you'd be better off using pcsxr over epsxe. epsxe is dead and the linux version is outdated, pcsxr is being actively maintained and improved. it may not be as fast as epsxe but if i'm not mistaken it's more compatible and it's open source, which is a huge plus.

here is a modified PKGBUILD of the one found in AUR that will build the latest version available. please note that although i've left the option to build the opengl plugin enabled i would advise against using it as it's simply crap, especially compared to the actively maintained xvideo plugin. it may have some nice and fancy features but it's just not worth using at all..

Hmm, I think this means you have a 64bit system but epsxe is 32bit. You'll need to cross-compile then. Or use my libspuPeopsALSA.so.1.0.9:
Or download enetrnalspu manually and put in in the plugins folder.

@e_tank: I actually tried pcsxr but as it turns out it just froze before it enters and opening cutscene in the game, I think it's because of some graphic problem. Myabe it was because it use xvideo rather than openGL. I'll try to use your package build then.

pSx renders in the original resolution (which is sometimes 320x240 - no I'm not kidding with that) and then just scales that up if you resize the window. ePSXe renders in the actual resolution you set up in the plugin settings. So the difference you see rendering in 320x240 compared to rendering in 1024x768 (or whatever you've set).

Just in case anyone is interested, I created an AUR package for the ALSA build of that SPU plugin. Not sure if it helps here though (only i686 builds as far as I know) but it may help others who come across this thread with the same issue.

You could also try pcsx-df (in the main repo) or psx (in AUR). PCSX-df is similiar to ePSXe with the plugin based system, and supports nice 3D rendering with antialias and such. pSX is trying to be more true to the real thing and it looks (as bad) as the PlayStation does/did.

After changing my PSX BIOS and messing with the video settings, I can now run games from ISOs. However, I can't get any sound whatsoever. Sound works perfectly in PCSX (which is less stable than ePSXe for me, so I'd rather not use it), but I can't get anything in ePSXe. My sound plugin is the epsxe-plugin-spu-alsa-1.9-1 package from the link in my first post. The plugin tests out perfectly. Despite that, I get the following error when I open an ISO or start the BIOS:

To be honest I have no idea, I run a custom kernel with ALSA OSS emulation and I've never touched anything except alsamixer to get both ALSA/OSS working. I'm going to assume the Arch stock kernel also has ALSA OSS emulation enabled so perhaps you need to load some extra module?

Well, when I don't have anything else running, mplayer works fine with OSS output, but ePSXe still has no sound. It gives me the same error. I also have alsa-oss installed, but that doesn't seem to be helping.

I don't think I can help more, as far as I know ePSXe was only released as a 32-bit compiled version and I'm running 64-bit. Try to get in contact with the person running that repo, he/she might be able to figure out the problem.

Hi guys, I've read various posts relating to this but I still can't suss it out. I just wanna run games in 4:3 format. I've changed the options so many times I've lost count! It's either still stretched, a big border all way around the screen or the picture is off up in the top right.

I know I have encountered your problem before but I can't remember what exactly caused it, I wonder if maybe you got some sort of scaling set in your Windows Display settings since you are on a 4K display and that may be causing the issue. Not sure at all, just throwing something out there for now.

I'm running Windows 10, first of all. My fix was to right click on "epsxe.exe," click "Properties," select the "Compatibility" tab, click "Change High DPI Settings," and finally check the box next to "Override High DPI Scaling Behavior" with "Application" selected in the dropdown menu.

Thanks for the info! This is a bit off topic, I apologize in advance. But, will Duckstation allow for an up-res in visuals like epsxe? Also, is there a good thread for the best Retroarch PS1 core troubleshooting? Thanks again!

For some reason, Retroarch just crashes when I try to load Beetle (HW/SW) and then a .cue or .bin. Both my game rips and bios dumps are confirmed working in other emus, and I've placed bios files in the Retroarch "system" folder & pointed the directory setting there. Running v1.3.6. Puzzling, for sure.

Why would not change your negative thinking and just reply that's an older version of Retroarch .We or I recommend updating to the latest's version . If that does not solve your problem reach back to me and ill be glad to solve your issue..

Many hardcore retro gamers try to play most of their games on the original gaming hardware for the most authentic and enjoyable experience. However, the original Playstation is one of the consoles that most definitely prefer playing via an emulator. One of primary reasons I use ePSXe to emulate PS1 games is the amazing graphical options it provides via plugins.

There are also some other add-ons known as shaders that can give some very interesting graphical effects. We like the Natural Vision shader, because it strengthens colors, anti-aliases the image, and adds a nice blur that hides numerous PS1 visual flaws which high resolutions will not heal alone. Note that the Shader Level controls the blur amount for the given resolution. If the level is too high and the resolution is too low, the picture will be blurred too much. This shader arguably provides an overall pleasing look for every game out there. The set of filters and related information can be found at this phenominal thread at NGEmu.

What do you think the best settings for my Video Plugin would be? Most of them that I have tried have actually made the emulation experience worse. Like certainly blotchy areas on the FFVII worldmap. And it takes a bit long to enter a battle when battles occur(or at least it seems that way).

I am trying to play legend of dragoon and I keep getting the error no wgl extensions. I have downloaded petes 3d3 drivers and i still cant get it to work. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Post or email me. Thanks

hey robbyn, thats kinda cool ive had that same usb converter for years now(little white box)and yeah it is pretty freakin sweet for all kinds of emulators.its pretty cheap too(got it at wally world, under 20 bucks)! i also would like to know if anyone couldtell me the best plug in and configuration for someone with no graphics card?
