getting simpleSAMLphp working with MAMP Pro

I'm trying to get simpleSAMLphp installed and working locally with MAMP Pro. I put the simplesamlphp directory in htdocs, with a symlink from "simplesaml" in one of the server directories (call it "A") in htdocs to the simplesamlphp/www directory. When that didn't work, I also added simpesamlphp/www as a server. Regardless, when I go to [hostname-in-A]/simplesaml, the browser just hangs.

Obviously, this is not my area of expertise. Any suggestions?

I don't follow, but you shouldn't put the simplesamlphp distribution
into a directory that's accessible to the web server, putting
something in "htdocs" is probably wrong to begin with.

The documentation covers all of this, even for the case of installing
into "alternative locations" (section 13).
