Looking forward to this:

Probably won't be anything new on it, but its good to have everything in one place.

One of my favorite albums from them.

It’ll be fine, as long as its not some lazy re-hash, featuring a few cd’s and a re-published book.

I hope this has some kind of live element. A bluray is probably too much of an ask but I'll be happy with a decent recording of a full show.

This is great news. Hope we get 5.1 DTS Mixes as previous box sets.

Can’t wait

5.1 DTS would be amazing!

Agree a live show would be welcome too.

Surprised that this release has been mentioned so casually by JK on FB. Kinda against trend!

Anyway, happy days.

Merry Xmas everyone and happy new year too.

Ooh!

I'm super excited for this.

Incredible.

Do you know when it'll be released? Just gutted Wall Of Love is missing but I guess if it's from the Verona show the barrier collapsed during it from memory.

No 5.1 mixes then. Was hoping for this or could this be added in final box set release. Not much new. Slightly dissapointed.

A few cut and pastes on what I've posted on Hoffman...

And to finally have the "Sign 'O The Times" radio edit on CD! Worth £40 for that alone... Joking aside, 9 of the 15 tracks on disk 2 will be newly mastered from Themes 4, so that's good.

Verona is missing 4 tracks due to filling two discs and not using a third. Wall Of Love, OUAT, Jungleland, Big Sleep missing maybe due to flubs or JK forgetting the words...

The VHS was heavily edited down to 90 minutes with huge cuts to half the tracks, so at least the ones we're going to get are hopefully unfutzed with, like the Sparkle gig.

Even the recent needless 40 Hits had a new track though.

The other tracks from the SFY sessions were unfinished (supposedly), but surely they could have been "tidied up" to be included here? Simon has detailed them exhaustively on DG. Apart from the S&F demos on Silver Box and the alternative NGD, I don't think they've ever put out demos. Even the famous Sparkle ones that have been on YT for years never showed up. The band just aren't keen obviously. Would be nice to have some nuggets that will entice us. We're mostly in our 40's and 50's now and these boxes will have limited appeal for the mass market.  Especially, if it's just a bare bones affair like this one. If this bombs then S&F Deluxe will never appear...

The two disc is only 12 euros, so you're effectively paying 25 quid for an incomplete concert. (plus a nice poster and book - packaging is actually great as always)

Usual negativity aside about what isn't on it, I'll still buy it, obviously! Got to feed the machine before the well runs dry...

If this is finalised, the I'm very disappointed.

Street fighting years was one era where the band recorded every outdoor show on the tour, so yet again, a missed opportunity to release to rare, live unreleased footage. Universal were - and still are - spoilt for choice. Three songs still remain unreleased, and this box set was the perfect opportunity to make hay while the sun shines, and put closure on what was a brilliant time for the band with a flourish. Not that the boat has sailed, the chance of another opportunity has gone for good.

Also, the fact that no demos are included is another concern. Very disappointed - and frustrated!

Clive

Well this is massively underwhelming isn’t it?
No 5.1 mix and not even a full concert.
Thought we’d get cleaned up versions of the TFGC intro and outro versions and a couple of demos at least.

Who is it even aimed at?

What a whiny bunch we are.

Never satisfied with what we have always wanting more.

Amazon UK have jumped the gun before official announcement like they did with 40 Hits, and are now taking pre-orders.

4 Disc Box = £43.04
Vinyl = £22.44
2 Disc CD Edition = £13.99
1 Disc CD Edition = £6.88

March 6th release date.

There is also something in that section to be released on July 24th for £151.25???!!!!! Probably a mistake and a load of nonsense, but who knows!

Hang on.

Allow me to be whiny.

So to get the live CD's we have to pay £44? When the double which I assume doesn't include them is £14?

Fuck that.

It’s like the days of being ripped off for bootlegs no chance will I be coughing up for this. I’ve already bought SFY about 6 times over in one variation or another and probably like everyone else here got all the b-sides.  To think I’ve waited patiently for 30 years to hear People Stand Up Again etc, I couldn’t feel more underwhelmed.

Hi All

I know it does seem a bit much. But even after all my moans i suppose i we will all buy just for the presentation itself as we will all have everything on these discs. The only thing i will like to here though is the Gaelic Melody which i loved at the show away back. But i would still have loved to here it through 5.1 or Blu ray like the previous box sets. Pity but if thats it, thats it i suppose. The £151.25 which is supposedly released on 24th July i cannot find on Amazon. But if they release a vamped up super super deluxe version and expect us to buy again after this release that would be a p**s take.

Hi Mark,

Try this link...

The vinyl is on the right. The "other" thing is on the left. The only thing that could justify a price tag like that is a middle years Vinyl box set from OUAT to OSATS. I wouldn't expect any confirmation or denial from anyone obviously at this stage.
It's more than 6 months away but conveniently a fortnight before the UK 40 hits tour...

So now it's official. What a waste of a great opportunity for a Deluxe Boxset. Aside from the artwork and box it's about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
Won't be pre-ordering and bound to tank in sales.

I met someone this week close to the band who said Record Companies are killing artistry in more crueller ways than they did in the past. This is a fine example.

It will sell, purely because there are mugs out there who will buy this. This so-called ’super deluge’s also the same price (give or take) as a gig ticket.

I know which I’d rather have thank you :-)

A huge disappointment, with the live CDs being anything close to being "essential", & not even the full gig at that.

If this is the record company making a point that no further retrospective releases like this will occur, then job done.

At this stage, the best thing they can do is re-evaluate once they see the largely negative feedback in various places. I'm guessing there's a chance of somewhere between nought & zero of that happening.

This gets a hard pass from me as well. Disappointed there’s not even a single demo or outtake on it. Remember the leaked demos on YT a couple of years ago? People Stand Up Again sounded so good. Man, there’s a plethora of unreleased material from this period to choose from, and that’s not even going into all the live stuff that’s been recorded.
And where’s the videos?
And where’s the 5.1 mix?
Big time missed opportunity.

Hi Folks

Had a wee moan and whine 😂 to Simple Minds website and i got a reply from them (see below). Also i sent Universal the same email. So i will not be very popular with them and band. But i suppose our feedback does matter especially the ones on udiscovermusic.com and this site. Don’t  think anything will be done but it may make them think and put the boot in to Universals approach. If you don't here from me again well i may have been banished lol. We wait and see. Nice talking to you all. 😂

Cheers guys

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your email.

We have passed your important email to our supervisors.

Jim, Charlie and the band very much appreciate your feedback!

Ha!

The usual banal response! They’re marketing this as having ‘previously unreleased live footage’. I just wonder how that claim stands up legally, as most of it was on Verona and Seen The Lights. CD2 is an even bigger farce; A cover version replicated three times,  the rest of the b sides featured on ’40’ and themes 4.

And were expected to pay £43? I don’t think so.

Looking around the Simple Minds Facebook pages, there's pretty much universally an air of disappointment at what could have been. There's no way that Universal are going to adapt the offering in time for a release in 7 weeks. This is what happens when the business stops listening to fans like Simon C. They are making a killing from PRS and PPL revenues and yet don't reinvest it in new music or fans of existing bands. UMG just seem go for a fast buck. In saying that the SM Shop got 43 of mine this week.

My only gripe apart from the cost is, why not the entire live show?

If it needs to be over three discs that's fine.

Pompeii is a great box set. £50 from memory but worth every penny. Not just Concert Audio and Bluray but extra concerts, 5 documentaries, posters, booklets, postcards, you name it. No marbles though unlike some of the PF immersion sets!

Normally when I get disgruntled I ping off emails direct to Steve Hammonds and Sam Router at Universal. Polite but firm in tone usually.

Sometimes it has prompted investigation and faults rectified through SC, and sometimes it hasn't. Won't bother this time though. The message is loud and clear and pretty much universal (pardon the pun).

Even when the sycophants on "Official" are tearing it to pieces it'll get back, if it hasn't already. Surprised JK hasn't got his red pen out and gone on a blocking spree like he usually does.

Simon is probably as (if not more) pissed off as all of us about this. This has been in the can at least 18 months, so there has been plenty of time to review the content.

Not even the Mandela Day promo released to radio prior to '88 gig. Come on... Hardly a demo. It was "finished product" albeit less layered that was fine for radio 30 years ago but not now apparently.

The Prent surround could have been tweaked and re-eq'd to how 5.1 is now done 15 years later. Lazy...

I am a mug though as I've said I'll buy it purely to ensure future product is released. I always thought a S&F box set was a dead cert, mainly as JK has been quoted several times as saying it's his favourite Minds record and he prefers it to NGD.

Now I think that when this tanks, that's the lot for expanded album sets. It won't close the door on everything I hope. Always hope for a refreshed hi res Seen The Lights or other archived filmed concerts somewhere down the line...

John

It’s frustrating, but I suspect it’s a case of Simon’s voice against the masses at Universal. I know if I had been him, I would have probably stuck two fingers up and them and said "OK, Have your way then”. You’ve wasted my time"

Buy it because you want it, not just to line Universal’s coffers. The more unsold units that sit gathering dust, the more it will hit them where it hurts - in their wallet.

Hi All,

My twopence worth.

A dvd with the promos and a 5 1 mix is a must as far as  I'm concerned.

However, I'm sad SFY is my favourite album, I'm annoyed and don't want to buy it as as a protest HOWEVER its sfy..... .

So to recap...

Missed opportunity

Sad sacks will still buy ( me )

It's difficult as the band seem to have no appetite to release demos etc

Also after comments re the 40th cd edition is the sfy deluxe really a band release?

Where did you find these contacts at UMG ?

Maybe we can compaign to get a 5th cd containing some of the famous SFY demos and the 4 missing Verona tracks. It doesn't hurt to ask.
The additional cd could be slipped in the boxes without having to remanufacture them and advertised through a sticker on the cover (for instance,
it has been done some years ago with the initial pressing of the New Order « retro » box set).

It could include the following :

CD#5 SFY « Live & rare » from the Virgin archive

1) People stand up again (vocal) - Monitor Mix #2 (6:11)
2) Sometimes when it rains (instrumental) - Monitor Mix #1 (6:25)
3) Dusseldorf beat (instrumental) - Monitor Mix #1 (6:47)
4) Power in the darkness (vocal )- Monitor Mix #3 (5:42)
5) Belfast Child 12" version (vocal) - (6:55)
6) This is your land (vocal) - Rough #3 (4:53)
7) Room (instrumental reworking) - Monitor Mix #1 (7:05)
8) Street Fighting Years (instrumental) - Monitor Mix #3 (6:31)

9) Wall of Love (live in Verona) 6’36
10) Once upon a time (live in Verona) 5’53
11) Oh Jungleland (live in Verona) 5’44
12) Big sleep (live in Verona) 7’05

Total cd length 75’47
I propose to do something before this ship sinks. We fans (also consumers) can make our voices heard and try to put this right.

Why not a campaign aimed at Universal to release a 5th cd containing some of the famous SFY demos and the 4 missing Verona tracks.

The additional cd could be slipped in the boxes without UMG having to remanufacture them. Just a sticker on the cover is needed to indicate
it's included in the set (for instance, it has been done some years ago with the initial pressing of the New Order « retro » box set).

Here is what this « bonus » cd could include (all this material exist in the vaults and is well documented on the Dream Giver site) :

You’re wasting your time I’m afraid.

Firstly, the flak this box set has received speaks volumes. I haven’t  heard one person say a good word about it - and rightly so.
Seondly, Us starting a campaign against universal  will be like them cracking a walnut with a sledgehammer. They’ll just laugh at us.

Like I said in a previous mail, the best way to petition in an way is vote with our feet and not buy the thing.

Pretty much agree with that, Clive.

I got involved with these guys at UMG after contacting Cressida at Customer Services over the DVD replacement programme for the Sparkle set, and Simon passed my feedback to a chap called Neil Wilkes who authored the DVD.

I also tried to get them to acknowledge and rectify the poor quality of the ATTSS tracks on the OUAT set and failed.

They are good guys and have always been courteous whenever I've dealt with them. I have no idea who has the final say on these things and no doubt it differs with each project.

Simon wouldn't thank me for publishing their email addresses online and I'm not going to.

Also, some on Hoffman have got the impression from Paul Sinclair (SDE) that it isn't actually Universal who have dropped the bollock on this one, and that blame may lie closer to the band. I'll just leave that there.

As usual with these things, No one want to take the blame. Like most fans, I now no longer care. All I know is I wont be buying it. Band, record company and anyone else involved argue all they like.

Simon has taken the SFY demo pages down from Dream Giver.

WTF?

JK & UMG showing us how thick skinned they are. Unbelievably petty and childish.

They have been on there over a decade FFS and are a matter of public record.

Don't dare do another box in the future for S&F or SM will wipe all trace of any demos from the internet.

Don't normally lose my shit like this and if I've jumped to the wrong conclusion, then I apologise.

I just thought this was the UK and not North Korea and am struggling to see what this will achieve.

I guess it's far to tricky to ask Simon why?

Have the demos ever been released before in any format?

If not maybe there's a good reason they aren't being released now?

Could it be that Mick doesn't want them released? Could it be that they sound shit?

I'm thinking out loud here. For me I'm far more pissed about the gig not being complete. I don't really care about demoa personally. I understand why people do though.

Far too tricky, Robin!

He'll be bound by an NDA no doubt, which is why he is very patient and accommodating with us fans continuously begging him for clues, but can never elucidate until after any press release.

I'm actually really sorry for any potential embarrassment caused by blowing this open, but this sort of stuff, if it is what I think it is, really boils my piss.

It's not the demos of the released SFY tracks but unused ones like People Stand Up Again (all hell broke loose when that one appeared on YT years ago, from memory), Dusseldorf Beat, Power In The Darkness, Sacred Eyes etc. (Perhaps this sentence will vanish...)

Paul Sinclair reckons these are already pressed up and ready to go, so far too late for any additions probably, unless as has been mooted here an "insert" is done. Won't happen now though...

Often that is the issue. The Early Years was recalled after being on release a week in 1998, as no one could remember who wrote what. John Milarky, Tony Donald etc all contributed I think and it vanished.

It may apply here, but I suspect something else is afoot.

Going Orwellian isn't the answer here though.

They refer to the existence of the songs in their own SFY book for god's sake.

Just seen Clive's post on SMF.

Fair enough, I've jumped the gun.

Hardly ever lose my rag, and the first time I do in years on this group, I get it wrong.

Simon can do as he pleases with his own site.

My huge apologies to Simon.

It’s not you who’s done anything wrong. It’s whoever is responsible for getting this box set to final approval stage and ultimately, ready for release.

These discussions would never have taken place in such a critical manner had they actually  realised who their target market really is.

Initial thoughts on CD1. It's credited to Simon Heyworth and not Andy Walter at Abbey Road this time, which indicates a 2002 clone. There is some precedent for this as the LITCOL discs bundled in the OUAT box were the '02s and not remastered.

Many of the discs in Rejuvenation were tweaked in terms of EQ on Graffiti Soul and some albums were level shifted slightly louder and some quieter. I suspect something similar happened here.

With the exception of When Spirits Rise, all tracks are noticeably quieter than than the 2002 (in terms of RMS db, quick iTunes "Get Info" volume comparison)

The bass is enhanced and the top end is rolled off. This resulted in an epic fail on the NGD 2016 remaster IMHO, but initial thoughts are that it has paid dividends this time round.

That was an actual remaster of a remaster though, whereas I believe this to be level shifted and EQ'd slightly. I'm undecided if this has resulted in a lack of clarity though. I always thought the 2002 was perfect but it now sounds shrill in some of the louder parts of Belfast Child, Take A Step Back and Wall Of Love by comparison to the new one.

It certainly isn't bricked though, that's for sure - quite the opposite. I think I have to say I prefer it, but only one listen in. Normally I make my mind up quickly on these things, especially having 30+ years worth of listening in the memory bank.

Too early to call yet though... Disc 2 now...

As I posted on Hoffman

Yep, I think I was wrong. I stupidly thought that if they credited Simon C as Project Consultant, then crediting Simon H for the mastering just above it would be correct.

Now we know they can't even spell "Hurricane", I was wrong to summise a level shifted tweak.

Both discs ARE remastered in my view; by whom and where is currently a mystery, though I suspect Walter at AR.

The red sticker on the front does after all state All 4 Discs Remastered. I chose to disbelieve that and believe the booklet.

Anyway, it's better than the '02, having heard heard it through again, and that's all that matters!

"Released Summer 2019" proves that the release was held back, as it was originally meant to tie in with the 30th - It's been in the can 18 months - obviously didn't fit the schedule, live albums, pointless GH's etc....
