Me, a Beggar Also Have a Dream

By

Dr. Ahmed H. Makhdoom

سانئِيَمِ! سَدائِين ڪَرِين، مَٿي سِنڌُ سُڪارَ دوسَت! مِٺا دِلدارَ، عالَمُ سَڀِ آبادِ ڪَرِين شاھ

“Oh Lord! May Thee Bless my Sindh with bounties in abundance,

Oh My Friend, my Beloved! Glorify Universe all with Thine exuberance.”

..............................translated by Ahmed Makhdoom

 مانواري نياٹين سنھڻين مٺڙي؍

مانوارا مٺژا سھٹان ساٸين

خوش ھجو شال سسداٸين

سائين لک قرب ۽ مهربانيون

Martin Luther King had a dream - he dreamt that: "One day people will be known by the content of their character and not by the colour of their skin.” His dream was fulfilled when a man of different colour, but with tremendous treasure of character and education in his possession, was sworn in as the President of the most powerful nation in the world. Thank you Martin Luther King! Long Live Humanity! Will my dream ever come true? I wonder! I wonder!

Saaeen, I too have a dream! I have a dream that one day a little girl, Phaapula – daughter of Adluu Kunbhar - in Sohrab Ggothu will have juttee for her feet and potee on her head and will never go out on streets of Town Meharr – with bare feet, with no potee on her head, with dirty unkempt hair, unwashed face, torn suthanna kameesa, neglected, abandoned, pverty of the hungry, thirsty, sickly destitute parents  – begging from the drivers of the cars, lorries and buses who stop for a cup of tea and taste Meharr jo maao.

I have a dream that Niyaannee Phaapula raannee will have books in her bag, bag on her shoulders,  glitter in her eyes, brilliance of learning in her heart and a vision of achievement in her soul – walking merrily with her sartyuun, saaheirryuun to school to learn the glorious History of glorious Sindh and the Economics and Sciences of that glamorous Civilisation of Moenjodaro, along with the modern Arts, Sciences, Mathematics.

I have a dream that Phaapula Kunbhar, and Sohni Mahesar, and Marvi Mangi, and Sassui Lohaar, and Sorath Koree, and Siyannee Keerio, and Saroj Oad - all will one day learn the Vedas and Qur’an, the Geeta and the Bible, the Hadith and Guru Garanth. These daughters of Sindh, will read the gifted poetry of the gifted poets of Sindh and the evergreen, universal, immaculate message of the greatest Sage, Saint, Suufee that ever lived, murshid Saaeen Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.

I have a dream that a little boy, Sodho,  son of Laungu Gopang of Bhittai Ggothu, will not have to work for his keep and living and supporting his ddutrryaala, puttheeya ughaarraa parents -  in the fields, factories, or wadderei jee otaqa or jageerdars, paathaareedars, zameendaars, kamdaars, subeidars bungalows, or slog out at some peer’s laandhee and haaveilee. I have a dream that Sodho Gopang, and Ambu Siyal, and Truuhu Maachee, and Hotuu Kolhi, and Raamuu Menghwarru - all will attend the choicest Colleges and Universities to earn Degrees and Doctorates in Arts, Sciences, Architecture, Archaeology, Medicine, Zoology, Botany, Engineering, Management Sciences, Information Technology and other modern disciplines without any hindrance, without any pain and privileges, without any strikes and dharnnaas and then go forth and serve their land and people.

I have a dream that these youngsters- the filial, noble, worthy, illustrious sons and daughters of that great Mother, the Mother of all Mothers, the Cradle of Civilisation, Sindh, will make their motherland, their fatherland feel proud of them with their achievements, innovations, research, aptitude and conduct.

I have a dream that, one day, the sweet Sindhi language will be the language of learning, management, business, economy, commerce, literature, scholarship, research and development and will be the only National Language of the glorious, free, independent, Sovereign  Republic of Sindh. I have a dream that only Sindhi language will be the language of conversation at home and in Public, schools, colleges and offices, administration and establishment. In early childhood learning whether at home or school, in Nursery and Kindergarten classes children will ONLY be taught Sindhi and in Sindhi.

I have a dream that along with main, major language Sindhi, English will be part of the curriculum from Standard One right up to the University level, because it is English which is the International Language of Learning, Research, Progress, Development, Commerce and Business. Sindhis will have to become A1 in English. Then as a third language give them a choice from a set of languages like – Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Hindi, German, Spanish, Bengali, Gujrati. I have knowingly, not inadvertently, in complete senses and having properly done my homework, had not mentioned Urdu. This language should not be part of any curriculum, especially at the Early Childhood level. Why? Firstly, I do not see any worth or utility of this language. In my view and opinion Urdu is not the language of culture, or learning – its just a glamorous facade; a fake, frivolous and flippant waste of time, energy and effort. If a youngster has to go abroad for Higher Studies, he or she must be A1 in English, and of-course his mother tongue, Sindhi. Strictly, seriously speaking Urrdee has no place in Sindhi society and elsewhere in the world.

I have a dream that every Sindhi – in Hind and all over the world – will one day come back to the warm affectionate bosom of their Mother, Mother Sindh, and live in Love and Spirituality, Peace and Harmony, Tranquillity and Tolerance, Progress and Prosperity, Healthy and Wealthy, forever and forever, till deat do us apart!

I have dream that every Sindhi will, one day – I dream for that day, I pray for that day, I beg for that day, I crave for that day, I long for that day, I aspire for that day – breathe the fresh and fragrant air of freedom and liberty. No chains, no fetters, no shackles, no urrdee and will proudly scream: “Free at last! Yes, I am free at last! Thank God, I am free at last!”

I have a dream! Yes, I have a dream that one day Sindhis will be known by their Humility rather than their Haughtiness! They will be revered by their Insaaniyat, celebrated by their Sindhyat,  inspired by their Wahdaaniyat and  admired by their Mohabbat.

I have a dream that one day a Sindhi will be known by his Sindhyata, Insaaniyata, Wahdaaniyata, Mohabata. I have dream, which was also a dream and a prayer and message of my guru, my murshid, my teacher Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, imploring, pleading, appealing to His Beloved:

تُون سُپڙُ آئون سيڪڙو ،

  سَڳُ تون صاحب آئون

پُڇِي تنهنجو پَڳُ ڪُلهي پاتم ڪِينَرو

“Tuun saparru aauun seikrro, tuun Sahabu aauun saggu,

Puchhee tuhnjo paggu, kulhei paatumi keenaro.”

“Thou art the Magnanimous Supreme, me just a craving beggar;

Thou art the Kindest Master, me only a make believe pretender;

Seeketh Thine horizons clear, me an eternally travelling seafarer!”
