Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that ensures a student's desktop can only access a Canvas Quiz. It is based on the same system components and settings that make up Internet Explorer (Windows) and Safari (Mac) browsers already installed on computers. Respondus LockDown Browser is both Windows and Macintosh compatible.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a locked browser that prevents you from printing, copying, going to another page, or using outside tools during a Canvas quiz activity. Your instructor may have elected to use Respondus LockDown Browser enabled quizzes in Canvas, which require students to download and install a special browser prior to taking the quiz. LockDown enabled quizzes will not allow you to take the quiz on a standard browser.

Each institution's LockDown Browser application is unique to that institution. If you already have Respondus LockDown Browser installed on you computer via a non-Yale Canvas course, you will be unable to use it for any Canvas @ Yale course. You may have more than one instance of the browser installed. If this is the case, make sure you select the correct one for your Canvas @ Yale course

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment for a Canvas Quiz item. Students are unable to copy, print, access other applications, or visit other websites during an online exam.

Assignments are, in many (or most for us) cases, something students visit once, get instructions, then go off and do work in something like word/excel/powerpoint/google docs and when they are done, come back and submit. A student may work on assignments for days or even weeks depending on the course. Lockdown browser just doesn't make sense in that kind of workflow. There are some assignment workflows where lockdown browser might make sense, but I think it would really create more issues and confusion in general.

Lockdown Browser is a bit more suited to quizzes because they are in general something students do right in Canvas, and start/complete in one sitting. Usually no external programs, usually no coming back to finish days later... That's where Lockdown Browser makes the most sense, as least in my opinion. The issue with adding annotations to quizzes is that I believe those are done through DocViewer, and usually docviewer is set up to more or less fill the entire browser, and I'm not sure it even supports being loaded twice (if you had 2 annotation questions in the same quiz). This is not insurmountable (perhaps force the one question at a time setting if annotations are used), but it would definitely add complexity to the code. When the idea conversations area reopens, you could definitely submit this as an idea to see what others and Instructure would think about it.

To do math (say differential equations or linear algebra), students need to write. There is no quiz form that allows writing on a document. However, in an annotation assignment, one can load a multipage pdf (for example), and then students can write all over it. So they can do a test in electron form. No need for multiple documents. No need to upload, download, or leave the browser. Thus, it would be helpful for that thing to either (a) appear as a quiz type, or (b) be lockable as an assignment. There's really no reason to not make assignments lockable.

I do understand what you're asking for, and agree for your scenario it makes complete sense. Even though it seems like a simple thing for this scenario, I was pointing out that there are a lot of other things that would have to be considered to make this a reality. Adding the functionality into quizzes may be challenging because of how docviewer usually works. Adding lockdown to assignments could be challenging because of all the various assignment types there are.

When you are ready to take your test, close all applications on your computer and open the newly downloaded software. Do not open any other browser to access the internet. Use Respondus LockDown Browser to access the internet.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom web browser that is used to access quizzes in Canvas. When the LockDown Browser is enabled, students are prevented from opening additional tabs, accessing other applications on their computer, and taking specific actions while on the quiz (e.g. taking screenshots, copying, printing).

In order to take a Quiz that requires the use of Respondus, you must download the LockDown Browser before you can begin the exam. The Canvas quiz will prompt you to download the LockDown Browser if you attempt to take it from any other browser.

LockDown Browser is a client application that is installed on a local computer. Both the Windows edition and the Mac edition of the browser are based on Chromium, Google's open-source framework. Students do NOT need Google's Chrome browser installed; nor will this version affect a Chrome browser that's already installed.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. Important Note: Respondus LockDown Browser will prompt you to update whenever there is an update available. You can always verify that you are running the latest version by clicking the "Information" button on the toolbar at the top of the browser.

The Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom web-browser that can help secure test-taking. When students use the LockDown Browser to access a Canvas Quiz, they are unable to print, copy-and-paste, visit other websites, access other applications, or close a quiz until it is submitted for grading. Quizzes created for use with the LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with standard browsers.

Remember that students will need to download and install the LockDown Browser on their computer or device. If they do this at the start of a test, it often causes delays and cuts into necessary test-taking time. For that reason, instructors need to schedule a practice-test using LockDown Browser before hand and remind students to not delete the browser afterwards.

The Respondus LockDown Browser works with Canvas on Windows, Mac, Chromebook and iOS (when specifically enabled by the instructor). Instructors can set up the LockDown Browser directly within Canvas. When students click on the Canvas Quiz link to start a quiz, the LockDown Browser will open automatically, then the quiz will display within the LockDown Browser rather than in the original browser. LockDown Browser works with both Classic and New Quizzes.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a locked browser used specifically for taking online quizzes in Cougar Courses (Canvas). It prevents students from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications (like Word) during a quiz. If a quiz requires that LockDown Browser be used, students will not be able to take the quiz with a standard web browser. There is also the additional option of Respondus Monitor, which uses a student's webcam to record them while they take the quiz. These videos are then viewable by the instructor through the Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard. Automated video analysis automatically flags any suspicious behavior in these videos and prioritizes them for review.

Faculty have the option of applying the Respondus LockDown Browser to assessments given in Canvas. When the LockDown Browser is applied, students will be unable to print, capture screen content, go to URL's or access other applications while taking assessments. Students will need to download and install the LockDown browser onto your device in order to access assessments that use the LockDown Browser. Once installed, you will use this application to login to Canvas whenever you take an assessment that uses the LockDown Browser. Once it is installed, you do not have to install it again for a different assessment, even if it is in a different course.

If you have a Mac, click on Do you need the Mac Version? then click Install Now. If you have a Windows device, click Install Now. If having problems downloading to a Mac, use the Chrome browser to download.

The Respondus LockDown Browser (RLDB) is a locked browser that prevents students from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment. When the RLDB is enabled for a quiz, students will be required to download and use RLDB to take the quiz or exam. Watch an overview video on LockDown Browser.

We recommend compressing your images so that they are small files and can therefore be loaded quicker even with lower bandwidth internet connection. See this wiki on possible methods of compressing your images.Change Canvas Quiz Settings to show one question at time Canvas Quizzes show every question on a scrolling page by default which makes the web browser load all the images and may take a while. If instructors have a lot of images, they can change the quiz settings so that questions display one at time.

LockDown Browser (LDB) is a completely separate browser not a plug in. After downloading the LDB, the student needs to open the LockDown Browser software (found in applications) and access the exam through that browser. If the student is getting a message saying to download LDB, then they are still accessing the exam through a normal browser like Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari.
