Outbound Proxy

In a single server setup it is necesary to "write" the Outbound Proxy value  on the phones ?

Or when it is recommended ? on my setup I have Grandstream phones and  AudioCodes  MP-114 FXO gateway and SIP trunks as well  mostly for incoming 800 calls  and some for outside call when the land lines has some troubles

Personally, I've never found a use case requiring it.
