Hello,
My name is Subho Banerjee. I am in the fourth year of pursuing a B.Tech. degree at The LNM Institute of Information Technology. I am really interested in applying for some of the projects listed on your "Ideas Page" as a part of GSoC 2012. I am really interested in computer vision after having done a undergrad course in it, and have been developing apps which typical stereo vision or a Kinect for depth perception. I have some exposure to the OpenCV framework for computer vision and also the openNI/NITE drivers and framework for handling a Kinect. I am not very adept at Python(I have a basic idea of how python works as well as a basic idea of the OpenCV wrapper for python), however, I believe that it will not take me long to hone these skills. Generally I do most of my coding in C++ in which I can claim to have in-depth knowledge of the language.

I was looking through your Ideas page, and I could not find any IRC chat room or a mailing list where the project ideas could be discussed. I was particularly interested in the following projects on the Ideas page--
  • Image stiching
  • Tracking
  • Adding extensions to SimpleCV
Could you please explain how we are to go about making the application for GSoC, as in, what are we expected to do before applying at the GSoC portal? In most of the other projects we are required to either make pull requests or interact with the mentors for a better understanding of the problems which are to be solved of the summer. Could you please explain this because it is not there the page?

Also, to be very honest, I havent used SimpleCV almost at all. Though I did know of the projects existence when about 6 months ago, a post was made on reddit.com about the release of v1.1. I had found the minimalist approach to the API very interesting, and I would love to contribute to making it better.

Cheers,
Subho
