Ok, this turned out to be more of a rant than I anticipated. I've gotten to like iOS quite a bit, especially because the android ecosystem has become a very "worst of both worlds" option. But man the dialer's shit. Someone please tell me I'm missing something obvious.

Instead of searching for a name in the dialer, if you have the contact saved just search them from the home screen. You don't have to open the phone app first and start dialing. Personally the ONLY time I ever actually open the phone app is when I'm dialing a new number, or need to check voicemail

I think you might be operating on a slightly different paradigm. I think the idea behind the dialer interface is that ideally you should almost never use it, it's there for when you need to manually punch in a phone number. Using it for text input is a leftover from the days of dumb- and feature-phones, which couldn't so easily replace your dial pad with a querty keyboard.

On android, if I want to call "James", I open the dialer and type the first letters to "James" and it takes me like 3 seconds. Instead of opening contacts, typing in James on a full size keyboard, filtering through, then choosing which one to dial

Why would you open the number pad to search for text? Contacts is in the same app. Switch over to that tab and search in the same way that you would in the android dialer. Or skip opening the app altogether and search for the contact from your home screen.

Only use the dialer when I've looked up a phone number on my computer or I'm dialing a number from a piece of paper. For my contacts usually there is a text exchange indicating the need for a call I just click their profile pic at the top of the text and click call. Or find them in contacts and call from there. If it's a phone number on a website I've found on my phone just clicking the number will bring you to the dialer with the number input already.

There's a lot more to your iPhone's dialer screen than just entering phone numbers and hitting the green call button. It's not very obvious, but there are secret codes that you can enter on the dialer to find out information about your device, help troubleshoot issues, and mask outgoing calls, to name just a few things.

These hidden dialer codes, including short codes, star codes, pound codes, and service codes, have been around for a while. They are a combination of different technologies and protocols, such as Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD), manufacturer-defined MMI (man-machine interface), and supplementary service (SS) codes. Either the carrier or the manufacturer will program these in.

We've compiled a list of functional dialer codes that you can use on your iPhone and tested almost all of them out, so don't expect to see any fake codes that promise wealth and unlimited power. However, as stated above, some of these codes only work on certain iPhone models or with specific wireless carriers, so your mileage may vary depending on what combination you have.

By default, these types of test alerts are turned off, so you have to opt in using the dialer code above. That's the only way. There's no option in the Settings interface to do so. When opted in, you'll hear a loud alarm-like sound, and the alert will specifically mention it's a test so there's no confusing it with real emergency alerts.

Each cell phone provider has their own directory assistance service with a live operator, and the dialer code to access each one is 411, followed by the call button. If you need help finding the phone number, address, or basic info for a business, this is a good option if you don't like using other apps on your smartphone to do some digging yourself. You can even get movie showtimes, get driving directions, and more.

Each carrier has its own set of dialer codes, aka short codes, that you can use, in addition to all of the ones listed above. Some of these will only work on certain plans, so your mileage may vary. Never hurts to try, though.

If you see any short codes that aren't listed above or don't work for you, please comment below with the code, carrier, and iPhone model. Keep in mind that not all codes will work depending on what plan you have. For instance, generic self-service dialer codes do not work on the Simple Choice Plan with No Credit Check, but they likely will on all other T-Mobile plans.

Note: Users may be able to transfer content via Open-in or Share extensions to unmanaged apps on unenrolled devices or enrolled devices that allow sharing to unmanaged apps. Transferred data is encrypted by Intune and unreadable by unmanaged apps.

  • Policy managed apps with OS sharing: Only allow data transfer to other policy managed apps, as well as file transfers to other MDM managed apps on enrolled devices. Note: The Policy managed apps with OS sharing value is applicable to MDM enrolled devices only. If this setting is targeted to a user on an unenrolled device, the behavior of the Policy managed apps value applies. Users will be able to transfer unencrypted content via Open-in or Share extensions to any application allowed by the iOS MDM allowOpenFromManagedtoUnmanaged setting, assuming the sending app has the IntuneMAMUPN and IntuneMAMOID configured; for more information, see How to manage data transfer between iOS apps in Microsoft Intune. See -Profile-Reference.pdf for more information on this iOS/iPadOS MDM setting.
  • Policy managed apps with Open-In/Share filtering: Allow transfer only to other policy managed apps, and filter OS Open-in/Share dialogs to only display policy managed apps. To configure the filtering of the Open-In/Share dialog, it requires both the app(s) acting as the file/document source and the app(s) that can open this file/document to have the Intune SDK for iOS version 8.1.1 or above. Note: Users may be able to transfer content via Open-in or Share extensions to unmanaged apps if Intune private data type is supported by the app. Transferred data is encrypted by Intune and unreadable by unmanaged apps.

Spotlight search (enables searching data within apps) and Siri shortcuts are blocked unless set to All apps. This policy can also apply to iOS/iPadOS Universal Links. General web links are managed by the Open app links in Intune Managed Browser policy setting. There are some exempt apps and services to which Intune may allow data transfer by default. In addition, you can create your own exemptions if you need to allow data to transfer to an app that doesn't support Intune APP. See data transfer exemptions for more information. All apps

Transfer telecommunication data toTypically, when a user selects a hyperlinked phone number in an app, a dialer app will open with the phone number prepopulated and ready to call. For this setting, choose how to handle this type of content transfer when it is initiated from a policy-managed app:
                • None, do not transfer this data between apps: Don't transfer communication data when a phone number is detected.
                • A specific dialer app: Allow a specific dialer app to initiate contact when a phone number is detected.
                • Any dialer app: Allow any dialer app to be used to initiate contact when a phone number is detected.
Note: This setting requires Intune SDK 12.7.0 and later. If your apps rely on dialer functionality and aren't using the correct Intune SDK version, as a workaround, consider adding "tel;telprompt" as a data transfer exemption. Once the apps support the correct Intune SDK version, the exemption can be removed.Any dialer app
Dialer App URL SchemeWhen a specific dialer app has been selected, you must provide the dialer app URL scheme that is used to launch the dialer app on iOS devices. • All apps with incoming Org data: Allow data transfer from any app. Treat all incoming data without a user identity as data from your organization. The data will be marked with the MDM enrolled user's identity as defined by the IntuneMAMUPN setting.Note: The All apps with incoming Org data value is applicable to MDM enrolled devices only. If this setting is targeted to a user on an unenrolled device, the behavior of the Any apps value applies.
Multi-identity MAM enabled applications will attempt to switch to an unmanaged account when receiving unmanaged data if this setting is configured to None or Policy managed apps. If there's no unmanaged account signed into the app or the app is unable to switch, the incoming data will be blocked.
