Dear Abdul Haleem Kidwai Bhai,

Mian is highly castiest, feudal and ashrafiya terminology. Which has been used  exclusively for lower caste Muslims to remind them that they r lowly born, historically. The AMU culture has still the preserve, propagate and practice this feudal mindset. But after graduating from TISS we r become little sensitive about this kind feudalistic terminology/mindset, at least I expect from tissian. My ancestors has denounce this kind of feudalistic low category name like 'jumman mian', 'sobarati mian', 'jumerati mian' etc. For that they have also paid tremendous price and brought us for respecting name for us. And it's my duty that I should respect/preserve their struggle.

So my humble request with you every aligarian. Don't add or call me with 'mian' or 'miya' terminology. I know we all r graduate from amu and have learnt this terminology from 'alig tehzib' or 'amu tradition'. But we r no more part of alig now. And must respect someone sentiment and feelings and must avoid using derogatory remarks/abusive terminology. Hope I have made my stand clear.

Second thing, I think we have created this page/group mail for some aim and purpose. I know many from this group are familiar with each other(but not all). So those who are familiar with each other have options to create one common mail for gossip. Let's this mail serve the purpose for which it has been created.

Thanks.. and sorry for those who r not involved with this conversation.

Respected Khursheed
Pls tell us sth more abt the term "miyan" or suggest any reading for the same
Secodly, AMU of my time was not as elitist and casteist as u r writing. Most boys were from poor families.
They never spoke about caste and class. they knew that Shias-Sunnis, Deobandis and Barelvis, and above all Wahabis.
UPites and Biharis used to fight. Gazipuris used violence at the drop of hat!
But all died for cricket and bollywood films. Shahi paneer i first had in Tasveer Mahal, not Poonam hotal!
and yes at dark n deep night, i had Rasalgunj ki chai!
They wanted to keep their women protected from heat and dust. Some was ascetic- our jamati bhais.
Most boys helped me. I am indebted to AMU. Yes, i am not like most Alig.
But i know that Muslims in India are backward and i belong to that section.
I want a peaceful world like the garden of Sir Syed House where i passed my time after Friday prayer
I keep on discussing urdu poetry with Shahid bhai

Dear brothers and sisters, pls correct me if i am wrong. But that was my AMU (2003-2008) and i hope so was yours
An AMU famous for machchar and Matri :D
And yes, I am proud of the fact that i met my Irfan Habib there, and I am with him from then on :)
Vo mera chaman hai, mera chaman....

I second Zeeshan bhai, some pseudo-intellectuals (Or attention seekers, you may call them) have been striving to fabricate the non-existent history of AMU. I have never been exposed to caste discrimination in/around AMU campus. Infact, AMU is the only place where you will come across many bad things barring caste (as Zeeshan Bhai clearly articulated).

It is hard reality of the society that has created social stratification in the name of religion, caste, class or gender. But by and large caste is nothing to do with AMU .

Stop blaming existence of caste system in AMU campus for God's sake.

Dear all,

I love you all.

I am sure, small talks are needed to keep the group alive. If Khursheed is more aware about caste  he can enlighten us. I am sure he does not want to antagonise. He love us and we all love him. I love him the most :).

Importantly, I deliberately reiterate that we need to share informally and not mere for work. Machine always operate on reason and humans with reason+ emotions. Fun is always needed to keep the warmth.

We shall whatever we want and may keep it subtle and caring for all.

Have fun.

I apologize for the delay in responding, I have been travelling.

Let me be clear, I am sorry for offending you and I apologize for the same. I will be more careful about the usage of the word Mian.

But just to clarify my usage, here are my thoughts. First and foremost, my usage was not directed to be offensive or derogatory. You yourself point that out in the email. You rightly say that this word was (and very likely that it is still used) in a derogatory manner exclusively for lower caste Muslims. But at the same time, in Aligarh, it is used universally. Before addressing someone as Mian, no one checks the caste location of the addressee. It is not uncommon to hear strangers using Mian for each other. Expressions such as "Arrey Mian, dekh ke chaliye", "Mian, law faculty kahaan hai?" are common. Clearly, in these instances, they don't ask the caste and then use the word.

And it is also used amongst friends as an affectionate way of calling one another. I myself I have been called Haleem Mian so many times. I have addressed others as Mian too, irrespective of their caste identity. So has my brother. And so many other people do so on campus. I know this is anecdotal evidence, but I am sure you will also agree that Mian is not used as an offensive term in the context of Aligs.

Furthermore, my sense is that even in popular culture and everyday interaction, the word Mian is used more in the sense of signifying a Muslim, rather than lower caste Muslims. For instance, I wouldn't be surprised at all of someone called Zakir Bagh (an upscale Muslim apartment complex in Delhi) as a Mian Bhai locality, even though I am sure it's residents are mostly upper caste. But of course, this is my gut feeling, I might be mistaken. What do other members think? Even the recent Shah Rukh movie, Raees, used Mian as indicator of Muslim rather than his caste. Wikipedia claims that he was Shaikh, but then again, it is Wikipedia, not the most reliable source. Anyway, my claim is that the association between Mian and caste might not be airtight in the popular imagination.

In brief, my point is that you are right that in a certain context, it's use is indeed casteist. And also as Zeeshan Bhai suggested it would be great to send some references for the same, so we can all be better informed and sensitive. But also in certain contexts, it is not used in a casteist manner. I (mistakenly) thought this was one such context, but if it offends you, I will of course refrain from using it. Language is a funny thing, it's meaning is not fixed, changes with time and place. Think of the word "working woman", I would immediately think it refers to a professional woman, but in some contexts, it is used to refer to a prostitute. Of course, what one means by it, depends on the context it is being used. Finally, if it wasn't already clear, the part about gossiping was a joke.

Above all, the spirit of this group is clearly alive which makes me very happy :)
