TheElder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition is a comprehensive edition of Skyrim that bundles together the Special Edition and a total of 74 Creations which contain over 500+ new individual elements such as quests, items, armor, houses, and more. It was released on November 11, 2021 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Skyrim's release.

Anniversary Edition is available in digital format on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series XS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Switch. It is also available in physical format for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Owners of Anniversary Edition or Special Edition on Xbox Series XS and PlayStation 5 can download a free optimization update with enhanced graphics and faster loading times. Owners of Special Edition on any platform can purchase the Anniversary Upgrade separately, which contains the Creation Club content at reduced cost.

So what is Skyrim Anniversary Edition? Well, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's an elaborate self-parody by Bethesda about its habit of re-releasing The Elder Scrolls V. Instead, it's a new version of the long-running and ever-popular open world RPG from 2011 that Bethesda launched for the game's tenth anniversary. In Bethesda's words, Skyrim Anniversary Edition is "the most definitive version of Skyrim to date," which I suppose leaves us open to the very real possibility of a Skyrim Extra Special 15-Year Barrel Aged Edition five years from now. By then, arrow-in-the-knee references might even be funny again.

In any event, since the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition in November of 2021, fans old and new have been enjoying the most complete offering of Dragonborn adventures to date. Given the number of Skyrim versions that have already been released over the years, you'll want to know exactly what this one includes to decide whether it's an upgrade worth buying.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition launched November 11, 2021. That's ten years to the day since the original game came out, if you don't remember the clever "11/11/11" marketing from back then. If you already own Skyrim Special Edition from 2016, Skyrim AE is available as a DLC for your current game, rather than an entirely new game in your library.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition is not included in Xbox Game Pass. Skyrim Special Edition is, though, so Gamepass subscribers can grab Skyrim AE for the upgrade price and also get a 10% discount on that price in the Xbox Store.

Bethesda is calling the Anniversary Edition "the most definitive version of Skyrim to date." That's not the most concrete explanation, so it might help to think of Skyrim Anniversary as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition - Definitive Edition. That definitely clears things up, right?

Okay, Skyrim AE is a bit like a Game Of The Year release for Skyrim Special Edition. It includes Skyrim SE and also bundles in all of the previously released premium Creation Club additions. In practice, Skyrim Anniversary Edition is a DLC for Skyrim Special Edition, launching alongside a free game update for Skyrim SE.

If you'd forgotten about Bethesda's Creation Club, it's a marketplace of paid DLCs developed either internally by Bethesda or by approved external creators. The 48 current Creation Club items that you'll get access to as part of Skyrim AE range from special weapons, to new enemy types, quest expansions, and gameplay changes.

Some of the new Creation Club items that arrived alongside Skyrim SE include Morrowind-inspired weapons and armor and a quest expansion called The Cause. In total, Bethesda says that the 74 Creation Club items included with Skyrim AE represent over 500 new gameplay elements.

Players who don't upgrade to Skyrim AE also got four of those Creation Club items free on AE's launch day: the Saints and Seducers quest expansion, Rare Curious expansion, Survival Mode, and the Fishing skill and quests.

If you're just installing the free game update to Skyrim SE, you'll find that the free Creation Club items have all been downloaded for you. When upgrading with the Skyrim AE DLC, you'll need to head into the Creation Club section of the main menu and manually choose which pieces you want to install.

After originally preparing for the worst, the developer of Skyrim Script Extender was given early access to Skyrim AE to work on updating SKSE. At the time of writing, the latest SKSE is available on their website, and it is up an running with multiple stable patches for Skyrim AE.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition shares the same system requirements as the Skyrim Special Edition, so the good news is that you shouldn't need to worry about your machine falling out of the target specs for the upgrade.

After surviving a dragon attack, the protagonist of my latest Skyrim playthrough has not embarked on the usual heroic quest to embrace his destiny as the fabled Dragonborn. Why? Because he's too busy fishing. Skyrim Anniversary Edition is the latest version of Bethesda's world-conquering RPG, released to celebrate its tenth anniversary. It comes bundled with a mountain of add-ons and extras, including the ability to cast a line into Skyrim's crystal clear streams, lakes, and rivers and extract various kinds of fish from them.

Rather than load up one of my existing saves, I decide to start a new character and devote him entirely to becoming the greatest fisherman in all of Tamriel. I want taverns across the land to be filled with whispered tales about the mythical Salmonborn, who defied a dragon to become a fishing legend. After escaping Helgen I make my way down to the sleepy village of Riverwood. Usually I'd start the Bleak Falls Barrow quest here and begin my career as an adventurer, but that's far too dangerous and exciting. Why fight dirty Draugur in a dark, dingy old dungeon when I could enjoy the great outdoors and catch fish instead?

By a stream running through the village, I find an old wooden rod, a bucket of bait, and a book explaining the basics of how to fish. Written by an angler calling himself Aland Sea-Bird, this dusty tome only makes me more determined to embrace the fish life. "I've fished in waters open and deep, amidst storms no mortal dare brook," the yellowed pages of the book read. "I've ventured down bottomless caves and have challenged the monsters of the deep with my hook." Man, forget the saga of the Dragonborn: this is the stuff of legends.

You don't have to worry about bait or lures. Once your line is in, it's just a matter of watching and waiting. Fish will tug gently at the line at first, then give it a yank, which is your cue to quickly hit a button and reel them in. You don't have to tap it or anything: it just happens. Sometimes you catch a fish, other times you snag junk like old boots. One time I caught a decent ancient Nord dagger, which leads me to believe there might be some more valuable loot to fish up. It's as basic as fishing minigames get, but it's still managed to hook me in.

Another page in Sea-Bird's book points me towards a fishery in the city of Riften. I hike over to Whiterun, take a carriage there, and talk to an Argonian fisherman called Swims-In-Deep-Water. He points me in the direction of nearby fishing spots, gives me a list of fish to catch, and says he'll pay me for any I bring back. I spend the next 40 minutes wandering around the serene lakes and rivers of the Rift, searching for fishing points, and loading up my inventory with my stinky, slippery prey. I end up with pockets full of carp and glassfish.

It's a refreshingly peaceful, laid back way to engage with Skyrim's beautiful, atmospheric world. It forces you to stop and absorb your surroundings in a way the regular game never really does. It's just you, a fishing rod, the lapping of the water, and the distant howl of the freezing wind. I also appreciate how the fishing points have all been placed in particularly scenic areas of the map, which means you're always treated to a nice view as you fish. The simplicity of the fishing itself, which demands zero effort, only adds to this feeling of zen.

After catching the first batch of fish on Swims-In-Deep-Water's list, he gives me another: this time of fish that can only be caught in the rain. This gives me a sinking feeling, because Skyrim's weather is randomised, and having to put my fishing adventure on hold until the sky opened up sounded like a needless chore. Then I spot a bonus objective. Apparently my Argonian friend lost a lucky fishing hat that, when worn, makes it rain. I fish it out of a lake, and lo and behold, it starts chucking it down whenever I'm wearing it.

Fishing in the rain is even more relaxing. I always knew the sound design in Skyrim was great, but stopping and really listening as I fish, the atmosphere is remarkable. Alas, after a morning spent on the waterways of the Rift, I had to drag myself away from the game to come and write this. But I'm looking forward to seeing more of what these fishing quests have to offer. Apparently I'll be able to keep my catches in aquariums, when I actually have enough money to buy a house. I'm also looking forward to fishing the icy waters of the far north.
