Hi, all, I plan to be in Singapore for RedDot.

Given the new location (relative to last year), do you have any suggestions for comfortable-but-affordable lodging?

Is it better to stay downtown? Is there public transport to the conference, or should I count on taxing a taxi?

Are you having any meetups shortly before or after the conference? (This would affect my travel dates, as I'd try to attend.)

I'll be in Thailand before the conference, and the Philippines after, so if anyone's there and wants to meet up, let me know.

Thanks, and I've been looking forward to this since last year's conference! Awesome that Obie Fernandez will be speaking. I was looking for a Pickaxe or K & R type reference book for Rails, and found his "The Rails 3 Way" book, which is excellent.

How's HackerspaceSG doing? I'd like to visit there again.

Regards,
Keith

Sadly I'm not sure about hotels local to NUS, which means it probably is a cab to the venue (a pain I know, apologies for that). I'd love for a recommendation.

Glad to hear you're keen on the speakers, I have one more I'm trying to line up!

No problem, taxis are cheap and plentiful in Singapore, if I remember correctly.  I helped organize a conference once and I know that finding the best venue can be one of the most difficult and time consuming parts of it; and that sometimes tradeoffs need to be made; but this tradeoff is minor IMO.  I appreciate all your work in putting this conference together.

In case I'm staying near an MRT and take a train to Buona Vista or Dover stations, are there normally taxis there I could get the rest of the way to the school?

I saw some excellent deals on AirBNB.com.  I've used them a couple of times in the US and was happy with the value I got.  Anyone have any experience with, or information about, AirBNB in Singapore?

There are a 1-2 small inns behind NUS.  (There is a Fragrance hotel as well)

rates ~100-120/night.

I'd be worried I'd miss out on the social activities if i stayed out there.

So often the best bits of a conference are the events afterwards.

The venue is accessible by public transport (take 96 from Clementi bus
interchange) and NUS' internal shutter buses. There's Fragrance Hotel
behind NUS that you can walk into NUS and take a shutter bus to the
venue, but hotel is kinda like a love motel.

Oh hey! You might want to try this out: http://www.nus.edu.sg/ohs/properties/visitorslodge/index.php

Which is 2 minutes away from Hackerspace.SG … if not for Nabins, HSG wouldn't be where it is today. True story.
