Everyone is invited to an employee, users and public celebration this Friday to welcome the Muon g-2 particle storage ring to Fermilab.
The 50-foot-wide electromagnet has spent the past month traveling over land and water from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York and will arrive here on Friday. The truck carrying the magnet will be parked on Eola Road between Batavia Road and Road A on Friday, and employees and users are asked to keep clear of the area (that portion of Eola Road will be closed all day).
At approximately 5 p.m. the ring will begin moving north on Eola Road to Road A on its way to Wilson Hall. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., there will be an employee and public event in Wilson Hall, which will feature hands-on exhibits for families, while Fermilab scientists answer questions. The 15th floor will also be open to the public. The cafeteria will remain open for dinner until 7 p.m.
The ring is scheduled to arrive at Wilson Hall at 6:30 p.m., and employees, users and the public will be invited outside to greet it. After it makes its way down Road A and turns onto Kautz Road, the ring will pause, and everyone can participate in a group photo in front of the truck.
Parking will be restricted along both sides of the reflecting pond, around the horseshoe in front of Wilson Hall, and along Kautz Road to the Kidney Pond lot all day on Friday. Additionally, parking will be restricted after 4 p.m. in the Kidney Pond lot and certain spaces to the east and west of Wilson Hall. Please follow the signs that will be posted. Vehicles parked in restricted areas will be towed (the site map can be viewed here: http://www.fnal.gov/pub/today/archive/archive_2013/images/ring-move-map.jpg).
This is a very exciting event for the laboratory, and we expect a lot of public attendance and additional on-site traffic. If you do not plan to stay for the celebration, please consider leaving the Fermilab site by 4:30 p.m. If that is not possible, make sure your vehicle is not parked in a restricted area.
Friday’s celebration will be a fitting welcome for the Muon g-2 ring, one of the centerpieces of Fermilab’s future program. I hope you can join us.
If you have any questions about the event, please call the Office of Communication at x3351.
