J Franklin "Frank" McCormick
1935 - 2026
Dr. J Franklin "Frank" McCormick passed peacefully at home in Ft. Collins, CO on May 22, 2026 in the care of Bristol Hospice. Frank was born on October 25, 1935 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of Earl Franklin McCormick and Izora (McIntire) McCormick Pease. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Col. David Earl McCormick; his beloved wife of almost 50 years, Deanna June (Bixby) McCormick, in 2024; and a granddaughter, Julia Clark McCormick.
A graduate of Butler Univ. and Emory Univ., Frank was a professor of ecology, specializing in sustainable development. He was on the faculty of Vanderbilt, Univ. of Georgia-SREL (Savannah River Ecology Laboratory), the Univ. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and for many years at the Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville. For a decade while at UT, he was the Director of the Program of the first in the nation PhD-granting graduate program in ecology. Also at UT, he established the "Institute for International Training in Environmental Impact Assessment and Sustainable Development." He served on the National Academy of Sciences (NAS)-National Research Council (NRC), and was appointed Senior Ecologist of the Department of the Interior in the administration of President Jimmy Carter. Frank also taught a master's degree program on environmental impact assessment at the Federal University of Amazonas, Manaus (UA) in Brazil. Brazil became important in both his professional and personal life, when he later established an eco-tourism company in the Amazon rainforest. Besides his life's work, Frank's passion was fishing: from pursuing peacock bass on the Rio Negro in Brazil, salmon in Aniak, Alaska, mahi-mahi in Mexico (where he and Deanna enjoyed spending time with family and friends), bass on Lake Barnum, Minnesota (where they had a cabin), to fly-fishing for trout in the mountains of Colorado, he could often be found with a rod in his hands.
Frank is survived by his sister, Peggy (McCormick) Buck, several nieces and a nephew; three children with his first wife, Laura McCormick-Clark (Richard Clark), Michael (Jami) McCormick, Jeff (Rachel) McCormick; two step-daughters, Michelle Richardson (Tom Munsey) and Carmen (Chris) D'Aluisio; and four grandchildren, Travis, Chloe (Jared Lords), Grayson, and Gavin McCormick.
In keeping with his dedication to the sciences, Frank donated his body to Science Care in order to advance medical research and education. Following the completion of the research program, his cremains will be returned to the family for a private scattering. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no memorial service. His family would like to express our deep gratitude to the staff of MacKenzie Place assisted living for their excellent care and welcoming community, and to Bristol Hospice for their support and compassion.

In Memory of Dr. J. Franklin “Frank” McCormick
On May 22, 2026, Sino-ECO members and friends lost one of our dearest friends, mentors, and professors, Dr. J. Franklin “Frank” McCormick. We mourn his passing with deep sorrow and profound gratitude.
Frank was one of the earliest and most important advisors in the establishment of Sino-ECO, together with Dr. Orie L. Loucks and Dr. Dennis H. Knight. With his vision, encouragement, and the generous support of many distinguished professors, Sino-ECO members have continued to grow and thrive in the fields of ecological education and research.
Frank’s wisdom, kindness, and lifelong dedication to ecology inspired generations of students, colleagues, and friends. His contributions to Sino-ECO and to the broader ecological community will be remembered with lasting respect and affection.
Frank will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
