Kinect version 1473 and SimpleOpenNI on a mac

Hi there,

I had troubles getting SimpleOpenNI to work with a bunch of new Kinects (model 1473) teaching a lab class last monday. Imagine the disappointment. SimpleOpenNI is a must, and a nice one too - I don't want to force a full dev environment on the poor bachelor students.

Now, i've managed to figure out how to add the newest version of libfreenect which solves the problem and adds compatibility for model 1473.

I guess others have had similar frustrations with using the 1473 in Processing, and I've put up the changed version as a zip here:

For devs (late night note, on top of my head for lack of better):

I just used homebrew to install the latest libfreenect: brew install libfreenect

Then i checked out the read-only version of the SimpleOpenNI source from svn

I copied libusb-1.0.0.dylib and libfreenect-0.1.2.dylib from the brew versions in /usr/local/lib into the dist hierarchy of SimpleOpenNI/library/osx/OpenNI2/

I then install_name_tool -changed the copied libfreenect dylib to refer the local version of libusb

And ran the utility to make the distribution zip file.

Thanks, it's only 64 bit, do you have any way of testing it with a 1473 and an older model yourself first? 

Don't want to break it for others .. :)

Else I will test it tomorrow with the diverse body of my students' laptops :)

I downloaded you version and tried but the problem still there. It doesn't work for me.

I'm on Maverick/64bit, with Kinect 1473. 

I just downloaded you ZIP, and put the zip contents into my processing libraries folder. Should I need to do something more? 

I also tried by changing the files with newer, but still the same. I'm becoming crazy! Can't make this run with OpenKinect neither OpenNI, I just wanna play with my Kinect :(

Hi Mariano,

Do the examples show up in the file menu?

Try again from scratch, you can rename your existing Processing folder in Documents, redownload the zip, and unzipping it into a virgin Documents/Processing/Libraries.

It is intended to run with Processing 2.0 - it’s a while since i tried. Which version of Processing are you running?

When start to try again, after few months, I downloaded the latest Processing version (2.1.1) and downloaded your version.

It's running the same problem, never changed their behavior.

Nice work! It's the only functional Kinect 1473 OS X binary that I have found on the whole net.

Sadly I had some stability issues with your version. I've compiled a new one based on libfreenect 0.4 that works like a charm for me on OS X 10.8.6 / 10.9.1 with Kinect Model 1473.
