My HP printer worked perfectly fine on High Sierra. I had brought my Macbook Pro in to Apple Care, who installed a new hard drive and Mojave. Since getting the computer back, I cannot set up my printer. My printer is listed as a compatible one, but it does not appear as a printer through Airprint, and I cannot download the driver software. I have tried resetting printer settings and disconnecting and reconnecting the printer. I CAN still airprint through my phone, so it does not appear to be a printer issue.

hp envy 4500 driver install

Create a new Admin Account, and see if you can print from that account (Installing with the drivers mentioned above). If you can print, then it would be a configuration of sorts in your current account causing this.

The HP ENVY 4500 printer has worked well in the past. It no longer allows scanning from my laptop. Control Panel Cevices and Printers shows that the Printer Driver is not available. I have uninstalled the printer software and reinstalled it several times, but is still does not work.

I tried once again to update the printer drivers but received the same message "Windows encountered a problem installing the drivers for your device." "Windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install them."

I was able to use the original CD disk that came with the printer. It allowed the printer install process to complete. The printer will now allow for printing but not scanning. When I run HP Print and Scan Doctor for scanning it hangs at

Create TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right click the printer and left click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:
Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port under the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

I followed the steps that you recommended twice without being able to resolve the issue. Both times the printer would print a test page and request that it be put on the glass for scanning (alignment procedure). Both times the printer screen message indicated to place paper in the feeder tray, place test page on the glass, then press the "OK" button. Both times the scanner bar would move a few millimeters and then stop / hang with no futher progress. [Requiring power off, unplug everything, etc]

I tried the steps you suggested a third time and did not place paper in the feeder tray as suggested on the printer display screen. I did not want it to print yet another test page (was my thinking / intent). Well, since it didn't find paper in the feeder tray it skipped the test page and alignment procedure and the printer display screen changed to the normal baseline Copy / Scan / Wireless Direct / ... etc screen. I was then able to copy and also "scan to computer" and "scan from computer". Success, I guess!

I was not able to scan using Microsoft Windows 10 scanner software (app). It start scanning but stopped after 2 or 3 seconds and a message box popped up "Problem scanning" "Something went wrong. Please try again." I tried several times, but no luck. The fact that this software is not useable is not a big deal to me. Just letting you know in case it is not a known problem.

I gave ShlomiL the Accepted Solution, but I used several of your suggestions as well. I followed the "Create TCP IP port" instructions. I also installed the NAPS2 software which seems to work very well (thanks).

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention is that I ran Print and Scan Doctor 5.1 and the "Fix Printing" completed fully without stopping or error messages. However, when selecting "Fix Scanning" it would hang at the "Windows (WIA) scan" point in the procedure and not complete successfully.

I tried Print and Scan Doctor 5.1 "Fix Scanning" several times (just for verification that all is proper) with no success (hangs at the "Windows (WIA) scan" point) even though the printer and scanner seems to mostly (a couple of times when requesting a scan it took a second try) work correctly now.

I try to install my printer HP-ENVY-4500 with cups and hplip and i don't understand why in notification area (HPLIP status service) I get name of my printer like if everything is O.K and is just no events but when I look in the HP Device manager there is no printer added. CUPS web interface answer me when i try to add one:

and when i try to print something -there is only " print to the file" option. With HPLIP I'd found good PPD file without problem- but after installation -there nothing happend.
Like if I never do anything
Printer work fine in Virtualbox machine L-MINT -and i know that I can't use in one time with VM and host. Thanks for all help - is 2 weeks now - and i have no more ideas..
lsusb show me this printer like:

There are two ways of installation in this note - and I tried both- with this same resault. Now were no even small problem with CUPS web UI installation mode - after reboot my -stil I can found my printer in "manage printers" of CUPS.

like if my problem should be solved - but after "Print Preview" I get message "Failed to print document - The selected printer '(null)' could not be found " - and for printing directly without previev - is like before - only option for "Print to the file" - and no printer there.
Thank you for interessing about my problem - any more idea ? HA!! Just now I'd open PRINT SETTINGS and there is info:"Printing service not available . Start the service on this computer or connect to the another server ." So meaby its problem with some deamon? -I'll try!

No - that's not a problem with deamon or permission.. I SOLVED this problem with a wonderfull package system-config-printer- after reboot again -easy,fast and absolutly for newbies like me.Everything works great - THANKS A LOT -AGAIN.

Xfce !! but i have many packages of gnome and KDE . In reality that's was not a finish of my printer troubles .: How I saw after some task in /something-??-don't remember/bin/ called 'cupsd -l' was eating 40 - 75% of CPU all the time. I had to disebled deamon for cups -and now it's work like should to. I dont understand reason - is it because i started and enabled deamon few times (if is possible ?) or meaby there was a fight for a priority rights between CUPS deamon and system-config-printer wich is nothing else than CUPS configuration tool.
Anyway - without org.cups.cupsd.service my machine can print ,scan and Idon't wait 1'30s for close remote service when I shut down (yeh-that I observed also -even if i never agree remote option - that could be to complicated for me if more than 2 weeks i spend with traditional USB connection ).

GTK3 based DE's and KDE seem to use their own printing system, and this takes over many things from cups.
If you stick to cups OR that DE printing system for configuration things usually work.
Mixing them often leads to trouble.

I have an HP ENVY 4500 e-all-in-one printer. It installed & prints successfully. But the scanner function does not work. Simple Scan says no scanner detected. I ran the command sudo sane-find-scanner & the scaner was also not detected.

Had this trouble when I first installed 18.04. IIRC a line of code had to be taken out, then flawless. Didn't use 20.04. The original install on 22.04 worked great. Now last week's update and back to the above referenced topic title. Have looked at HP and Ubuntu support sites and attempted to try some of their suggestions. Sorry I didn't document what I did to fix things four years ago and some of the flailing around that I've done since last night's attempt to scan. The printer function works fine. UPDATE-- Still can't get the Ubuntu 22.04 scan driver to work, but I was able to work around things a bit by installing the HP Smart App on my phone. That took a bit of fumbling around, forgot how old those Envy 4500 printers are.

Using the HP Android ap seems to work OK, although it involves uploading then downloading to my computer and they're always nagging me about my ink levels. This happened to me with 18.04 and it was a simple one line fix. Hopefully it will show up again. This time I'll document carefully for further updates.

The HP ENVY 4500 printer model has individual environmental specifications that involve the operating conditions. An example is a temperature range between 5 and 400C, and a humidity range between 15 and 80% RH non-condensing. However, for storage, the acceptable range is between -40 and 600C. This product is also an energy-star rated printer which indicates its suitability for the environment and saves natural resources.

The power properties of this HP ENVY 4500 printer involve a maximum power consumption of 85 watts and 50 watts on the average. Also, it allows an input range between 100 and 240 volts while the output current is 50 to 60 Hz. The output voltage is 32 Volts of a DC, which is equivalent to 1300 mA. Furthermore, the compatible network protocol is the TCP/IP and an embedded web server for remote printer maintenance.

As a multifunction HP printer, it is capable of printing, copying, scanning, and sending or receiving fax messages. Among the outstanding specifications of digitization is the image editor inclusion and twain compliance software interface. At the same time, the resolution is up to 1200 x 2400 pixels per inch (PPI) at an optical level. However, the maximum resolution is 19200 enhanced PPI with the aid of the software. The color depth is 48-bit while the grayscale is 8-bit at 256 levels of gray.
