We have upgraded a lab server to 17.08 and testing XMPP and Instant Messaging, but believe this question is broader and covers other releases. Does anyone have a working softclient with Sipxcom that can display call status for contacts and demonstrate XMPP/IM capability?

I'm working with Bria release 5, which now returns 489 event package not supported back to the voice server based on Sipxcom subscribe requests from the RLS service. In tracing down this issue, Counterpath removed RLS and workgroup functionality from their client starting in release 4.3.

Any guidance here is appreciated - many thanks in advance.

All the best
Peter

P..S. Here is a snippet from the Counterpath 4.3 release notes:

Removed Features:

Bria no longer includes the following features:
  • Workgroup/BLF: If you order a custom brand, you might be able to include this feature depending on your back end implementation. Contact your CounterPath sales representative.
  • HID headsets support
  • Deskphone support: it is available for custom brands only.
  • Presence agent mode for SIP based IM/Presence: it is available for custom brands only.
  • WebDav as a way to store contacts in Bria
  • XCAP as a way to store contacts in Bria
  • Dialing via command line

Have you tried Voice Operator Panel?

Alternatively, try Jitsi and you might test beta with Zoiper...

Pidgin showed when someone is oncall if enabled (on uniteme/OUC) not sure about sipxcom

Thanks Mihai/Mike. Jitsi support for SIP accounts is limited to Simple protocol - only Jitsi Google Talk supports XMPP. I looked at Pidgin and tried all the login protocol options - am unable to get the client to register to Sipxcom. Downloaded the latest version of Linphone with the Web-based GUI interface, but it crashes whenever an incoming call is placed. I'll try an older release.

One of the big requirements is integration with existing internal directories which is Bria is strong. I've asked Counterpath to provide us some trial custom loads with the RLS/workgroup capability re-enabled before exploring the commercial version of Zoiper.

Appreciate the responses - thanks again.

All the best

Not sure what you're talking about with Jitsi...  It supports SIP for calling and Jabber/XMPP.

And it can be provided from web admin right in sipXcom.

You may be right here. When one adds a new account in JITSI,select the advanced radio button and go to the presence tab, the enable presence option is checked by default. I interpreted it as meaning that Simple is the only presence protocol supported, I now see in the Options -> Advanced menu that there is an XMPP tab as it is enabled by default. Let me try this evening with the enable presence (Simple) option disabled.

It’s definitely supported by VoiceOperatorPanel.   XMPP, SIP, and import of directories from Outlook.    There are a ton of features in that software.

Presence (blf) is really controlled in sipXcom. Don't worry about SIP presence.

I spent a couple of hours this morning in the lab playing around with JITSI and Sipxcom trying to get IM and presence working. I did get presence working one time by enabling both presence and peer-peer presence mode - however could not get it to work consistently with multiple client, I also could not get IM to work at any time. Will spend more time on this integration next week.

More to come.

Your presence should come over xmpp, not SIP.

Understand what you are saying for IM presence, but there is also a requirement for presence integration with desktop phones. This morning, I got Bria 5 XMPP presence and instant messaging, and SIP presence between softclients working with Windows, MAC IPAD, and Android clients using Sipxcom 17.08. What Counterpath has removed and appears may deliver on a custom request is the RLS/workgroup capability required for SIP phone desktop support- it is described towards the end of this document http://wiki.sipxcom.org/display/sipXcom/Basic+Bria+Configuration+with+Sipxecs+4.6.

In Bria 5, the SIP and XMPP contact information are 'separate' accounts that are configured as XMPP or SIP when the accounts are defined. SIP presence and peer-to-peer capability is required to get SIP presence from other Bria softclients. On XMPP accounts, the password for the user portal is used for authentication rather than the SIP password (took me some time to figure that out as the XMPP messages don't highlight authentication errors). On the MAC and Android Bria clients, Bria clearly separates SIP contacts from XMPP buddies. In the Windows version, the SIP/XMPP contact lists are integrated so I used a naming convention of 'Sara Smith'  and Sara Smith IM' to clearly distinguish which contacts are used for SIP calls versus XMPP presence.

I assume the JITSI client works in a similar fashion but without desktop phone support.

More to come - thanks again.

I couldn't figure out why you were having so much trouble with XMPP...  using the SIP password explains it :-)

RLS will publish to XMPP but not the other way around.

Yes, the small details do matter  :( ....

Is there a brief description of how to configure Sipxrls to publish to XMPP, and what it publishes. I am curious.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Peter,

i see you try to use Bria 5. Counterpath implements some "security" function that breaks incomming calls when using more than one Proxy. They took the informations from the DNS-SRV Record, but forget to whitelist the server they did not use to register. So if you are registered at Proxy1, incomming calls via Proxy2 are blocked. So Bria 5 is not the best choice atm.

I already opened a ticket at Counterpath for this to implement this correctly with SRV Records, but i got no response until now.

Thanks Benedikt - I do see the issue during testing. I also see an issue during failover testing that when a BYE is issued from a Polycom phone, it never reaches the Bria client - the Sipx proxy immediately issues a 408 timeout back to the Polycom phone and nothing is sent to Bria. I'm not sure whether both incidents are related to the issue you identified. When DNS SRV weights are adjusted to have all clients registered to the primary server,  the incoming call issue disappears. Bria is currently being evaluated because of its strong directory management - will make sure this issue gets tabled if the discussion gets to licensing.

All the best
Peter
