Let's try to get to know one another a little bit since we don't have
any current reading assignments. I'm Danielle and I live in
Colorado. My husband is in the Army and we have two girls. Currently
I'm reading some of the collected works of Zora Neale Hurston. Some
of my favorite authors are Anne Rice and Robin Cook. I've only read a
handful of books by African American authors, (Omar Tyree, Lalita
Tademy and E. Lynn Harris) so I am really excited about being a part
of this group to explore more writers. There is no SCBC book club in
my area but I am hoping that they get a group started soon. I can
imagine that this can be a lot of fun with others who share my reading
interest.

Hi my name is Shalonda Foster and I live in Missouri City, Texas and I also like a couple of the authors that you menioned such as Omar Tyree and Lalita Tademy.  I read Cane River and my favorite by Omar Tyree is Fly Girl.  I also liked a book that I read by Walter Mosley called Black Betty.  Have you read of any of his books?  I think I could probably get into Anne Rice books too but I have not tried to read any of them.   What was your favorite?

Hi my name is Janel Seals and I recently moved to Fort Worth TX from Temple TX.  I really enjoy reading novels from African Americans because I was not exposed to many when I was younger and in high school.  I also try to make sure my two kids are exposed to as many African American authors as possible.  I enjoy reading Pearl Cleage, Valerie Wilson Wesley, Eric Jerome Dickey, E. Lynn Harris and Walter Mosley.  I have read just about everything by Mosley and Dickey.  I am looking to read other authors that I may not have thought twice about reading before.  I would really like to start reading some of Hurston's work or others from the Harlem Renaissance. Could someone please explain how the book club works?

I've probably been reading Anne Rice since I was 15 and saw Interview
with a Vampire. My favorite was Merrick and Memnoch the Devil.
Merrick was interesting because it was her only African American
character, a female witch/vampire. Memnonch is a good read and
explores the lead character Lestat's relationship between heaven and
hell, GOD and the devil. However, she's discontinued this style of
writing to tell the story of Jesus's life. Her first wa Out of Egypt
which explored Jesus's life as a child according to some of the legend
surround his birth and childhood from the Gospel of Thomas. Her last
one I released in March Road to Cana explores Jesus as he comes into
the knowledge of who he is and performs his first miracles. There is
suppose to be a movie in the works for the first one being filmed in
October in Israel I believe this year. I loved Cane River and also
read her follow up Red River. Both great reads. I've been interested
in reading Walter Mosely but haven't gotten through one of his books
yet. I picked up Little Yellow Dog I think it was.

What can you recommend by Pearl Cleage? If you want to try Hurston
start with Jonah's Gourd Vine, once you get use to reading in the
southern dialect that she uses it's a great book. I'm reading Moses
Man on the Mountain right now and it's good, another version of the
story of Moses. I'm guessing the moderator will list a book title
eventually, we'll get 3 months to read it and then post discussions of
it on the message board.

The first book I read was "What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day."  It was actually the book of the month for Oprah's book club.  Also I enjoyed "Some Things I Never Thought I'd Do" and "I Wish I Had a Red Dress."  I really enjoyed "Babylon Sisters" also.  Hope this helps.  Thanks for your input.

Hi Everybody!!

My name is Miriam Grays and I live in Indianapolis, IN.  I am so excited for this online group because I LOVE to read and my passion is reading literature by African American authors.  My favorite authors are Eric Jerome Dickey and Kimberla Lawson Roby; however, I am open to reading any thing that can hold my attention.  In college I was not a  Literature major but the majority of my elective classes focused around literature and /or writing.  I am currently engaged to a wonderful Army man who is serving in Iraq, so I have tons of time to read and reflect.  I look forward to getting know all of you!!!

Greeting Everyone,

My name is Priscilla and I live in Brooklyn, NY. I'm the CEO/Founder of Sistahs In Unity and The Black Social Network. In my spare time I definitely enjoy reading. I'm currently reading Oprah Book Club selection "A New Earth" By Eckhart Tolle. A few of my favorite books would be Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah, A Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, Dutch by Terry Woods. I'm also interested in starting a book club in the NYC area, if possible. I think Sistah Circle book club can be a great resource to influence reading and empowering our community online and offline.  I look forward to getting to know everyone soon.

Stay Blessed,
Priscilla E.
