Perhaps this is something that capital district communities could do?

Oakland inventories 800 acres of public land for urban ag

"Cultivating the Commons: An Assessment of the Potential for Urban Agriculture on Oakland's Public Land" — The revised edition features a more refined slope analysis of the identified sites in Oakland, California, updated conclusions and recommendations, and a preliminary assessment of Oakland's privately owned vacant land. Overall, more than 800 acres of public land with slopes under 30% were identified, a potential contribution of up to 5% of Oakland's vegetable needs if only half of this land were used. The study also identified an additional 3,008 privately owned vacant lots totaling more than 800 acres, a potential contribution of another 10% of the city's produce requirements. a process to shift our society from industrial to sustainable culture and help communities prepare and adapt to the revolutionary change from oil dependency to local resilience.

Seeds for Changing Times

is the focus of this Transition Troy gathering.

Changing times is more than extreme weather;

Changing times also includes probable economic instability/volatility, and continued Extreme Energy Extraction methods (deep water drilling for oil in the Arctic and elsewhere, fracking, nuclear, etc.).

Transition Townsfolk can stand in the gap between the possible and the impossible,

embodying living prototypes, tipping the balance for our business as usual peers from fear of a future they cannot envision to a palpable positive excitement and energy for a resilient future. Perhaps you know the drill: be the change you want to see!

So, Seeds for Changing Times:

a group sharing on topics such as these:

varieties that do well in a wide range of different weather conditions

good sources of seeds

seed saving know how

anything that would be wise to grow more of (grains, nuts, etc.)

seed/plant swaps

permaculture and growing of food and herbs

4 season growing (high tunnels, greenhouses, root cellaring, overwintering some crops, etc.)
