The Sindhi Language Authority (Sindhila), has recently brought out second
volume of “Encyclopaedia Sindhiana” in the market which is part of its
efforts finally to bring out first ever comprehensive encyclopaedia of
Sindhi language.
The second volume consists of 2,571 entries; based on six letters of Sindhi
alphabet in addition
to 323 entries included as addenda of the first volume based. This volume
consists of 728 pages with four-colour good printing on art paper. The
price of the second volume is Rs 1,000 per copy. Earlier, first volume
having about 3,500 entries based on first three letters of Sindhi alphabet
was printed. First volume consists
650 pages with price of Rs 750 per copy.
Nevertheless, 80% entries in Encyclopaedia Sindhiana are related to Sindh,
such as: personalities, places, flora, fauna, archaeological sites, other
life forms, tribes, castes, beliefs, rituals and rites, culture,
civilisation, language, dialects, literature, fine arts etc and 20 percent
entries are about
the rest. However, the third volume is expected to be published in near
future. Out of total 52 letters of Sindhi Alphabet, three letters were
covered in first volume, six in second and two
letters in third volume to come (total 11 letters covered so far).
Let us hope with continuous, hectic and untiring efforts of the Authority,
this gigantic task would accomplish with the passage of time. However, we
must appreciate the commendable efforts of
the Authority in general without hesitation. No doubt, there is always room
for improvement and
same is in this case also. Once the full volumes of the
Encyclopaedia are printed, it would not be difficult to update them from
time to time despite addenda of previous volume is given. Above all, the
two volumes brought out so far can be termed as good efforts towards noble
cause. No
doubt, the Encyclopaedia Sindhiana would widely be used for reference and
education purposes.
At the same time, let us hope the Govt. of Sindh would continue to support
this project till its completion.
