We're having a strange issue with Speed Dials at the moment. For some reason, I can no longer add any numbers as a speed dial to someone if they do not exist within our system. For example, I can add the number 5173 to a user's speed dial options, but I could not add *765173 to make an intercom button. I have also found that this is also the case if I tried to make an external phone number. I have tried restarting the server to see if that would help, but it did not seem to change anything. Anyone have any suggestions on what to look for? Specs are below.

Phone: Polycom IP 650
Version: Sipxcom 14.10
Phone Software: 4.0.9

If you are trying to do this within sipxcom admin UI, make sure you don't enable subscribe for presence checkbox

Yup! The system doesn't even allow me to click that check box. I am doing it through the admin gui though is there another way to do it? I'm assuming manually specifying it in the CFG file for that phone on the server correct?

That would explain why I couldn't set up the *76 as a speed dial, but it doesn't really explain why I can't set my cell phone number as an external speed dial sadly.

I have no issues with speed dials using the old-style web portal in 15.08 accessed via Firefox - the new web portal (System->Admin Settings) disallows special characters such as the star(*) key and definition of internal/external numbers at times. I'd also experiment with different browsers. Peter

I'm not sure if a few people are misunderstanding my issue, but the speed dials show up in the portal. We are still using the old style portal, and the phone configuration in the web interface lists it as having those speed dials attached to that user. However, they do not show up on the phone itself.

I've seen this issue. Ensure all numbers that have presence available are first in the speed dial list. Ensure outside numbers are below those numbers. I recall at least once that intermixing them caused the list to not appear.

Then your phones are likely not getting config updates from the server -
verify that by sending profiles, and monitor the traffic from config
server for whichever protocol you're using to push config (FTP, TFTP,
HTTP(S)).

If the server is sending the files, monitoring at the phone to make sure
they are received and processed would be the next step. Quick way to
check is to browse to the phone's web ui and check the logs.

So I can say that I can add or remove  a speed dial fine, but only as long as they are an extension that we have as a user on this campus already. If I try to change it on anything else, it doesn't work. I've also tried putting the BLF's on top of the speed dials, and then removing the presence and speed dials attached to those that were working all together. I probably won't be able to wireshark anything until Monday. Does anyone know what file specifically the phone will check for its speed dials? Is that the (Macaddress).cfg file in tftproot?

<macaddress>-directory.xml.

So the configuration for it is definitely in the file. I'm also noticing that any speed dials added are not added to the contact directory on my phone. I believe that may be the issue, or at least related to the issue.

It sounds like you may have a local contact directories, preventing some entries from the server from being applied. Make sure the Phone->Directory Resources-> Read Only Local Directory option on the phone is enabled. Peter

Good point Peter.  Factory reset the phone / wipe all local configuration.

Also, speed dials != contact directory.  Contact directory is generated from the Phonebook part of sipXcom.

I have seen this before. I posted about why I couldn't change the label on a phone (it was in the config file but the phone refused to change this). My solution was to remove the line from the phone, apply, add the line back to the phone, apply. Then send profiles.

1. So it's definitely set to read only for the contact directory for that phone. I was hoping that was it, but sadly it's not.

2. I have factory reset the phone before. Didn't help, and it's not the only phone having the issue sadly.

3.I made sure to remove all of the lines and speed dials from both the phone and user account and try to add them back one by one, but I still get the same result.

I'd still suggest checking the phone logs to be sure 1) the phone is
getting <mac>-directory.xml and 2) is processing it.

Log into the web ui of a phone, clear/delete logs; send profile/reboot
the phone, then check the logs. The logging will list all files the
phone received, and gives some very basic info about any errors
processing parameters.

So here's a bunch of information that I've found. Interestingly enough, I don't see it pulling the <mac>-directory.cfg file into the phone. Not sure why that would be, or why I can change the speed dials without that file uploading to the phone. Any suggestions?

Here are things I normally check for when speed dials are not being updated correctly:
  1. Go the the /var/sipxdata/configserver/phone/profile/tftproot directory, either via root or SFTP utility like Filezilla.
  2. Check the macaddress-sipx-features.cfg file - ascertain the dir.local.readonly setting is set to "1"
  3. Check the macaddress-directory.xml file - ascertain that it looks similar to the speeddial list assigned via Sipxcom GUI to the phone
  4. If it looks similar, change one character in the label - e.g. 'Intercom' to 'Intercom1'
  5. Go to the Polycom Phone GUI - in the Settings->Logging->Module Log level limits section, set the copy utilities option to 'Debug' - if you don't this, the log file doesn't display whether the macaddress-directory.xml file was successfully copied. Save that setting on the Polycom phone via the GUI. As an aside, this can also be set via the Sipxcom->Phone-> Logging menu.
  6. Clear the Polycom log file in the Diagnostics section of the Polycom GUI
  7. Go to the Sipxcom Devices->Phones section, select the phone being updated for speed dial update and hit the 'restart' button. Do not select the 'send profiles' option - this will rebuild the macaddress-directory file in the ../tftproot directory in step 4. You want to see whether the change in step 4 was applied and the label now shows 'Intercom1' instead of Intercom. The phone 'restart' option sends a command to the phone that re-reads the configuration files from the provisioning server
In the Phone GUI Diagnostics log section with the copy utilities option set to debug (step 5), you should see a message similar to the following:
0825135243|copy |3|00|Differences found. Updating file /ffs0/user/0004f2aee727/0004f2aee727-directory.xml_tmp
0825135243|copy |3|00|Download of '0004f2aee727-directory.xml' succeeded on attempt 1 (addr 1 of 1)
0825135243|copy |3|00|buffered_write: transfer terminated

These steps should help you pinpoint the root cause of why speed-dials aren't being updated corrected on phones.

It looks like it's definitely failing to FTP certain items. I was having an issue with FTP last week where it was looking for a different folder than the one I had specified for the application files. It was going to a 2.0 folder rather than the 4.0.X folder I had set up. I wonder if this is related. Logs below.

It is too big for phone to handle it ...

Huh, I didn't think it was that big of a file since we only have about 400 users in it. The directory is listed as being at 101K. I guess that must be too much for Polycom 650's.

That's right on the edge.  Depends on how long names are, etc...

I just manually went into my own directory and removed a bunch of numbers to get it smaller. After doing to I restarted my phone and got it working fine. I've since found a bunch of extensions that no longer need to be in the contact directory. Fixing this has also fixed the issue I was having with speed dials. Thank you so much for all your help!
