Veera Kesari is a 1963 Indian Kannada-language swashbuckler film directed by B. Vittalacharya and produced by Sundarlal Nahatha and Doondi. The film stars Rajkumar, T. N. Balakrishna, Udaykumar and R. Nagendra Rao. The film has musical score by Ghantasala.[1][2] S. Siddalingaiah was the assistant director of this movie.[3] B. Vittalacharya shot the movie simultaneously in Telugu as Bandipotu, with N. T. Rama Rao.
Critics have called it a "clever adaptation of the adventures of Robin Hood" [4] with the core theme of the romantic portion inspired by William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew.[5] The film had its climax scene in Eastmancolor.[6] The film was a major box office success. Midway through the movie, Vittalacharya, who suffered from typhoid, asked his friend, M. R. Vittal to complete the shoot. Vittal completed a major portion of the shoot including the song Mellusire Savigaana, but refused to be credited as the director.[7]
The film begins in the forest area of Aanegudde, an elephant reserve. A state minister arrives at the place of a local don, Rana. Rana forces the minister to sign a deal to open a resort at Anegudde. The minister signs reluctantly after seeing his bodyguard being murdered by Rana.
The local don Rana hatches a plan to route out the local tribal folk from their homes and build a resort there. When he comes there with his henchmen, Krishna and Amoolya revolt and help the folk. Krishna fights the henchmen and creates fear in the mind of Rana. Rana takes his right-hand man Selva to kill Krishna, and at this juncture, the elephant Kalinga comes to his rescue. The head of the tribal folk sees Krishna reducing the anger of Kalinga and deduces that he is definitely the incarnation of Baahubali (Yash), a fierce warrior in the army of the King of Karunadu. The tribal chief then narrates the story about the valour of Baahubali. The king of Karunadu is about to be attacked by a king Verma. At this juncture, Baahubali defeats one of the strongest warriors of Verma. Saddened at this, Verma resorts to a cunning way and makes Baahubali's close friend poison Baahubali. When he is poisoned, Verma attacks him with his army along with the traitor minister of Karunadu. In spite of his dying state, Baahubali single-handedly defeats the entire army of Verma and kills them. In this fight, Baahubali loses his pet elephant, "Balarama" (this is the elephant which has incarnated as Kalinga), who kills some of the enemy soldiers and dies. Finally, Baahubali dies, and the king of Karunadu awards the title of "Gajakesari" to Baahubali for his meritorious act of bravery and his service to the Motherland.
The music for the film and soundtracks were composed by V. Harikrishna, with lyrics for the soundtrack penned by Yogaraj Bhat, A. P. Arjun, K. Kalyan and Pawan Wadeyar.[6] The album has six soundtracks.[7]
The film is directed by MG Srinivas and produced by Sandesh Productions. It is a heist film, with most of the narrative unfolding in a prison. Ghost stars Shivarajkumar in lead role. Malayalam actor Jayaram, Bollywood actor Anupam Kher as well as Archana Jois, Sathyaprakash and director MG Srinivas have acted along with Shivarajkumar in the film. Ghost's songs have been composed by Arjun Janya.
Udayji was one of the Great Artists of Kannada Film Industry. He was a great scholar. He has left richest culture behind him. We had shared the screen space in many films. Each character played by Udayji was a Milestone and Watching his Performance is like reading a text book for the learners of acting.
"Kumaratrio" were my very close friends. Uday's pronunciation and Kannada Language was Excellent. He was an Icon. We have enacted in many films. I was a fan of him watching him performance in Films like "Vijayanagarada Veeraputra", "Amarashilpi Jakanachari". He was my Hero in 2 Tamil Films "Yaanai Pagan" and "Sengotai Singam". He should be remembered forever for his achievements, by us. Government should honour him suitably.
In the year 1959-60 I met Udaykumar. I used to address him as Anna. It was my luck he liked me very much. I requested Udayanna to take me to madras and provide me a job. He introduced me to Mr G. V. Iyer. I started working as Assistant Director in the film called "Thayi Kalaru". Anna was the hero. Udayanna has changed my Name from "Swamy" to "Ravi".
Bhagavanth Kesari, or atleast one-half of him in the film, is easily one of the most humble roles of Balakrishna in recent times. The world he is from, where he calls himself adavi bidda a lot, is not exactly novel (think Pawan Kalyan in Bheemla Nayak and NTR Jr in RRR), but it achieves its own grooves and meaning in the presence of a new star. There was a certain apprehension I felt about Telangana being used as a mere backdrop, and though Bhagavanth Kesari does not hold a candle to the kind of Telangana-centric films we have seen from filmmakers native to the region, it also feels validating to know that Telangana is now a part of a film with the most mainstream star at its helm. Anil Ravipudi commits to the new milieu, and the casting of Telangana actors like Jeevan and Muralidhar Goud, who have so far featured in smaller films, was a heartening sight.
Nandamuri Balakrishna's latest cinematic venture, 'Bhagavanth Kesari,' set the stage for a spectacular global debut, premiering alongside Vijay's 'Lion' on a Thursday. The movie industry behemoth 'Lion' might be casting a sizable shadow over the box office, but 'Bhagavanth Kesari' is carving its own niche, enjoying an overwhelmingly positive reception from audiences. Notably, the film's opening day was nothing short of impressive, pulling in a staggering 16.6 crores in domestic collections. However, the real test lay in its performance on the third day of release.
On the following day, the film's earnings experienced a slight dip, marking a decline of approximately 57.83%. Despite this dip, the film managed to pull in a respectable 7 crores, solidifying its presence in the box office race.
In the realm of 'Bhagavanth Kesari,' the spotlight falls squarely on Nandamuri Balakrishna, who graces the screen as the leading protagonist. The film also features a stellar ensemble cast, including Shri Leela, Kajal Aggarwal, and Arjun Rampal, all of whom add their unique charms to the narrative. Directed by the visionary Anil Ravipudi, the film bears the imprint of producers Sahu Garapati and Harish Peddi under the banner of Shine Screens. The soul-stirring soundtrack and background score are the creative masterpieces of Thaman S, further enhancing the cinematic experience. It's also noteworthy that the esteemed Bollywood actor, Arjun Rampal, takes on the role of the formidable antagonist, Rahul Sanghvi, in this cinematic marvel
Points to note: Ajay Devgn has his film Runway 34 hitting theatres on April 29, 2022. He also campaigned for BJP during the 2015 Bihar elections, so it is kind of expected of Devgn to make such remarks being a BJP poster boy. So, by uncharacteristically tweeting the love for his language out of the blue, Devgn is only serving his own purpose; evident by how quickly he stepped back from the debate, saying "something was lost in translation".
