I want to develop an application that works on all three versions of Windows XP, Vista and 7. The application allows people to select files to open and allows them to save the files after some operations. Each of the three versions of Windows has a different style of File open dialog boxes. While XP uses GetOpenFileName with OPENFILENAME structure, it is suggested that we use a "Common File Dialog" with Vista and Windows 7. I can get the file dialog in the suggested style to work for each different version of the OS. However, I would like to make sure that my application opens different styles of dialog box on each version. I do not want to build separate binary for different versions of Windows.

If you are running Windows 10, Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, first run the inbox Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool prior to running the System File Checker. (If you are running Windows 7 or Windows Vista, skip to Step 3.)

Important: When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions. However, if your Windows Update client is already broken, use a running Windows installation as the repair source, or use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files. To do this, run the following command instead:

Note: Replace the C:\RepairSource\Windows placeholder with the location of your repair source. For more information about using the DISM tool to repair Windows, reference Repair a Windows Image.

The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files, and replace corrupted files with a cached copy that is located in a compressed folder at %WinDir%\System32\dllcache.
The %WinDir% placeholder represents the Windows operating system folder. For example, C:\Windows.

Note Do not close this Command Prompt window until the verification is 100% complete. The scan results will be shown after this process is finished.

To repair the corrupted files manually, view details of the System File Checker process to find the corrupted file, and then manually replace the corrupted file with a known good copy of the file.

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search. Type Command Prompt in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

To view the details that included in the CBS.Log file, you can copy the information to the Sfcdetails.txt file by using the Findstr command, and then view the details in the Sfcdetails.txt. To do this, follow these steps:

Note The Sfcdetails.txt file contains details from every time that the System File Checker tool has been run on the computer. The file includes information about files that were not repaired by the System File Checker tool. Verify the date and time entries to determine the problem files that were found the last time that you ran the System File Checker tool.

After you determine which system file was corrupted and could not be repaired through the detail information in the Sfcdetails.txt file, find where the corrupted file located, and then manually replace the corrupted file with a known good copy of the file. To do this, follow these steps:

Note You may be able to get a known good copy of the system file from another computer that is running the same version of Windows with your computer. You may perform a System File Checker process on that computer to make sure the system file that you intend to copy is a good copy.

Copy Source_File DestinationNote The Source_File placeholder represents the path and file name of the known good copy of the file on your computer, and the Destination placeholder represents the path and file name of the corrupted file. For example, type copy E:\temp\jscript.dll C:\windows\system32\jscript.dll.

So. Is it possible to make the PDX file auto run with my cd data? How can I get people to open the pdx file for the archive without making them update to Acrobat 9 Pro Extended and without making them go into the cd files to open the pdx manually.

Hi
im new on here and new to online recording software. i downloaded audacity to my PC running Windows vista but the program wont open. very frustrating.
I seen a post on here saying you need to download Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015.
i went on there but it has this and i dont know which i should download.
File Name
vc_redist.x64.exe File Size 13.9 MB

I followed the instructions.
downloaded audacity and it said completed.
then i downloaded Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 and chose the vc_redist.x86.exe File for Win Vista and that also stated completed.
i then rebooted my pc but im still getting those same error messages above.

forgot to ask,
does this program have vocal effects such as reverb and delay etc as the drop down list
does not allow you to click on them ?
Also how many individual tracks can you record on this program. such as if i have a backing track to sing along to, could i record 20 more tracks along side that backing track ?

I'm pretty sure that you cannot install updates that are in the .cab form. Those are meant for slipstreaming updates onto the install disk. Try getting the updates from the windows update catalog here.

I read through your posts and I can only find ones regarding using a .cab update to integrate the update and not to install it. Do you have a link to a specific post with how to install a .cab on an already running version of windows?

You didn't read carefully. It states "The Package Manager command-line options give the following for the /s switch which can be used online or offline (I'm assuming online means while you are using Vista and offline means a mounted image or while in XP).

In the post right after mine by prathapml, he states he installed hold 'em poker using cab file! That shows it can be done. The syntax in that post. You don't need any other reference, but you'll need package manager.

I want to run my microsoft updates from the command line and this looks like the solution. I am not sure what to do with these. do i need to make 2 batch files or just use the bottom one. I can access an elevated command line etc. also am i right that i copy all the updates in to one folder.

I use WL a lot just for my personal use and I need to get it working bad.
I had original purchased WL 3.0 and then purchased the 4.0 upgrade at the time. And it has worked flawless for many years. For my only personal use I did not need to spend hundreds on a new current version of WL, 4.0 works just fine as it is. And WL is official copies and not a cracked version, I paid lot of $ back then.

I recall this problem. Looking through my archive I found the following (I also have copies of the files concerned) which is clearly the same issue, though the versions are not the same - at least it may point to a solution for the OP:

Like many others, I was frustrated when I found out that
Wavelab 5 did not run on Vista. Even more frustrated when
Steinberg said that they would not fix the problem for version 5.
Instead, one had to buy the new version 6. Yeah right!

Did your WL4.0 fix work because mine did not on win 7. I see it said that it is a fix for WL5. I tried it as it said it may work but, it did not. I know this is the forum for WL8 but I posted my original post in older WL forum and no one helps. So I decided to re post it in WL8 forum to maybe get some help.

Some companies do it differently. But the bottom line is that to have got more extended support you would have had to pay more, and the way to do that in this case is to buy the current version (which although not discounted for v4 owners will still cost less than all the upgrades from v4 to v8 would have done).

As for Microsoft and the end of support for XP - it has been the longest-supported operating system in computing history. This makes it feel even sadder I agree, but there really is no case for them to continue nor for us to complain. XP still works; there are plenty of ways still to mitigate the risk of continuing to use it - but to be safe, you do need to have some understanding of the nature of those risks and the effectiveness of different ways of dealing with them.

Wow. You clearly have no idea what the world of software entails or even how to read system requirements. Install Windows XP and WL4 will rock as usual. But do not complain about a version of software that was current 10 years ago to work in a modern OS.

I discovered that our WL5 experienced the same issues, when I try to use any of the file/open options, the program disappearing. I tried the same dll fix (since I have 5.01b, it does not work. You can drag and drop adls or montages to an open WL5, but you cannot save.

On the Windows XP boxes, none of the files in the WebDav folder can be opened by double-clicking and there is no Open right-click option. The users can copy the files out to a local folder or browse from within an application.
