Earnings trigger a trial work period
During a trial work period, a beneficiary receiving Social Security disability benefits on the basis of his or her own earnings history may test his or her ability to work and still be considered disabled. We do not consider services performed during the trial work period as showing that the disability has ended until services have been performed in at least 9 months (not necessarily consecutive) in a rolling 60-month period. In 2023, any month in which earnings exceed $1,050 is considered a month of services for an individual's trial work period. In 2024, this monthly amount increases to $1,110. The trial work period does not apply to SSI benefits.

Method used to determine earnings that trigger a trial work period
Monthly earnings in 2024, used to determine whether a month is part of a trial work period, is such amount for 2001 multiplied by the ratio of the national average wage index for 2022 to that for 1999, or, if larger, such amount for 2023 ($1,050). If the amount so calculated is not a multiple of $10, we round it to the nearest multiple of $10. Below are details on how we determined the latest amount. Calculation details Amounts in
formula 2001 monthly earnings$530 1999 average wage index30,469.84 2022 average wage index63,795.13 Computation$530 times 63,795.13 divided by 30,469.84 equals $1,109.67, which rounds to $1,110 Higher amount$1,110 exceeds the amount for 2023, so the amount for 2024 is $1,110

Social Security uses the amount you have earned in a month before subtracting taxes, to decide if a month counts toward your TWP. In 2023, if you earn $1,050 or more, or work more than 80 hours in self-employment in a month you're considered to have worked a TWP "service month," which is counted toward your TWP.

Unlike with SGA, Social Security cannot use other Work Incentives to determine if your work activity meets or exceeds this established amount. So, in 2023, if your pre-tax income is $1,050 or more, you're using a month of your TWP.

After you complete your TWP, you will begin your 36-month Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE). This Work Incentive is a safeguard during which time Social Security will evaluate your work and earnings based on SGA levels to determine your eligibility for benefits. In 2023, SGA is $1,470 for individuals who are not blind. If you are blind, SGA in 2023 is $2,460.

During your EPE, you will receive benefits for all months during which your work and earnings fall below SGA level and you continue to have a disabling impairment. SSA will consider whether other Work Incentives can be applied to your situation; for example, whether the cost of certain impairment-related expenses and services that you need to work can be deducted from your gross earnings when deciding if your work is SGA.

The first time you work above SGA in the EPE, Social Security will decide that you no longer meet the requirements for disability due to work. At that point, your disability will be considered "ceased". Social Security will pay benefits for the month your disability ceased and the following two months. This is the grace period. If your earnings fall below SGA and you are still in the 36-month re-entitlement period, Social Security can restart your benefits without a new application.
