Optimal sized images for Header ect.

Question:   
I want to use photoshop to manipulate/create images. Are there guidelines to follow when choosing image attributes for each area capable of hosting an image? I think there are more that four places you can replace/add images to.

I would be wary of limits.

You could of course host images elsewhere (dropbox, for example) if you need more space.
