Adding metadata using protobuf (nanopb) to the device registration

We are using SW v1.12.0 and use GPB (nanopb) over MQTT on our motes to communicate with the host. All is working fine, we can send all events (measurements, locations and alerts). We also receive from the host a range of device commands to control the device configuration.

We are trying to add the firmware version and some additional information to the device registration but cannot find an example anywhere on how to add the metadata. Our platform is ESP32 (esp-idf) using C. We have looked at the arduino example on GitHub but no luck so far.

Can anybody please provide some pointers or an example of the callback to be used with nanopb to add the metadata field(s)
