Thought I forgot about saving the world huh?

Last time we talked Simpson required groups to serve 130+ people which
was over my/our heads. Since then I've been volunteering at Our
Saviors Housing which is near Simpson about 1 mile west. They have
this really cool facility with full (but smaller) kitchen. It has been
in high demand for food groups but I snarfed us some slots.

Friday September 17
Monday November 22
Monday December 13

The groups are a bit larger at 40-50 but with a full kitchen gives us
more options to serve food.

SOOO Just giving the heads up that there are still homeless people out
there believe it or not and our quest to save humanity is alive and
well. Perhaps in the meantime we should do a road trip and go clean up
beaches in the Gulf :-)

See ya all in fall!

Hey There!

Hey we are back from our summer roadtrip and starting to crank up the fall activities.
In 2 weeks we are serving at Our Saviors Housing (NEW LOCATION west of Simpson about 1/2 mile).

Since we have more people to serve it would be cool to have 5-6 people help out so we
could use 2-3 more people. We'll have 2 people bring main courses and 2 bring side dishes.
Remember we can cook at the facility too, full kitchen.

Lemme know if you are able to help out OK?

Thanks and great seeing you all back!

I’m not available on September 17th, but could maybe swing November 22.  Is the schedule about the same at Our Saviors?

I will not be able to join you on the 17th. November 22nd is looking good, however.

I think the biggest adventure was driving 10,000 miles! Especially thru South Dakota and Nebraska NOTHING!

That would be great, thanks! I think we are good for November then.

Could use 1 more for Sept 17th and 2 more for Dec 13th.

Swing and Hit!

Well this was our first try at our new facility and I think it was a
hit. Gaby said a lady came up to her and told her they never get food
like this, usually sloppy joes and spaghetti type meals. We hit them
with:

Kathleen: This really good sweet ham
Arah: She spent all day cooking this fine rice pilaf that nicely
complemented the ham
Christian: Gaby was forcing people to try this great Thai curry and
rice and they loved it
Gaby: Her potato vegetable dish disappeared
Jeff: Mountains of fresh fruit they rarely get
William: Kept people occupied playing "Sink My Battleship"

Cooking for 50 people in 1 hour was a bit of "hell's kitchen". We all
were in panic mode because the kitchen was pretty small and we had a
lot of custom cooking to do. But you should see this stove, it really
rocks - huge. And they do have a lot of utensils, but cutting boards
were in short supply. In the end we guessed we served about 40 plates?
Although the lady said she had 46 registered?? + 6 of us +2 staff
people. So I'm glad we brought enough food.

Poor Jeff tried to keep up with the 20 year olds the night before
doing cross-training with 150 pushups and was in screaming pain, so he
could barely lift a knife. He tried but then we gave him the night
off. Hope you are better today!

Anyways here are the pictures of the new facility

It was actually a fun crowd. The ladies at Simpson were more of a
subdued crowd and harder to talk to, probably because of their
history. We had a mixed crowed and almost everyone was willing to
talk, so it was easier mixing with them. I will get more information
about why they were there and how long they stay, etc.

We are good for November with 7 people, but feel free to join us if
you want. We could use more hands for Dec 13, we are currently at 4
and need 6. I am getting more dates for 2011.

Thanks again all you bleeding hearts. This will become more important
to the people as we get closer to frigid December -March!!!

Take care,
dreez

Hi Mike:

I'll pass on the Nov 7 dinner unless you decide you need more. However, I can do the Dec 13 one. I can do a main course again if you need that.

Thanks again for orgnizing this.

FYI, I've been getting emails from the staff life this...

I second Crystal’s praise—I hear your dinner was awesome! We always really appreciate volunteers who are friendly and take the time to enjoy our residents’ company, so thank you for that. I’ve got you scheduled for dinner next on November 22. Because that’s a weekday, you’ll be able to come in as early as you’d like that evening to get started on the meal. J
