Oggetto: post-doc position, Modelling Ecosystem-Atmosphere-Interactions, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany

Dear all, we have a position open at developing a high-resolution coupled regional climate model - please forward to potentially interested candidates!

thanks & best regards,

Almut

Post-doctoral position in Modelling Ecosystem-Atmosphere-Interactions

Regional land-use and land-cover changes (LULCC) affect climate change via an altered surface energy budget. Yet our quantitative understanding of how the corresponding biotic, hydrologic and atmospheric processes interact is still poor. Semi-arid and Monsoon-regions have been identified as particularly vulnerable to LULCC impacts on climate, but today’s regional coupled models are not well suited to assess dynamic LULCC impacts under present-day and future conditions.

We seek a post-doctoral researcher to

1.further develop model code to facilitate and complete ecosystem-atmosphere model coupling

2.test model systems for a range of applications in European, semi-arid and Monsoon environments

3.assess model performance against suitable observations

4.perform uncertainty analyses

The work is based on developing the coupling between high-resolution atmospheric models (WRF, MPAS), land-surface models (NOAH-MP) and a dynamic global vegetation modelling framework (LPJ-GUESS). The project is done in close collaboration with the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel, Lund University in Sweden, and other institutions mainly in Europe. The appointee must be willing to travel, and must have demonstrated excellent oral and written skills in English. The appointee will be affiliated with the KIT/IMK-IFU divisions Ecosystem-Atmosphere Interactions and Regional Climate Systems. She/he will contribute a small amount of time to broader duties in the divisions, such as project reporting and teaching.

Requirements

The candidate must have advanced knowledge in programming in C/C++/Fortran, proven experience in simulations on Linux clusters, and a degree in a quantitative environmental sciences discipline, for instance meteorology, environmental physics, or plant ecophysiology. Knowledge on soil and ecosystem processes is a clear advantage. Further assets are familiarity with one or more of the models listed above, parallel programming using MPI and/or OpenMP, and experience using the GitHub code versioning system.

We offer

A vibrant and friendly, international research environment in the beautiful surroundings of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. The salary will be equivalent to the public service TV-L EG13, depending on qualifications and experience. The appointment will be for 3 years, expected to start around summer 2017.

The positions are funded through the DFG, and the Helmholtz Association. For more information please contact Prof. Dr. Almut Arneth (Almut.arneth(at)kit.edu) and Dr. Dominikus Heinzeller (heinzeller(at)kit.edu).

Applications

Applications should be sent by email to Prof. Almut Arneth (almut.arneth(at)kit.edu) by 15 March 2017, quoting the reference number ESM-01. Please send a copy of your CV including a publication list, a short (1-2 page) letter of motivation and contact details for 2 referees. The motivation letter should clearly state your skills, and how you feel you can contribute to the main tasks. Applications that are incomplete or do not meet the requirements will not be considered.

KIT strives to achieve gender balance at all levels of employment. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply for this position. With appropriate qualifications, applications from persons with handicaps will be treated with preference.
