Itshows the components of an object slightly separated by distance, or suspended in surrounding space in the case of a three-dimensional exploded diagram. An object is represented as if there had been a small controlled explosion emanating from the middle of the object, causing the object's parts to be separated an equal distance away from their original locations.
The projection of an exploded view is usually shown from above and slightly in diagonal from the left or right side of the drawing. (See exploded-view drawing of a gear pump to the right: it is slightly from above and shown from the left side of the drawing in diagonal.)
An exploded-view drawing is a type of drawing, that shows the intended assembly of mechanical or other parts. It shows all parts of the assembly and how they fit together. In mechanical systems usually the component closest to the center are assembled first, or is the main part in which the other parts get assembled. This drawing can also help to represent the disassembly of parts, where the parts on the outside normally get removed first.[2]
Exploded diagrams are common in descriptive manuals showing parts placement, or parts contained in an assembly or sub-assembly. Usually such diagrams have the part identification number and a label indicating which part fills the particular position in the diagram. Many spreadsheet applications can automatically create exploded diagrams, such as exploded pie charts.
In patent drawings in an exploded views the separated parts should be embraced by a bracket, to show the relationship or order of assembly of various parts are permissible, see image. When an exploded view is shown in a figure that is on the same sheet as another figure, the exploded view should be placed in brackets.[1]
Exploded views can also be used in architectural drawing, for example in the presentation of landscape design. An exploded view can create an image in which the elements are flying through the air above the architectural plan, almost like a cubist painting. The locations can be shadowed or dotted in the siteplan of the elements.[3]
One of the first clearer examples of an exploded view was created by Leonardo in his design drawing of a reciprocating motion machine. Leonardo applied this method of presentation in several other studies, including those on human anatomy.[5]
The term "Exploded-View Drawing" emerged in the 1940s, and is one of the first times defined in 1965 as "Three-dimensional (isometric) illustration that shows the mating relationships of parts, subassemblies, and higher assemblies. May also show the sequence of assembling or disassembling the detail parts."[6]
I have a drawing that I made a while ago. It is an exploded view of an assembly. I was careful to explode the part so that I could use the axis of the holes to show how the parts assemble. Basically, I showed the axis and stretched it so that it connected the two parts. I could not find a way to show an explode line.
However, now we have upgraded to Creo parametric 1.0 and I can not figure out how to show the axis in an exploded view. I tried show model annotations and that didn't help. I used the search to try and find 'show/erase' which is what I think I used in the past.
You can definitely still "Show" the axis. You can also use the Drawing Tree to find the view, expand the Annotations group, find the axis and right-click to show/erase/unerase. But rather than get into the ways to show the axis, you really just need Explode Lines.
You can easily make explode lines using axes or surfaces in Creo. Edit your Exploded View as if you were going to change the location of components by selecting Edit Position. From the dashboard, select the Explode Lines tab as shown below (or the little magic wand with the yellow star on top of it)
Be careful to select Axes as your references and you'll be able to easily create explode lines like the ones shown below (light blue dashed lines). Extending the axes to create this effect is definitely not the way to go. Those longer axes will clutter your models and eventually cause headaches.
Thank you for the help. I am happy to now know how to add the explode lines in. This is definetely the correct way to do this. I am not sure how I missed that tab when I did these drawings a long time ago.
I am trying to export an exploded view out of Creo Parametric 7.0 into Creo View format but for whatever reason it will not create the exploded state. I have tried doing the export from Creo Parametric when the model is in both the exploded and unexploded states and I have tried opening the model with both Creo View Lite 4.1 and Creo View Standard (I believe it was 4.0). No matter what I try the model I see in Creo View is always the unexploded state and the "Preset Explode" button is greyed out.
What you have created is an All State (aka Combined State / View State) referring an Explode. This All State is converted as View State in Creo View and shall be available under Viewables tab (next to model tree in primary panel).
So when you save as PVZ from Creo parametric make sure your recipe file \Common Files\text\prodview\export_pvs.rcp has recipe option "adapter/outputAuthorState=1". Refer similar article captured for simplified representations.
Try going to View Manager in Creo and creating a combination state view in the "all" tab. You will find these combination states in the viewables tab in Creo View after publishing. This is the base of how "MBD" or model based definition works...the advanced companies have predefined combination states in their start parts.
Can you attach screenshots here of how you have the combination state defined and then how that combination view looks in Creo View when you open the "explode" combination state in Creo View. What is grayed out...need a picture of what you are looking at..is this in creo view, creo parametric, the publish configuration, view manager?
Exactly...this is why pictures are important. All you need to do is go to the Viewables tab in the creo view model tree, select "Explode-All" in the list and it should open into the view with the items exploded. However, I don't know why the Explode option in the view content area doesn't work.
Just wondering if there is a way to quickly crate an exploded view of a model (like you would get with Lego instructions etc.) without having to select items and move them by a set amount on various axis.

On a more serious side: you can review the assembly manuals and get a fairly comprehensive understanding of terminology. Parts are shown reasonable clearly, and names used in close enough association you generally can figure out what is being referred to.
Best would be consulting manual and assembly guide. If you have purchased Prusa printer, log into the account you have purchased it under, and go to shop. There you will see spare parts for your printer and they have their exact names.
Exploded views that look good are incredibly difficult to automate in 3D. If you look at the example @DaveR posted earlier in this topic, you will see a lot of aspects that required artistic judgement. For example, some parts are left as assemblies when similar ones elsewhere already show the idea. Some parts are displaced horizontally either in x or in y whereas others are displaced vertically. The distance the parts are moved is chosen so important things are not obscured by others but it is still evident how they fit together. The viewing angle is chosen for the same reason. And all of this will vary depending on the details of model contents!

Does this mean isolating the elements in model view that you would like to see move their position on the axonometric drawing and saving them as 3D views. And then compositing these 3D views in a layout that you achieve the "explosion" effect (moving elements up, down or sideways from their actual position)?
I have created a 3D document from an axonometric drawing as the basis for isolating different elements and saving them as views for compositing. What is the best way to isolate elements in this 3D document. Only with turning off layers or is it possible to isolate selected elements like the F4 button does for perspective? Is there a similar way to do this for the 3D document?
