Hi Chris,

Antonia has just joined the group officially and she is already working on exporting the google code repositories to github.

One option we have is to do a clean start, or to keep a history of previous commits.

We also plan to use the google code svn branch 'julien' as a stable release as this is the version of Sire I am the most familiar with. At the moment we do not have plans to port/use the 'devel' or 'chryswoods' branches.

Do you have any preference/request for the best way forward ?

Best wishes,

PS: It might make sense to have you join the Michel lab organisation https://github.com/michellab

Hi Chris,

here are my thoughts. So the repository is quite large > 700 MB, I don't know at this point how much of this is relevant code and how much is overhead. I see there are essentially three options to go about doing the move from google code.

1. create an empty repository in the Michel Lab organisation and manually add the master branch, i.e. the currently most stable version of Sire, then create a devel branch from that and people can then branch off from the devel branch their feature branches.
This means the commit history will be 'lost'.

2. Move to github using the export option google code offers, which should as far as I understand move all the commit history as well.

3. Move to github using the export option from google code tidy the branches in that repository but in the end, migrate to a new clean repository that does not contain the whole commit history.
The google code export option should work in the case of the repository, since it is less than 1 GB and does not have more than 1000 issues as far as I can see.

What are your thoughts? Since I will be getting more familiar with the code in the next few days, I would like to make the move as soon as possible so that I can start working on some things.

Also what is your github username, so that I can add you to the michellab organisation.

Best,
Antonia

Hi Julien and Antonia,

I am happy with your plans to move to github. I suggest that you treat
this as a fresh start and build the repository in the way that you
want. I am happy for you to use the julien branch as your main stable
branch and to create a repository using this as the single branch from
which you can grow. I don't think that there is a need to preserve the
commit history in github.

My github username is "chryswoods" (email "chrys...@gmail.com").

Best wishes,

Christopher
