To obtain the OpenVPN Connect app, go to the Google Play Store on your Android device, or open the link below to the Google Play Store. On the Google Play Store on your device, look for the words "openvpn connect" and the application will show up in the search results. You can install it from there. Once installed an icon will be placed on your home screen where you can find the app. Once you have it open you can use the Access Server option to start the import process. You can use the option to import directly from the web interface of the Access Server or use the import from file option. If you use the web interface import option you need to enter the address of your Access Server's web interface here, along with username and password. If your server is on an unusual port (not the default HTTPS port TCP 443), specify the port here. Once the import has completed, you are ready to use the app.

Is this android app can be used with OpenVPN community edition as well? If not, whats the community edition android apps name and where shall I download it? Google-play or F-Droid? Could you leave the link in the comments, please?

If you are using the OpenVPN for Android app then if you recreate a profile but uncheck the store certificate in android certificate store checkbox then when you try to start the openvpn profile on the phone you will get a request for the password. If your password is correct then that will start the openvpn profile up. I checked that with my android 11 phone and I was able to get it to work.

I would also suggest creating a new client connection with a simple password of on ly letters and numbers and no special characters just in case the android certificate store in android 13 has had some password restrictions applied to it.

The problem is not with IPFire but with your phone manufacturers tailored version of Android 13. They look to have decided to not update the android certificate store to be able to recognise and manage the more secure Openssl3 certificates and it only works with the less secure legacy certificates.

Hi, I have a working OpenVPN setup but what is not working on the Android M client is to have it receive and use the DNS IP Address from the server. It simply isn't being pushed despite the presence of "list push 'dhcp-option DNS 10.8.0.1'" in the openvpn config file. The Android client instead uses the Google DNS servers which is an option inside the connection app. Is there a way to have the Android client use the router's DNS server? I'm hoping it isn't necessary to try building up and down scripts simply to have DNS pushed. Thanks in advance for anything that can be shared toward solving this.

If you also have these 2 lines below in your /etc/config/openvpn file then the Android device will receive and use the upstream DNS servers you have defined in the WAN, change the DNS IP below to whatever your router's IP is:
list push 'redirect-gateway def1'
list push 'dhcp-option DNS 192.168.1.1'

I just installed the "new" openmediavault-openvpn plugin (was previously using openvpnas) and I've succesfully configured it and made it work on my personal Android device but not on my Windows laptop.

a @Pollux says, that's routing problem. If the openvpn-gui doesn't have the rights it won't pull the appropriate routes to windows.
Also make sure you're using different clients keys/certificates, otherwise you'll run into trouble if you connect simultaneously.

Default gateway (aka the redirect gateway def1 flag) forwards all client traffic through the vpn service (useful for hiding your internet traffic, bypassing firewall and dns blocks). You may wanna look at the whole openvpn documentation, properly explained here.

hello i am having the opposite windows clients connect fine and can browse, on my android the vpn shows connected and shows the public ip of my internet service at home but when i try to browse the web it times out? I also used different certs one for my phone and one for pc.

I have set up the router according to the instructions and then installed openvpn on my android phone. After installing the app and then the configuration file I tried to connect but without success. I have the log of what happened but am unable to include it as I am told it contains illegal external links.

I am running an openvpn server with open key infrastructure at home that I connect to whenever I'm away. I am at the moment running this via the official openvpn client app, but found that there is a vpn setting in the system settings. Are there any advantages with one over the other, or could I just get rid of the extra app and go with the "native" option?

Your users can make an SSL VPN connection to the Firebox with an OpenVPN client. For example, users can install OpenVPN Connect for Android or iOS, which is available from openvpn.net, the Google Play app store, or the Apple app store.

This article assumes you have basic understanding of server-authentication, certificates, keys, and the fundamentals of OpenVPN. It also assumes the appropriate private and public certificate (*.crt), key (.*key), and Diffie-Hellman (dh2048.pem) files, as well as the OpenVPN configuration file (*.ovpn) are correctly generated. For more details on generating these files, visit -to-set-up-an-openvpn-server-on-ubuntu-16-04.

Regarding the settings on the Android device - I generally dislike the idea of having to navigate complex configuration dialogs in an android app. Fortunately 'OpenVPN Connect' supports importing the settings, keys and certificate from a single .ovpn profile file ('OpenVPN for Android' supports this, too, it seems). With that you can even include the certificates and keys inline.

I'm using an Ubuntu Server and I wanted to use OpenVpn for my server and my android phone. I installed OpenVpn connect for my phone and the software needs *.ovpn file from my server. How can I generate this file? And how can I enable authentication? I've use OpenVpn Access Server but it gives only two users licensee to authenticate but I need more. I've searched through internet but all training I've found was how to generate client.key , client.crt and ca.crt but I can't use them for my android phone.

I've been looking to get a decent "native" VPN setup on my android phone for a while. There doesn't seem to be native support for IPSEC VPNs terminating on Cisco routers. Long request topic for it [here] although ASA8.4(1) supposedly has support I haven't had a chance to test it yet.

For the most part it worked perfectly but I added a couple of extra lines to the server config below. I found it useful to run the server via sudo openvpn --config server.conf --script-security 2 when I was doing the initial testing.
