I'm going to say something now.

Just because I can.

I've smoked weed now and again. At the moment I'm at the beginning of the self isolating thing. So I got some weed.

And I've never listened to the new live album stoned. So you know. I am. The 89 intro through Street Fighting Years then a bootleg version of Wall Of Love I have from Dortmund followed by This Is Your Land then Soul Crying Out is all I'll ever need from Simple Minds.

I know some people don't like this period...fuck knows why...for me this is Simple Minds as good as they have ever been. The band are on fire. I mean it's sort of poignant that this is the last tour with Mick. Listening back now yes I am stoned and I fucking like it but this music, specially those five songs live in that order. It's the peak of so many things for me. This live album is such a gift. If you don't have Wall Of Love I'll see if I can email my MP3. It has to be as it was. It was that for a reason. Wall Of Love is the pre Waterfont moment. I remember this song elevated the show to a whole other stratosphere.

Listen to it like this. Please.

Theme / Spirits Rise (Verona)
Street Fighting Years (Verona)
Mandela Day (Verona)
Wall Of Love) (Dortmund bootleg - I'll send it to the group - I hope it works?)
This Is Your Land (Verona)
Soul Crying Out (Verona)

H o l y   S h i t.

Robin.

oh, painful to read, hopefully you wont suffer with a stoneover, SFY is utter garbage but each to their own. If it works for you, then fine. I just don't get what you get, so maybe that's why the Minds in their ever changing evolution, capture so many different people - sound fair ?

I find it hard to read. How can anybody call themselves a true Simple Minds fan and hate Street Fighting Years.
I would like to see a list of everyone's top 5 albums, just out off curiosity.

No such thing as a true simple minds fan, I realised years and years ago, we are all different, some were early to the table, some late, all have their views and favourite songs and albums. Its probably 10 years since I last had dialogue with Robin, we do not know each other, but I have supported him in the past when he contemplated leaving the webring due to some unsavory comments by some - I have always enjoyed reading Robins posts.

What I did say was " If it works for you, then fine. I just don't get what you get, so maybe that's why the Minds in their ever changing evolution, capture so many different people - sound fair? "

I think the opening track SFY is epic and absolutely stunning as a piece of work, the rest is turgid in my own personal view. I personally cannot listen to the album, but will vigorously defend it within circles, but as a SM fan, on a SM webring for almost 20 years, and having been a fan for now close to 40 years, I think most would respect my opinion.

.... and thats it, just an opinion. Music is subjective. One thing I would say, is that someone posted BC live in Copenhagan, and while I really have no time for the song, Kerrs vocals on this are absolutely first class.

Peace, Love, Respect. Take care of Family, especially at these challenging times.

Pete

Wow.

Top five.

This is tough for me.

But I'm going to be honest.

1) Neon Lights

...

...

...

Of course I'm joking. Though Simple Minds recording of The Needle &, The Damage Done is up there for me. Charlie is absolutely on fire on that recording.

This is really really difficult.

1) Street Fighting Years

The band at their creative peak. A moment never to be recaptured. The end of the road for Mick. The culmination of the first ten years.

As for the rest I just honestly don't know where to go. I'll have to think about it.

But number one is absolutely definitely Street Fighting Years. Ok?

What is this again a top five or a top ten?

Interesting...

1. New Gold Dream
2. Sparkle in the Rain
3. Sons & Fascination/ Sister Feelings Call
4. Black & White
5. Street Fightings Years

Listening to Sparkle right now in 5.1 DTS Surround, “See Moon” just haunting. Whack it on folks. Such a Brilliant Album. New Gold Dream still favourite. Such a shame Universal could not do in Surround. But will live as is. I just float away listening to Gaelic melody.

I love top ten lists. especially if its about my favorite band Simple Minds =D. This is a hard task 18 albums releases and all great. Simple Minds are one of those bands that put out great albums as opposed to bands that put out 3 or 4 great tracks the rest filler. but here it goes:

1. New Gold Dream - The synth work in this is amazing. ive gotten a lot of instrumentals and extended versions of these songs through various box sets, But i would love it if Simple Minds released a new Box set including instrumentals of all the tracks. I would love to hear an instrumental version of new gold dream the track. as well as big sleep. this is simply an amazing album. I would also love to hear the demos. I heard the demos from street fighting years and they sounded amazing.i can only imagine what these sound like.

2 Sparkle in the Rain - This would include tracks from this period. including Brass band in African chimes. one of my favorite all time favorite simple minds tracks. the extended versions by steve lillywhite are far superior to the album cuts of catwalk, speed your love, waterfront. The instrumental version of "White Hot Day" is sublime. this would also include the demos. i really wish the minds would release the demos of their albums. especially during this period.

3. Cry - This is another great minds album. i cant get over spaceface and disconnected. kinda funny but i was playing around with disconnected and in audacity and i cut out the left part of the track, (or was it the right? lol) and it actually sounded harder and better. sleeping girl, New Sunshine Morning, Face in the Sun are fav tracks on this very rich album.

4. Walk between worlds - God i love this new album. The beat on these tracks is awesome. Utopia is my fav off this album. when of simple minds all time great tracks. favorite tracks are Summer, The Signal and the Noise, Angel Underneath My Skin, Sense of Discovery. Its incredible that at this stage of their career they are still putting out albums of this quality.

5 Street Fighting Years - I couldn't believe this album when i first hear it. Big departure from what they had done before. I kinda see this album and real life, and good news as their more rock less synth period and it was great. The track street fighting years is an all time fav. This Is Your Land, Let It All Come Down, Belfast Child among my favorites on this album. but dont forget Saturday Girl and Year of the dragon. perhaps the greatest simple minds B-sides ever made (except for brass band lol). Saturday Girl i just cant get over. one of best tracks ever. I dont drop the word beautiful that often but this is a beautiful album and one of simple minds best.

Ok I have to finish my list.

I've fucking loved reading this stuff by the way.

Before my list does anybody have any SFY boots? I have Dortmund. Original source was a taper I believe. I have a decent sound system. The band absolutely killed on that night. Little moments of spontaneously absolute magic and gold. So much better than Verona. That set. In order. Concise. Fucking perfect. You can't remove Wall Of Love for whatever reason because that's the pre Waterfront Waterfront. Then it settles down somewhat. The early part of the show is ruined. Because its incomplete.

So my question is. Does anyone have any SFY shows they'd care to share with me? All I have is Dortmund. Complete. You get a real sense of the show as you hear the PA rather than a mixed live recording.

I realise if there are any others out there they'll most likely be crappy quality old audience recordings but I do not care. I need more of the tour. Please help me.

Happy to share Dortmund back I'll get it into my Dropbox then I can just share the link here.

In Wall Of Love you can literally hear Mel building a street of houses with his drumkit. I mean I'm amazed he doesn't drill right though the stage. He fucking owns it. Mick's organ. Jim's voice. Take that song out of any SFY show and you kind of ruin it. Not to mention OUAT, OJ and BS. The band are crazy on this tour. Immensely underrated because we've only ever had bits of Verona. But honestly. This version of Once Upon A Time is part David Bowie and part Van Morrison. It has so much soul.

So yes. I quite like it.

Dortmund.

Please please please tell me you have some kind of SFY boot. Or seven. Do they exist?

This tour was the absolute musical, creative and sumational peak. Never as good as this since. Not possible.

Fucking great though.

But 1989 was as good as it got in terms of auditioning for the best band in the world job.

Oh my list.

It's wierd.

Or weird.

1 - Street Fighting Years

2 - Good News From The Next World

3 - Graffiti Soul

4 - B&W

5 - Walk Between Worlds
