producer and DreamWorks studio chief Walter Parkes, a three-time Oscar nominee for films such as WarGames and Awakenings, and PTK Capital's Kevin Wall, a prominent Los Angeles tech and music executive whose credits include the 2007 Live Earth concert. It also counts among early investors Westfield Malls, three film studios and large-format film exhibitor IMAX.

Parkes and Vaughn developed the story lines in Alien Zoo and Magic Projector. The company collaborated with WEVR, a well-established VR company based in Venice, Calif. with backing from HTC, to adapt resources from an existing WEVR consumer title into a new story in theBlu. Each experience lasts between nine and 12 minutes, with a few minutes on each end to put on and take off the headset, haptic backpack, and hand and foot tracking devices that allow for a fully immersive experience as you move through an otherworldly zoo, ancient tomb or undersea frontier.

The Los Angeles venue is the first of several from Dreamscape coming to similarly upscale malls in Paramus, N.J., Columbus, Ohio, Roosevelt Field, N.Y., and Dallas, Texas, Vaughn said. Some will be standalone locations like the Century City facility. Others will be located in separate, branded areas of existing AMC theater operations, much like the store-within-a-store concepts used by Starbucks and many upscale fashion lines.

Tickets cost $20, a price point the company experimented with during the Alien Zoo popup earlier in the year, Vaughn said. And while the company could tweak off-peak/peak pricing in the future, for now that'll be a flat rate for a roughly 20-minute experience of which up to six people can partake at a time. By locating in upscale malls with plenty of other things to do, the Dreamscape experience is designed to be part of a broader night out for a family or group of friends, Vaughn said.

Additional outlets are planned, including overseas, though Vaughn said he couldn't yet release those locations. One likely area of expansion is China, where the number of VR-focused entertainment venues is skyrocketing. China is also home base for Wanda Dalian, AMC's majority shareholder and owner of China's largest movie chain.
