Servicelearning differs from community service, internships, or field study experiences because the service activity is connected to the course learning goals through reflection and critical analysis, and seeks to balance the benefits to the student with benefits to the community partners and the public good.

The OSL encourages community-engaged teaching and research through expanded faculty development. We offer workshops, consultations and grants, organize the annual service-learning fellows program, and present awards to faculty for their work in service-learning instruction and research.

The OSL develops community-university partnerships for service-learning projects and placements. Some of our partnerships include Experience UGA, Engage GA, the AmeriCorps VISTA Network, and the AmeriCorps Community Food Fellows.

The OSL supports student programs and opportunities for service-learning and experiential learning. These opportunities include becoming an Experience UGA Ambassador, joining Campus Kitchen, and applying to be a PSO Student Scholar. We are also starting a new youth sports and literacy tutoring program.

The OSL measures the impact of service-learning through scholarship, assessment and institutional tracking. This includes our service-learning course surveys and publishing the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement (JHEOE).

When you support Service-Learning at the University of Georgia with a one-time or recurring donation, you help students become involved with the community in ways that benefit their education, allow them to make real-world connections between academics and community.

The Office of Service Learning was founded in January of 1995 to support community engaged coursework and experiential learning campus-wide. We maintain partnerships with 300 non-profit organizations and 150 government offices, and engage in global service study abroad activities in 7 developing nations.

The OSL offers many high-impact experiential learning opportunities to students at the University of Missouri, including curriculum-based community engagement, internships, and global service study abroad.

"Public service is a calling, and it's up to us to inspire communities across New York to answer the call," Governor Hochul said. "With Lieutenant Governor Delgado overseeing our new Office of Service and Civic Engagement, we will train and identify the next generation of local leaders and public servants who can help their communities grow and thrive."

Participating college students will commit to perform necessary community service work for 300 hours a year, such as tutoring in high-need K-12 schools, distributing meals to those facing food insecurity, and taking climate action.

In line with this initiative, the City University of New York will seek to enhance its paid internships with non-profits in the New York City area to students seeking to gain invaluable workplace experience while in service with their communities.

OVS provides substantial financial relief to eligible crime victims and their families. The agency pays medical and dental bills; counseling costs; funeral and burial expenses; crime scene clean-up cost; lost wages and support, among other assistance. New York is the only state in the country with no limit on reimbursement for medical bills or counseling, which means individuals receive help for as long as they need it.

To further the rights, interests and support of crime victims, OVS funds a network of victim assistance programs providing direct services, such as counseling, legal help, emergency shelter for domestic violence victims, across the state. Crime victim advocates meet men, women and children in crisis, help them navigate the criminal justice process and work to ensure their rights are protected and their voices heard.

OVS facilitates communication and coordination with other federal, state, and local governmental agencies and victim advocacy organizations. The agency also supports victim service professionals, providing training and resources that allows them to enhance their skills and resources that emphasize the importance of caring for themselves. While advocacy work is extremely rewarding, it also can be stressful and challenging.

The UAB Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research connects students, faculty, and community nonprofit partners to enrich student academic learning, promote civic engagement, and to strengthen and support our local and global communities.

STUDENTS Getting involved beyond campus and participating in research projects will help you to build a stronger connection to the community while also gaining valuable skills that can help you find a job after you graduate.

Proactively exploring service, research activities, and experiences available to students will serve as a catalyst to helping them gain a greater understanding of how areas of study are applicable beyond the classroom.

Service-learning is an educational experience that meets community needs and achieves disciplinary course goals. It is characterized by intentional reflection that enables students to link course content with the service activity. At its heart, service-learning is a form of mutually beneficial experiential learning.
