Amy Kurland, a former waitress, opened the Bluebird Caf on June 3, 1982, using an inheritance she received from her grandmother.[1] Initially, it was intended to be just a cafe, but Kurland agreed to allow friends to provide live music. The cafe became a loud late-night location for Nashville musicians. After the cafe hosted a "writer's night" to benefit World Hunger Year, the event became a regular fixture at the cafe, giving local songwriters a chance to showcase their latest work acoustically.[1][3]

After the female songwriters noted that most of the songwriters performing were men, in 1988, they launched "Women In The Round"; regular performers included Pam Tillis, Karen Staley, Ashley Cleveland, and Trisha Walker.[5][6]

The Bluebird Caf Scrapbook, written by Kurland, was published in 2002. It is a history of the club, its writers, events, and employees, as told by the writers, employees, and other witnesses.[10]

The cafe is referenced in the Foo Fighters song "Congregation", released in October 2014.[15] On May 7, 2014, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl performed an hour-long surprise solo acoustic set at the cafe.[16]

Cafe Racer reopened this weekend, seven weeks after Ian Stawicki opened fire in the University District hangout, killing four people. On Friday, just a day after another man opened fire in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater, crowds in Seattle turned out to the cafe to show their support.Published on July 22, 2012 Gus and Annie onstage, accompanied by a photo of Drew and Joe.

Wow! We had some great food. We just kind of stumbled upon this place on a Saturday afternoon recently. Fortunately, the staff was very patient with us as we were overwhelmed when choosing what we ordered as everything sounded so delicious. I finally decided on a pork burnt end sandwich and Mom got a basket with fried shrimp and chicken wings...

This place is amazing! I got the Basa dinner with fries and okra. This was the BEST fish I have ever had, and I love going to seafood places. The fish was so clean and the batter was so good. The seasoning and crunch were perfect! The fries were so good too. There was a sauce over the fries and the fish, I think it was melted butter maybe and it was so good...

The food is fire! The staff are pleasant, joyful and kind. Great music! I will recommend this place to anyone who loves seafood. Top notch plates here for superbly reasonable prices. I wanted to post a picture of my food but I ate it all. I had the basa , the cobbler the collards and their phenomenal flavorful gumbo.

Jonathan's was great. I had the lunch shrimp boil and it came with a huge basket of shrimp, potatoes and corn on the cob. The guys working were super friendly and helpful in deciding what to get. Jonathan the owner was around and kept checking on us to see if we needed anything. There are tons of options on the menu. The guys I ate with all had bbq and they said it was great. This is the kind of place I love to support.

I've driven by this place several times, but never stopped in. Wish I had before! They have a good mix of both cajun and bbq. I had the Shrimp boil which came with corn. I also ordered a basket of fried okra. Both were deliscious and the owner was very friendly. I will definitely be coming back in the future. Definitely worth a try!

The fire began along an exterior wall at 2060 Champa St., but damage revealed a long-hidden brick doorway, said bartender and manager Rich Granville, who did not know it existed until he arrived on the scene Monday. A quick response prevented the fire from spreading too much inside the structure, he said.

The bar has an interior security camera but not an outside camera, Granville told The Denver Post, so any footage will likely not be helpful to investigators. He said he was not aware of any threats made against the bar or its staff.

Firefighters used forced entry on the doors, leading to some structural damage. Granville, who plays in the bands Poison Politics and Drink Drink Punk, spent Monday and part of Tuesday retrieving undamaged amplifiers, microphones, cables and other music gear out of a storage room. He said all alcohol stock had been removed from the bar, and that firefighters had boarded up the windows.

Despite being an infamous touring stop for underground acts and a safe space for local punks, the bar never carried a cabaret license until recently. The city requires cabaret licenses for businesses that sell alcohol for on-site consumption but also feature live performances, according to the Department of Excise and Licenses.
