Here is what I did when I installed Soulstorm on PlayOnLinux:
a. If output of wine --version is NOT wine-6.0, then do steps 1 & 2 here: NET Framework 4.5.2 - #5 by carmar
b. Install playonlinux using Synaptic.
c. Steps on playonlinux are easy - all buttons & no terminal commands:
i. Click Install button
ii. Click Next 4 times
iii. Enter name of a virtual drive - make up a name
iv. Click Next 2 times
v. Choose either 32 bit or 64 bit - if after installation, the game doesn't work on 32 bit, then try 64 bit and reinstall and try again.
vi. Browse to game installation .exe file and click Ok. The .exe will run just like on Windows and MAKE NOTE OF THE INSTALLATION PATH.
vii. Wait for the .exe to finish running - just like on Windows. Make sure you have unchecked any options to run the game at the end of the install. Some GOG installers tend to have this option.
viii. After the installer is done, the system returns you to the PlayOnLinux menu which asks you if you want to create a shortcut. Select the Browse option (2nd option) on that list and browse to the game executable using Home -> PlayOnLinux's Virtual Drives -> Name you gave the Virtual Drive in step iii -> drive_c -> your game installation folder based on step vi.
ix. PlayOnLinux will create a shortcut on your desktop which you can then double-click to launch your game.

DOW shouldn't give an access violation. If it does then reinstall Wine - POL is just a front-end, the problem lies with how Wine is installed. I've played Soulstorm, DOW II, Gothic Armada, using POL - no problems with any of them either on install or when running them.

I installed wine with Play on Linux and
tried to install Winband with the help of Synaptic Package Manager
Tried also to install Winband using the Command line with the instruction sudo apt-get install winbind
If I go to the Software Centre and I search for Winband I don t find it.
If you need aditional information, please let me know.
Thank you in advance for your help.

There's a winbind in synaptics;
Samba is an implementation of the SMB/CIFS protocol for Unix systems,
providing support for cross-platform file sharing with Microsoft Windows, OS X,
and other Unix systems. Samba can also function as a domain controller
or member server in both NT4-style and Active Directory domains.

after reinstalling wine and play on linux and trying to install office 2010, I received the following error message
Error in FS_Check
The following file is located on a FAT32 filesystem.
It might prevent wine from working

sprintf with "%s" format specifier expects a char* argument. getIntsFromFile() on the other hand returns an std::string. The behavior is undefined (which in your case you can observe as an access violation) in case the argument type does not match the expected type .

Hello,

So, I've installed Gothic II Gold with NoTR and then followed the instructions given in the mod .rar file. The game starts perfectly and with all the cutscenes (I've completed vanilla Gothic several times). However, when I press New Game, it goes to the loading screen and after loading about 2/3 of the way it suddenly takes me to the desktop following an Access Violation message, what should I do?

playLogoVideos=0 trying this setting in the gothic.ini is the only thing that comes to mind (if i remember correctly this disables all the cutscenes of the game so it might skip a cutscene thats causing the crash) that is if the start game cutscene is the problem

hello
same problem here posting in hopes of a solution ((play logovideos=0 doesnt work, good thinking though, disabling all other cutscenes as well doesnt change the violation either))
in another thread was suggested to turn off g sync in nvidia control panel you could try that Raudonas.
....i dont even have the g sync option tweaking around with other settings like shutting off v sync and in game settings doesnt seem to work either

Edit: uh... try going to the system folder and launch ast.exe
works perfectly and im an idiot.

you give me too much credit sir xD the op did mention shortly that the ast.exe is the way to go but i guess its easily overlooked .
on another note if you get lags and short freezes mid gameplay in khorinis there is a solution for that as well, though its not too terribly bothersome unless you're fighting ((warehouse guard < ice lance)). what does bother me is the food/drink timer seems a little harsh at first as if you are at war with time- buuuuut you do eventually get used to it. the one bug that has me locked in place right now is the x in the cave greg takes you too,the digging animation doesnt really end and nothing happens you can leave the animation but as you cant dig out the leather satchel greg doesnt change armors and you can guess what that all means.
I did see someone mention the same bug somewhere but if memory serves its not solved yet
p.s in advance from what i figure you need to find an alternate route to VoM else it crashes.

My issue is same, was not able to start a new game at all. Loading screen goes to like 70%, the movie(g2intro) plays well and if I press ESC to skip the movie (or even if I wait it out) it crashes with access violation error right after. G-Sync is disabled and I can't figure out what to do anymore. I have counted at least 35 reinstalls of the game and requiem mod.

Edit: Almost gave up but decided to re-read everything again. Turns out it was Data Execution Prevention that was on for the game.. Hope this will shed some light on anyone else coming up with the problem. Turn off DEP here

The problem that the "Symptoms" section describes was corrected in Windows Update Agent 3.0 and in update 927891. These updates were distributed through Microsoft Update in June and July, 2007. If you are still experiencing a problem that resembles the one that this article describes, it may be a different problem. To troubleshoot similar problems, please see the "Similar problems and resolutions" section later in this article.

You receive an access violation error in the Svchost.exe process. This process is related to the Automatic Updates service. This access violation occurs when you use Automatic Updates to scan for updates by using the daily automatic schedule or when you visit the Microsoft Update Web site to manually scan for updates.

To get the stand-alone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

Microsoft has released a Microsoft Security Advisory on this problem for IT professionals. The security advisory contains additional security-related information about this problem. To view the security advisory, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

This article discusses the MSI component fixes only. This fix is one component of a two-part fix that includes a Windows Update client software update. These updates will be deployed automatically by using Windows Update in May 2007 and June 2007. However, some customers may select to manually install these updates. To fully address the unresponsive system issue, both this fix for MSI must be installed and the Windows Update client must be updated to version 3.0. When you install the MSI fix and the new client, process-monitoring tools may still show CPU usage at near 100 percent. However, the system should still be responsive and should not lock up. If another task requires CPU cycles, they will be shared. However, if the system is idle, MSI will use the full cycles that are available to complete in the shortest time. If another task is running at the same time as MSI, the system may run slightly more slowly. However, the computer should still be responsive. Remember that you must install the MSI fix and the new client to address unresponsive or locked systems. It is expected that process-monitoring tools may still show CPU usage at near 100 percent, but computer unresponsiveness is expected. If you watch the process monitor, you may still see CPU usage at near 100 percent during some scans if the computer is otherwise idle. This is expected behavior.

Important Many instances of the Svchost.exe process may be running on a Windows-based computer. These Svchost.exe processes control certain tasks. The software update that is described in this article is only designed to address the problem that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. Other problems that you experience with Svchost.exe may require alternative resolutions or troubleshooting steps.

To resolve this problem, you must install this update together with the Windows Update Automatic Client 3.0. The Windows Update Automatic Client 3.0 will automatically be released through Automatic Updates by June 30, 2007. The updated Windows Client changes the thread modeling to move MSI scans to a thread that is separate from the user interface.

For the MSI update, install one of the following updates based on the version of Windows that is installed. To determine the version of Windows that is installed, follow these steps:
