As of June 3rd, 2011, SimpleGeo Places has ~ 20 million features in
United States, Canada, United Kingdon, and Australia.

We're working on adding more countries soon.

We are currently trying to build a location aware application.

On the user interface of this application we have 3 drop down boxes - one each for "country", "city" and "locality".

When the user selects a country in the “country” drop down, we need to populate the "city" drop down with all the cities of the selected country.

When the user selects the city, we need to populate the "locality" drop down with all the localities that are within the city.

We would appreciate it if you could tell us whether the API supports this need for all the 3 countries that our application will be launched in – India, UK, and USA?

SimpleGeo Places offers coverage of POI data in the US and UK, but not India. Additionally, we offer coverage in Canada, Mexico, and most of Western Europe. The demo will let you play around with places in the US and UK here:

Any plans on adding countries in Central/South America that are popular destinations for US tourists, such as Costa Rica, the islands (St. Lucia, Bahamas), Belize?

Thanks.

Max,

With our new Factual partnership, we'll be attacking these countries first, starting with the US: http://www.factual.com/topic/local.  Brazil, Chile, and more are in there (not some of the smaller countries you mentioned though).

We'd definitely love to have data for those countries, and as soon as SimpleGeo and Factual can gather that data, geocode it, and serve it, we'll be happy to.

Just testing out Places 1.2 with the new data from Factual

For the UK, I'm getting very little data returned now. Whereas before
I would get 100's of places for any type of search, now I only ever
get 1 or 2 records? Is this complete, or is more data still being
rolled out as I type?

I'm concerned that I've just signed up with the new pricing plan, only
to have the usefulness of my app handy-capped for my home country when
I upgrade users to Places 1.2?

Regards,

Alex

Alarm over - sorry I didn't realize the radius parameter has changed
from kilometers to meters in 1.2 (doh!)

Maybe you could emphasize the small changes like this (that are
actually quite large!) in the docs. Took me a while to spot it. Also,
your Places demo on the website seems to be set to a very small radius
still also, which lead me to believe that was all the data there was.

Alex

I've been looking at some of the places data near me, and have found
that there seem to be some missing places. The places I am looking at
are typically large venues that would hold concerts, sports events,
etc. Any reason why this data seems to be missing? For example, I've
looked at the Wharton Center, Spartan Stadium, Michigan Stadium,
Cooley Law School Stadium, etc. (East Lansing, Ann Arbor area in
Michigan).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

We are currently researching different ways to associate user locations to shops in which  the user could be right now. For this, we'd like to use the features provided by SimpleGeo. As we will have to evaluate our final results, we have some questions on your data.
  1. Can you determine how "good" your data is? How big is the coverage, any hints how much data could be missing?
  2. Is the data cross-checked with data from other sources? How reliable is the data? How much data is stale?
  3. Can you give us information from where you obtained the data? Public sources, did you buy different sources or did you gather it yourself?

With Places 1.2, we partnered with Factual to use their dataset through our API. This covers over 30m places in 45 countries. To best answer your others questions, here is the Factual FAQ which will help you better understand their data.

Best,

Emile
