Im watching the Conan detective anime on tubi and noticed the series is on episode fucking 970 something and jimmy is still a kid. I watched the show when it was dubbed on Adult Swim, so I've missed any plot progressions that happened since then.

They develop on the main plot every once in a while, but I'm pretty sure the series these days is mostly fueled by the author's love for writing random mysteries. And also several companies liking the fact that it's a marketable, formulaic series. Like there's almost always a new Detective Conan movie every year on Golden Week. And they always do well in the domestic box office.
