Thisis the second installment of an LDF series examining the recent rise of anti-truth laws. Read the first installment here. Read the second installment here. The third installment examining why truthful, inclusive education benefits all students and how to make it happen can be read here.
The concerted effort to impede racial justice in America through Orwellian measures banning, censoring, and otherwise suppressing conversations about race we see metastasizing today are the latest examples of a pattern observable throughout American history.
LDF has compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions about Critical Race Theory. Learn more about CRT, laws banning racial justice discourse, and how these fit into a larger effort to suppress the voices, history, and political participation of Black Americans.
LDF is at the forefront of the fight to ensure that America lives up to the ideals of justice and equality for all. The right to free expression and the right to vote are cornerstones of our democracy. LDF and coalition partners are fighting back to protect truth.
The lives of Southern black people changed immeasurably during the war years. In the midst of a see-saw struggle that promised freedom as well as desolation, these men, women, and children made difficult and highly personal decisions in extraordinary circumstances.
When the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863, Union forces had regained control of large swaths of the South. Although many now claim that the Proclamation was effectively useless because it established policy for a foreign nation, the practical reality is that the Union, by force of arms, had every necessary power to establish policy in its occupied territories, just as Confederate armies exercised their power to capture and enslave free black people during their brief occupations of Northern territories.
After the Proclamation, the refugees in the contraband camps, along with free black people throughout the North, began to enlist in the Union Army in even greater proportion than Northern white men. After some time in legal limbo, many Southern black men took up arms against their former masters and distinguished themselves on campaign and on the battlefield. By the time the war was over, black soldiers made up 10% of the Union Army and had suffered more than 10,000 combat casualties.
Some black Southerners aided the Confederacy. Most of these were forced to accompany their masters or were forced to toil behind the lines. Black men were not legally allowed to serve as combat soldiers in the Confederate Army--they were cooks, teamsters, and manual laborers. There were no black Confederate combat units in service during the war and no documentation whatsoever exists for any black man being paid or pensioned as a Confederate soldier, although some did receive pensions for their work as laborers. Nevertheless, the black servants and the Confederate soldiers formed bonds in the shared crucible of conflict, and many servants later attended regimental reunions with their wartime comrades.
Active fighting ended less than three weeks after the law was passed, and there is no evidence that any black units were accepted into the Confederate Army as a result of the law. Whatever black combat service might have occurred during the war, it was not sanctioned by the Confederate government. Even beyond the Official Records, there is no known letter, diary entry, or any other primary source in which a Confederate mentions serving with black soldiers.
The aroma was glorious. Big roasted and burnt grain notes ran deep. Complex layers of dark fruit and floral hops rested atop warm coffee notes. In fact, the hops offered a light counterpart resulting and a deep black chai-like spice. Hints of plums, some dates, and honey cascaded up with the help of the yeast strain which added a pleasant dimension. It kept the beer from being, just another heavy American imperial stout really. The nose was soft and delicate, yet containing great depth. I could pick out the oatmeal-like qualities and for the most part the abv was very well hidden.

White lies break the trust as in the story about the shepherd boy and the wolf, the boy falsely signals that the wolf is attacking the sheep. The whole village arrives and sees he is only pulling their legs. The third time, when the wolf actually appears, the boy makes the signal again. And nobody comes. Because nobody trusts a liar. (If you haven't heard this story before, I am sorry you had such a difficult childhood). White lies are still lies. And most lies get discovered. When they do, they completely shatter the trust in someone. And with it, the relationship as well.
Are white lies good or bad? When I was young, whenever I didn't want to go out with my friends, I would come up with some silly excuse. A table tennis practice suddenly moved three hours forward. An urgent homework I forgot to do earlier. A non-existing visit to a non-existing family. It was easy to justify these white lies. A general consensus is they help us avoid hurt other people's feelings. But it is well known general consensuses are often bullshit. There are several problems with white lies:
White lies lead to bigger lies. The problem with white lies is they create a moral reference in which lying is justified. Which inevitably leads to bigger lies. The guilt involved with the act of lying slowly wears off. After a while, the white liar is "hooked" to lying. Just like weaker drugs lead to stronger drugs, white lies lead to bigger lies. White lies are a vague form of communication. In the 21st century, we have become champions of indirect communication. We are afraid to express our opinion because someone might take it personally. We are afraid to say we like someone so we resort to hints and manipulations instead. We are afraid to state the obvious so we use euphemisms and soft language instead.
White lies are still lies just like black lies. White lies are usually to protect someone in some form be it the liar for a reason or who they lie to. They are meant to be harmless bit are still lies. Black lies are harmful. A white lie is a lie told, by one whom convinces themselves that the truth will hurt someone. A black lie is an evil lie told to purposely hurt, endanger or cause loss of life or spirit. But to tell the truth, a lie is a lie no matter why it is told & shows no love. It is said that God (Spirit) is Love. We (spirit) are made in His image (Spirit not flesh). So if we tell a lie for whatever reason you dishonor God the Spirit & Love. In doing so you dishonor yourself (spirit or image of god within).
I have heard some one say people can't handle the truth. The truth is not to be handled, it is to be respected. If someone tells you a truth even if it is their opinion until you find out for sure or you know it to be truth, respect it. God does, He loves the truth in your spirit. And despises the lies of an evil heart. To tell the truth id to say I love you and I love myself enough to tell you truth. Yes, you say, feelings may get hurt but, that's the beauty of Love, It is given the power to heal & forgive. Love is Truth. Seek God (Spirit/Love/Truth) in all things, even if you don't believe in God.
As far as I know is that all lies are bad but I myself call them Forgivable Lies and Evil Lies because it sounds less racist, Light/White Lies: These are the lies you say to fix a relationship problem or a fight between two people and sometimes to defend an innocent person and cannot be defending a bad person or it would be evil lie. As an example: (your friend broke up with her boyfriend because he was looking at a woman the whole time and you then came and told your friend that this woman is his friend or a relative and they are used to each other).
Dark/Black Lies. It is the lie that you say to defend yourself after doing an evil act or to deny the truth and sometimes to defend evil people and claiming that they are good while they are not. As an example: (Your friend killed someone and he was scared to say the truth and you were scared for him and you said that the victim suicided or someone killed him to escape and that is very wrong and will likely land on the wrong person). I do not recommend lying at all even white lies, but there are some moments where it recommends lying but not to defend an evil thing or denying the truth.
We cannot directly see black holes with any light we know how to detect. But we can see them indirectly, based on how they influence the matter around them. This includes observations of how objects move around black holes, or how light is distorted.
Not satisfied with indirect evidence? Enter the gravitational wave discovery, first announced in February 2016 and with a second detection announced in June 2016. By directing two lasers beams down a long tunnel and looking for abnormalities in how the light travels, scientists detected a ripple in space itself. The ripple matched the predicted signal of two colliding black holes, giving us direct evidence for their existence.
But, like the possibility of forward time travel, huge tidal forces is not a phenomenon unique to black holes. Jupiter, for instance, is so massive that it causes its moons to squeeze and stretch, leading to a heated core and volcanic activity.
Because gravity quickly gets more powerful the closer you get to a black hole, a person who (hypothetically) travels feet-first towards a black hole could have their feet pulled faster than their head, and their sides crushed inwards. As they continue to travel towards the black hole, the effect would be amplified until they are eventually ripped into a string of individual atoms in a process called spaghettification.
