I've played both three and four so I'm decently good at the 3d fallout games, so I'm not asking about difficulty problems (I also understand that nv doesn't scale enimes like 3 or, to some extent, 4 does). Will wild wasteland hamper my enjoyment of the story as a first time player?

The Good
the best aspects of this game is that is scripted like a book. Wonderful storyline, funny hidden jokes, a great, fundamentally sound idea as a basis, also It had a depth of character unlike any i have seen. In the food world the rpg games today are like a cheap cola, but it was a fine wine. It was very well thought out, but also it was very well felt out.

The Bad
The knock on this game is the knock on any game of it generation, the graphics. It was born in an era when the graphics were poor by todays standards. Today the standard game graphics has is something like a high resolution "quake" type 3d graphics, wastelands was closer to a 8 bit first generation nintendo type graphics.

The Bottom Line
wasteland is like a book. it doesn't have the same sensational splash as the new ones that just came out. But, what it had in writting, depth of character, & empathy, will surely make it a classic for years to come.

Above ground, players may find generous amounts of Cinder Blocks and Scrap Metal Blocks, making the Wasteland perfect for obtaining Scrap Iron. However, the Wasteland surface is riddled with Land mines all consisting of variations of Tin Land Mine and the occasional cooking pot trap as well.
The wasteland is full of destroyed structures which still have containers such as Coolers and Lockers. The ground is very hilly and contains lots of junk. The wasteland is very foggy, especially during the morning and at night. In terms of loot, the Wasteland is the richest of them all, thanks to its large bonus to Lootstage.

It is recommended to avoid this biome at night on higher difficulties unless thoroughly prepared. At night enemies spawn endlessly, and killing them tends to attract the attention of Screamers. This can lead to a cascading increase of zombies spawning until players are overwhelmed. Due to the increase to the already-large amount of special infected, zombie animals, and higher density of zombies, the Wasteland is considered end-game territory, and players are wise to avoid lingering in the wasteland unnecessarily. It appears to have a rather large Heat multiplier, so much so that firing an SMG continuously for around three seconds will attract a large horde of zombies.

My squad of hardened wasteland warriors charges into battle alongside a goat, a swearing parrot, a cyborg chicken, and a cat who wears a little military hat. They may sound goofy, but by the end of the game that cat was one of my most consistent damage dealers.

The dynamics of soil moisture stored in a wasteland and in a forest land in the sub-humid climate region of the Loess Plateau was measured with neutron moisture meter for three successive years. Within the depth of 0-320 cm, the increment of soil water in the test 3 years was respectively -165.7 mm, -15.2 mm and -115.2 mm at the upper and lower position on north slopes and the lower position on south slope of the wasteland. Soil water increased by 17.2 mm at the upper position on north slope of the Chinese pine forest land, after > 380 mm water was consumed yearly by tree transpiration. It is suggested that forest land is essentially different from wasteland in soil water income/expense. The necessity of conducting the approaches for gaining available water of forest land was put forward.
