Inquiry on Coupling Mechanics+Thermal+Flow for Oil-Water Two-Phase Systems in MRST

Hi

I’m currently working on a coupled mechanics-thermal-flow simulation using the discrete fracture model (DFM). My preliminary approach involves:

  • Implicit solution for flow and mechanics, coupled via the fixed-stress split method.
  • At this stage, I’ve successfully implemented the mechanics-flow coupling.
From my understanding, MRST’s geothermal module focuses on single-phase water or two-component (water-NaCl) systems. My project, however, requires modeling oil-water two-phase flow in a poro-thermo-elastic framework. Could you kindly advise:
    1. goog_1634048539Does MRST currently include modules for two-phase (oil-water) coupled problems with thermal effects?
    2. If not, are there existing examples or best practices (e.g., in ad-mech, or other modules) that I could adapt for this purpose?

Any guidance on extending the current functionality or references to relevant literature would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Mr. ZHOU,

The geothermal module currently only includes one-phase simulation.  There are no other modules in MRST that cover multi-phase with thermal simulation.

The ad-mechanics module can be useful to see how different models can be coupled together, but as the name suggests it focuses on the coupling of mechanics with multiphase flow.

We do have support for multi-phase simulation with thermal in our sister software project JutulDarcy, though you might perhaps be reluctant to switch framework at this point.
