Hey everyone =]

For the Monthly Meet tonight,  unless someone would like to give a talk, the focus will be on discussions around the two project ideas that have been put forward as well as an invitation to put forward project suggestions. That is, it will be an open discussion around

1) Surveying research on ML & Healthcare in Africa

2) Helping make African Health Datasets more accessible

It would really be great to get input and ideas from the community, especially if anyone has any experience or would like to be more involved!! All are welcome

Additionally getting input from a healthcare perspective as well as an ML perspective is super important - we want to hear your thoughts!

Here is the Zoom link for the Monthly Meet (it is the same every month ;] ) [http://bit.ly/SisonkeBiotik-Meet]

We start at 18.00 GMT/UTC +2h

Otherwise this is the is the line up for the coming months Monthly Meet Talks... Thanks to all of those who have offered to give talks!! 🌍❤️

Additionally - for the last Thursday in September we would like to do a panel discussion on:

Healthcare to ML - should I do my healthcare internship?

This is a question that I get fairly often and I believe is a really hard decision with no one right answer that a lot of individuals who want to enter the ML and data science space from Healthcare have to make

For context, as an example in my own case, when a medical student finishes their medical degree, they have to do a medical internship to qualify for registration with their national professional body - in my home country this is the Health Practitioners Council of South Africa - they require individuals who have just gotten their medical degree to do an additional 3 years of work / training in pre-specified government hospitals before their full registration is realised, allowing them to practice independently of government / state facilities.

So the question becomes, something like - are these 3 additional years going to make sense for what I want to do in health data science ? Different countries have different specific requirements - but I believe the question generally remains pertinent.

I know some individuals who have gone either way when making this decision and some who are currently making this decision. I am going to reach out to invite them to be participants but if you feel like this is relevant to you or someone that you know that would make a good candidate to participate on this panel discussion please direct message me   we are looking for ~4/5 panel participants and a moderator - it would be great to try get all participants confirmed before the end of August 🙃
