Hi Susan, sorry there was a long delay before I got back to you. I had other computer problems. You said you would be interested in an alternative way to change desktop icons. Here is what worked for me:

change folder colors

You can, change folder icons one at a time. To do this, first find a file with an icon you'd like to use for the folder, select it, and choose File --> Get Info. Click on the icon in the Get Info window and choose Edit-->Copy.

I find it mind boggling that 5 years ago (a 2018 "new idea" which is now closed) customers were requesting the ability to change folder colors and this still is not possible. From what I've read it's actually less flexible now than it was a few years ago...

I realize UI/UX people like things to look "pretty" but we live in a colorized world (well, except for my colorblind son) and being able to RAPIDLY distinguish between colors is imperative to moving quickly when searching through folders.

And the next step would be to go completely crazy and allow us to use our own internally-created Icons rather than mandated by DB icons. Very frustrating... We need Dropbox to help us operate faster. Not slower. Summary: Know thy customer.

For us is very interesting to customize the colour folders. One colour is better to look for very quickly on the screen the important folder specially when we have a lot folders. Other option is to assign colours by permission groups.

I agree. This has been ignored since 2018. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ADD a color-coding feature to the folders. I see someone originally asked about this in 2018 so I'm not sure this will go very far, however, I am trying to convert my family over to Dropbox and this is one of the features that everyone wants!!

the ability to change a folder color and add icons, so when I share a folder with a client they can see the different colors or icons I have used on their folders. Like folder marker that I use on Windows.

Color customization on folders would be really amazing - many underestimate the power of color-coding in improving efficiency, and may not realize how useful customizable colors have even been for them and I find that interesting as personally I have a harder time without that. Even some 5 colors would be enough. Some can do just fine with only 2 colors and I think that's cool, but a complete lack of such option is honestly a huge bummer - not to mention making the process much slower than it would've been otherwise. If not that at least some emoji or something at the beginning of the folder title would be good and enough, but still no such feature has been added. It's a huge bummer and I'm hoping some feature like that can be added in the future

Seriously? It was requested dozens of times in 2018 (FIVE FREAKING YEARS AGO) and ignored. I (OP) attempted to restart the thread (which has rec'd a fair amount of attention / comments) and now it's being mothballed again.? I sincerely appreciate the honestly / clarity ("we're not pursuing this") but I am quite serious when I say this is a GROSS miscalculation by Dropbox. Dropbox is lightyears ahead of OneDrive (the worst app I've ever encountered) but I will begin actively considering / researching other options due to not only this product shortcoming but, more importantly, Dropbox's unwillingness to listen to their customer base. This isn't just a whim request which would only benefit the people in this thread. It would benefit the entire Dropbox user base. Color-coded folders is only an annoyance. A deaf UX team is unacceptable.

The second line is a Base64 encoding of the grayscale version of this image from Burgi's answer. The script recolors the image using this algorithm, then makes an ICO using a translation of this code. Finally it saves that ICO into the folder, writes an appropriate desktop.ini, sets those files hidden so they don't get in your way, and marks the folder read-only (which is the flag that lets Explorer know to look for a desktop.ini).

To run it, first follow the instructions in the Enabling Scripts section of the PowerShell tag wiki. Save that script as a PS1 file, like foldercolor.ps1. Then you can run it in a PowerShell prompt. The first three arguments are the red, green, and blue values for the color; the fourth is the target folder.

Note: PowerShell might print an error about method invocation failing, but this is nonfatal. For some reason, BinaryWriter won't dispose on Windows 7, but it does on Windows 10. If you want to remove the error, just delete the line that ends with $_.Dispose(). There'll be a memory leak, but that doesn't matter too much since you'll probably just close PowerShell anyway.

I use a program XYplorer as a file manager, especially for projects like this. It has numerous built-in features including the ability to add color-coding to entries shown in the list pane, color, bold, and bosed subtrees in the tree pane, and automatic rules for color-coding the list.

I also have cases were a special item or two are given a distinct appearance. But I also use auto-coloring based on time. It also has filtering abilities of various kinds, to help manage huge trees like that.

Hello Kate,
sorry, I misunderstood. Unfortunately these colors are assigned randomly at this time.
A workaround that works for folders though (not subfolders) is to go to Menu>Tools>Categories and create a Mail category with the same name as your Gmail label and set the desired color.
This category is paired with the label and the color then replaces the original.

In the middle of migrating thousands of tagged/flagged/labelled emails from Outlook/Exchange to EM/G Suite and this is the bane of my life at the moment as users are all complaining about lost labels and random coloured tags on their emails.

Please define webmail. Google mail is a web app. Are you saying I need to reset the colors using Gmail? eM Client is part of my IceWarp Suite. It also sycs with the IceWarp Web Client email. Are you saying I need to reset the colors using my Web Client?

Apologies, I did not mention in this topic that folder colours for message folders are a version 10 feature. For Gmail accounts, they will sync from your webmail label colour settings. For other accounts, you can set them by right-click on the message folder in eM Client.

In my opinion there is a better way to solve this problem. I wrote more about the idea here but in brief we get rid of folder icons altogether and instead use shading for a folder visual cue. Bookmarks have no such shading while folders do. In the below example, the three left items are folders while the rest are bookmarks. By using emojis as folder names, in whole or in part, you can get as creative as you want and save a bunch of space.

A lot of good ideas here for the bookmark folders.
Being able to change the bookmark folder icons, color or other ways to easily identify the folders.
Being able to list bookmarks under other bookmarks to create groups and get rid of the folders would also work for me.

The little software called Folder Colorizer 2 from Softorino solves this in a beautiful, colorful, most charming way! Like a magical wand, it will change folder color on Windows PC making them look all fresh and bright.

Folder Colorizer helps you refresh your Windows PC. Instead of regular pale yellow folders you have them all bright and colorful. Unfortunately, there is no native way to change folder name color in Windows 10 either and it is yet to be implemented within the Folder Colorizer. Do you think there should be an option to change file name color? Let us know in the comments below.

Customizing folder icons on a Mac can add a touch of personalization and make file organization a visually appealing experience. While the process may seem complex, there is a hassle-free solution available called Image2icon.

Can you change the color of folders on Mac in some other way than described above? Yes, you can easily color code your folders for better visual identification with the help of Tags. This simple macOS feature allows you to assign specific colors to your folders.

Organizing folders with snappy colors and changing icons on a Mac is a great way to stay focused. In addition, we recommend you try a few powerful tools that offer unique functionalities and can contribute to a more efficient and clutter-free digital environment, making your life easier and enhancing your overall Mac experience.

For example, with Spotless, you can create and manage custom rules to automatically sort files into specific folders based on criteria such as file type, keyword, or extension. This intelligent file organizer saves you valuable time that would otherwise be spent manually organizing files and making sure everything is in its proper place.

Organization matters, but so does keeping your Mac healthy. Adjusting files, folders, and documents can cause a lot of unnecessary data to pile up on your Mac. This is why you should have CleanMyMac X.

The app keeps your Mac clear of unnecessary files, thwarts privacy threats, and speeds it up with its incredible Smart Scan module. Smart Scan helps you identify and clear up the simplest issues, but CleanMyMac X goes so much further.

A sea of blue folders is boring, so why not liven them up with custom icons and colors? Image2icon is a great app for those who enjoy colorful folders that reflect their ideas, content, and provide additional inspiration. Custom folder icons help identify what any folder is at a glance.

All of these apps, as well as nearly 240 more, are available for free during a seven-day trial of Setapp, an amazing platform of apps for your Mac, iPhone, and iPad. During your week-long trial, you can try all of the apps you want without paying a dime. When the trial ends, continued access to the full Setapp catalog is only $9.99 per month.
