Putting out the call for Jan 21st, lemme know if you are available.
Hey its my Bday I'm going to bring cake!!!
For my birthday I only ask that you come to our discussion afterwards
and tell me how you would truly help homeless people (I'm thinking
feed them is cruel). I've heard it all so far in email rants, but I
want to hear your voices!
1) Just feed 'em and move on don't think about it
2) Quit trying to solve the world's problems, rich white guys ain't
got a clue
3) Make them dependent on free food
4) Get them more involved in their own care, then need to be able
to direct their own destiny
5) Others bigger than you tried and failed
6) They don't need food as much as hot shower, safety, and
somewhere to store their stuff
I'm meeting with the director of the Shelter Jan 12th, and will bounce
these off her. I will ask if she can come on Jan 21st too so you could
ask her questions yourselfs.
We'll have "The Discussion" at Nyes Pollaniyse bar (or Keegan's if
Nyes is too crazy).
Come one Come all! Happy Bday to ME!

Andrea sent me this (in case someone has a stereotype of 'all' homeless people).
I'll ask the director what percentage are trying to better themselves and what percentage are riding the system.

First - Happy New Year to all.
I am not sure if I am in town that day. I will know soon. If I'm here, I would love to contribute food/whatever or just meet for discussion.
Re the discussion.....here is another opinion which I realize is really a question.
Why do you think there is a "best" way to help ANYBODY do ANYTHING? I think there are as many answers to your question as there are people. Some solutions might feel more productive or "better" to you - some might work better for some people relative to others. I can't figure out if you want to listen to what lots of people are thinking to help you decide what might be the best avenue for you, or whether you think if enough people you like have this discussion there will be some consensus. I lean towards the idea that there will be some common ground but not a magical consensus - there is so much to be done, so many people who need different kinds of help and so many people who can help in different ways.

Yo Again,
Hope you had a great weekend.
Well I rallied about 9 people and since I didn't hear much from anyone
on what people wanted to bring
I picked and assigned food items. Obviously if there is a problem,
please let me know.
Sandy Pow Pow Powers (climber friend) wanted to join us so please
welcome her also as we dive
into "Hell's Kitchen" of frantic cooking and preparing...
So I had an interesting discussion with Crystal the director on our
topics, and just laughed and
said she said she has to deal with all the "enabling" questions often.
Even happened to her and
her family when they came to serve meals.
Crystal said there are two things we can do to be the best volunteers
that most people don't
do. Most people hide behind the tables or in the kitchen scared of the
"homeless" people. Watch
Jeff's 5 year old Liam go out and play cards with people and engage
them. Perfect example
for us all. She loves our group because we:
1) Smile and laugh and engage people when we serve meals. Serve with
love.
2) Go out and eat and talk and engage people
We tear down the 'them" and 'us'. She said this is HUGE and loves us
for it and we should
keep it up. Despite the tough fronts people put up, this is their
defense shield from getting
hurt. These people rarely get smiles or people concerned about how
their day went.
I've got more, but we can discuss afterwards. Hope you can all make
it, its my birthday
after all!

OK,
I know its cold out there but can you imagine what some of these people are going through today? Wow. Best we can do is have big smiles waiting for them.
Gaby and I watched "Pursuit of Happyness" with Will Smith last night. Great touchy feely flick on this homeless guy and son that had everything against him and became a zillion-aire using his wits and attitude. Here is the link on his background and story.
I think we have a about 9-15 people tonight for "The Discussion" so it should be animated. Hopefully Nyes is not too busy at 8:15'ish. I'll have my cell phone 612-859-3681. JOHN HEMANN/CRAIG JOHNSON: If you get there early grab a table.
