Peace peace SBU folks-

The past few months of organizing have led us up to this point. Our moment is finally here. Revolution is happening all over the world (more on that in this week's link). Its our duty to bring the struggle to New York City. Without further ado, this week in SBU..,

Monday, Jan 31st
Roosevelt Campus meeting, at SBU from 12-1 pm. (Angie, Alex, Brittany, Cynthia, Dahiana, Jainee, Jomar, Ramsey, Taffy, Wahid and Angie's friend that came thru on Friday)
"Fix Our Schools, Don't Just Close Them" Action. Facebook event is here. Meet at SBU at 1 pm. We have to review the action plan, identify our marshalls, our potential arrestees, media spokespeople, prepare posters/props/chants/songs... (Everyone + Friends + Family)

Tuesday, Feb 1st
Court support for CD arrestees, at NYPD spot to be determined. This will be downtown and early in the morning. Anyone that is free (i'm looking at you college students and staff) should be there to support. Will have more info after Monday's action.
PEP Vote at Brooklyn Tech #1. Bus will leave from SBU at 4 pm. (Everyone)

Thursday, Feb 3rd
PEP Vote at Brooklyn Tech #2. The votes for Columbus & Kennedy are on this day. Bus will leave from SBU at 4 pm. (Everyone)

Friday, Feb 4th
SBU General Body Meeting. We need a facilitator, let me know if you're interested and we can prep on Wednesday. Some agenda items: evaluate the week's actions, discuss the people's revolutions in the Arab world, plan for Gompers support coming up.

* Folks that have signed up to facilitate workshops at the SBU retreat - touch base with your co-facilitators and create an agenda by next week
* As usual, i'll post timeslots for 1-on-1 and coaching sessions when i get into the office tomorrow. Miguel (you stood me up jerk), Jorky, John, Elliot, Wolfman - sign up for some quality time with me.
* This email needs to be fwded to: most of g-house, some folks in roosevelt, kennedy, cssj, others. please double check to see if i left someone out.

This week's links:

In education:
Obama's version of education reform in this year's "State of the Union" address (Colorlines)
Rosa Parks of education? Ohio mother arrested for sending her children to a suburban school (NPR & Colorlines)
Cathie Black clearly has no idea what's going on in NYC schools. Defends closing schools (Gotham Schools x2)
Sharp rise in suspensions in NYC schools, #'s have double in the past decade. (NY Times)
Schools proposed to be closed have most challenging race/class demographics (NY Times blog)

In immigration:
Anti-immigrant attack continues in Arizona. AZ has introduced legislation to revoke birthright citizenship. (Colorlines)

In our people's history:
This past week marked Angela Davis' 67th birthday. Celebrate our sheroe's 4 decades of hard work. (Colorlines)

Around the world:
I hope you're paying attention to what's happening in the Arab world right now. what started in Tunisia as a protest movement against rising food prices and unemployment has led to a mass movement to overthrow the government in Tunisia, Yemen, Algeria and Egypt. This is like nothing we've seen since 1989 and the fall of the Communist bloc in Eastern Europe. i'm incredibly inspired by the power of the people and the struggle against government corruption.

Tunisia: How We Got Here and the Task Ahead (Dissident Voice)
Understanding the Egyptian Uprising (I Am Not a Rapper, I Spit blog)
Uprising in Egypt: Biggest political challenge the regime has yet to see (Democracy Now!)
Algeria: 10,000 people march (AFP via Google)
How did we come to this? How rising food prices can topple governments (NPR)
Live stream of the movement to oust Mubarak in Egypt (Al Jazeera English)
I'm attaching the best sign i saw yesterday at the rally in solidarity with the Egyptian people at the UN.

Unrelated to global revolution: Gay rights activist beaten to death in Uganda. All love and power to David Kato. (BBC)

Quotes to inspire:

"The schools we go to are reflections of the society that created them. Nobody is going to give you the education you need to overthrow them. Nobody is going to teach you your true history, teach you your true heroes, if they know that that knowledge will help set you free. Schools in amerika are interested in brianwashing people with amerikanism, giving them a little bit of education, and training them in skills needed to fill the positions the capitalist system requires. As long as we expect amerika's schools to educate us, we will remain ignorant." - Assata Shakur

"Education becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world." - Paolo Freire

"If you have come here to help me you are wasting your time, but if you have come here because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together." - Lilla Watson, Aboriginal educator

"Fuck shit up!" - Shaun, your loving organizer

Peace SBU-

Remind me never to volunteer as police negotiator again (i spent the day talking to pigs rather than losing my voice with the youth). But i felt each and every one of you that came through today. We punched DoE in the mouth today. but they're still in the fight...

So make sure you come through both tomorrow (2/1) and Thursday (2/3) to the PEP votes. The bus will be leaving from SBU at 4 pm.

See your ass-kicking selves tomorrow!

Peace folks-

Adolfo's right. We have no plan for the votes.

If folks want to do something, we should plan for thursday's vote. And we should talk about it as a unit, face-to-face (and not over email). Escalating tactics is something we talk about alot in campaign planning. But we also have to be smart. CD is a card we've already played. And it may be a powerful tool, but i think we also have to come up with other ways to elevate our issue and make sure we're being heard.

that and no one that got arrested today can even think about getting arrested again for at least 6 months. even if it was a motel 6 arrest..

let's talk tomorrow.

What's our strategy for tomorrow? I don't want us to go to these hearings and let them run their agenda. They have made their decision like we already know, meaning that the testimonies will be meaningless (even though people have good things to say).
